Klein + Hummel Monitors are the Real Deal for "Deal Or No Deal"
Touring Video Inc, a remote multi-camera video production company based in Southern California, has installed Klein + Hummel O 300 D three-way, self-powered nearfield monitor loudspeakers in the company's TV-3 HD/SDI remote truck. Their unique flagship modern styled production truck is currently being used on a number of prime time network productions, including two NBC game shows "Deal or No Deal" and "1 vs. 100."
Touring Video president Doug Armstrong has been very pleased with the performance of the stereo pair of K+H O 300 D speakers since they were installed in the audio room of the TV-3 truck just a few months ago. "We especially like their wide frequency range and smoothness to the ears. We also think that mechanically they're a very soundly built speaker cabinet with all the proper mounting hardware options needed for mobile applications," he says.
The K+H O 300D reference monitors offer a number of features that make them suitable for applications from spacious mix rooms to mobile production audio rooms, where space may be more restricted. Flexible room-matching circuitry allows the monitor's amplitude response in three critically relevant frequency ranges according to placement. The high-frequency horn's vertical dispersion minimizes early reflections off the mixing console surface and broadens the sweet spot to afford the engineer more freedom of movement.
Armstrong adds: "Because of the quality and pleasantness of their sound, we are intending to replace all of the loudspeakers in our TV-3 truck with various K+H reference monitors, including both the O 200 and O 100 models. Furthermore”, he says, "When we mix in 5.1 the truck will use the O 100s with a K+H subwoofer, the O 800, to complete the surround sound package."
Armstrong reports that the K+H O 300 D monitor speakers were first introduced to Touring Video following the recommendation of one of the broadcast industry's top audio engineers, Klaus Landsberg. "His endorsements on these speakers pushed us in the direction to look at them seriously."
Another well-known engineer working in TV-3, Michael Abbott, got us the first demo and introduced Armstrong to Thom Salisbury, the local K+H rep. Touring Video chose RSPE as their retailer for that company's experience in professional television applications, as well as being centrally located to the Burbank area, according to Armstrong.
"This has been a great experience working with a rep and retailer that knows the product so well and are very passionate about this new speaker line. Trying a new brand of reference monitors was a challenging project, knowing that speakers are always an engineer's personal choice. Operating mobile trucks, we see a new mixer every day. Since the install every audio engineer has been very pleased with the K+H O 300Ds."
