By Demand: New Renkus-Heinz IC Live-RF for Installations

Hot on the heels of the new IC Live Digitally Beam Steerable Array, launched at Infocomm and PLASA08, AES 2008 sees Renkus-Heinz launch the installation-specific counterpart, the high-powered IC Live-RF.

IC Live, unveiled at Infocomm and PLASA08 this summer, applies the company's innovative ICONYX Digitally Steerable Array technology to live event production. This new installation-specific version is intended to bring its unique combination of digital beam steering, full range musicality, high power handling and matching subwoofer system to fixed installations - another world first from the California based manufacturer.

"Even the original installation Iconyx was used for live productions of all kinds," says Renkus-Heinz president Harro Heinz. "IC Live was developed to meet those specific needs, but many installers also want that level of full-range power handling, hence the development of the new IC Live-RF."

IC Live-RF will sit alongside this summer's other new addition, ICONYX-R, in the Iconyx product lineup. ICONYX-R offers an updated, slimmer, enhanced performance version of the original Iconyx, designed for both speech and music in fully active; RHAON networkable IC8R, IC16R and IC24R formats.

All Renkus-Heinz self-powered products offer the option of RHAON (Renkus-Heinz Audio Operations Network) technology. RHAON provides comprehensive connect / control / supervise networking over standard Ethernet, delivering audio signals via CobraNet, AES/EBU digital or analog inputs. System operators can use a networked computer for real-time system control and room tuning with functions such as 12 parametric EQ filters, dynamics processing and up to 340 milliseconds of delay.

The IC Live-RF module incorporates five neodymium 6.5-inch cone woofers and three neodymium compression drivers on a purpose-designed waveguide. A multi-channel DSP/amplifier controls each transducer individually. Complex signal processing shapes the array's output and steers it in the desired direction. Steering the sound and not the box, the enclosure remains vertical, keeping sightlines open with a tall, narrow profile.

The arrays produce narrow vertical beams of 30°, 25° and 20° that can be steered up or down by up to 30° at .01° resolution. Horizontal dispersion is a wide 150°. Onboard memory stores up to seven combinations of beamwidths and aiming angles for instant recall via rear panel pushbuttons. For higher SPL and an extra octave of beam steering in the lower midrange, two IC Live-RF modules can be vertically arrayed "horn to horn."

The matching ICL215S is a dual 15-inch bandpass subwoofer that supplies the extra bass impact needed for high level music. A single ICL215S can be used as the base for one IC Live-RF; a pair provides sturdy and safe support for a two-module array.

IC Live-RF offers consultants and integrators a powerful new tool in creating architecturally and aesthetically audio solutions, without being forced into the kinds of compromises on sound quality or quantity that "hidden" loudspeaker solutions typically involve.

The new array will also make a perfect partner for large format video advertising and information displays such as LED billboards, allowing sound to be directed into a defined audience area with sufficient power for indoor or outdoor applications (a weatherised version will also be available to order).

"IC Live-RF combines many powerful attributes in one compact, installation friendly cabinet," says Renkus-Heinz Sr. Vice President Ralph Heinz. "We have designed it to again raise the bar on what can be achieved with high quality audio in a fixed installation, even where previously an optimum blending of cabinet, architecture and a customer's expectations would have been impossible to achieve."
