Tomcat Does All Its Own Stunts

Tomcat Does All Its Own Stunts

Although Super Bowl XLI is a distant memory, we recently learned that Tomcat USA had a part in one of the few decent commercials that Sunday afternoon.

Max Wilson in Tomcat’s Nashville office watched the game with friends and when the Toyota Tundra commercial aired the group all agreed that it had to be a computer-enhanced edit. Surely the claims that the stunt driver would drive straight towards the edge of a cliff (at 70 miles per hour, just barely clearing a shutting door, no less) trusting that the brakes would stop the vehicle in time.

Well, it turns out that stunt was actually filmed live and it was pulled off thanks in part to Tomcat truss! Max got confirmation of this from Randy Beckman of BRS Rigging out of Los Angeles, California. Randy’s rigging company is one of the premier production companies in LA. He’s worked on a wide variety of projects including The Dukes of Hazard and all three Spiderman movies.

According to a blog at ‘Kicking Tires’ - Cindy Knight, marketing and communications PR manager for Toyota, confirmed that everything in the commercial was real. The stuntmen spent a great deal of time, measuring and practicing before attempting the stunt. Toyota had been assured that it could be done without incident.

Although it’s hard to tell from the commercial - that’s a 30’ cantilever over the edge of the cliff and it’s all supported by Tomcat Extra Heavy Duty and Medium Duty truss. All of the filming took place in the mountains around Indio, California.
