Arup Adds Two New Staff to Performing Arts Sector

Jim Niesel (pictured) has joined Arup’s Performing Arts Sector in New York as senior theatre consultant. He will take responsibility for designing and coordinating the integration of lighting, video, audio, rigging and seating for all types of facilities.
Previously a consultant with Theatre Projects Consultants in Connecticut, where he specialised in performance rigging and machinery, Jim has designed or assisted on over 40 projects in the US as well as six international venues. His experience prior to that includes the design and integration of AV systems for both new and renovation projects for Sound Image in Escondido, California. As a rigging specialist, Jim worked at the Arup-engineered, award winning Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in California. He has also spent many years working in various capacities at a range of venues, experience which now serves as a basis for his consulting work.
Jim says: “I wanted to join Arup in order to broaden my horizons and build more projects in more places, while making the best use of my skills and experience. With Arup’s 92 offices in 37 countries, I can be sure that I’ll be working with some very knowledgeable people.”
David Taylor, leader, Performing Arts Sector Americas at Arup says: “I’m delighted that Jim has agreed to join us in a leadership role. He is brilliant at what he does, which is taking control of projects from the beginning and making the right decision every time.”
Niesel is an active member of the Rigging Working Group, which is part of the Technical Standards Programme of ESTA, the Entertainment Services and Technology Association. Last fall he completed a 2,500 mile charity motorcycle ride as one of the Long Reach Long Riders (LRLR), a fund raising group for the ESTA Foundation’s Behind the Scenes programme.
Also new to Arup in New York is Rich Fisher, as Graduate Theatre/ Lighting Consultant. Rich will combine his experience in both theatrical consultancy and lighting consultancy to assist the performing arts sector. He says: “I’m really looking forward to the new challenge at Arup and, having worked with David before at Theatre Projects, have already established an excellent working relationship.”
