Arup to Work on Brooklyn Arts Tower

Arup to Work on Brooklyn Arts Tower

The new centre is part of a commercial development designed by Behnisch Architects and Studio MDA, providing street-level retail space with a high-rise residential tower. The plinth houses the performance, studio spaces, administration and technical support program for the cultural component of the development.

Arup is leading the programming and planning process for the fit-out of the new centre with architect Snøhetta. A main flexible performance space with facilities for dance and movement, and an inventory of large studios for rehearsal, workshops and production creation is being planned by all the stakeholders of the organisation, including the client, the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership.

Katie Dixon, capital projects coordinator for the BAM Cultural District at the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership says: “We’re delighted Arup is working with us on the Ashland Center. We have already begun a programming phase with the arts organisations that will potentially tenant the building and Arup has been doing an exceptional job leading this initial work that will be a crucial foundation for the design phases. Arup brings unique expertise to the theatre planning aspect of this project and we look forward to working with the team.”

David Taylor, recently returned from collaborating as lighting director in the largest live Bollywood dance production in India, is leading the project for Arup, and Joe Solway, lead acoustician from the New York team – and who has dance training – is managing the acoustic environment issues in the building and the challenges from the busy street noise of Brooklyn and the multiple subway lines running under the site.

The project will open early in 2010 and will thrive with more than 38 weeks of performance programming presented by New York City-based cultural organisations, with a focus on theatre, dance and music. The project is being developed as a sustainable building in line with the requirements of New York City and as part of Arup’s ongoing commitment to developing long term sustainable whole-life programmes for arts buildings.
