Eighth Day Sound Takes Custom SD7 Cases

Eighth Day Sound Takes Custom SD7 Cases

UK based flightcase manufacturer 5 Star recently designed and built specially customised flightcases for leading US sound company Eighth Day Sound Systems to house two new DiGiCo SD7 digital consoles.

This follows 5 Star's existing arrangement to supply DiGiCo with casing solutions for the SD7. Eighth Day Sound, based just outside Cleveland, Ohio, ordered two of the recently launched digital consoles, and required additional features as part of the flight case. The cases were based on the DiGiCo supplied model with additional bespoke features specified by Eighth Day.

The case width was increased to allow for additional space in the ‘loom' or ‘dog-box' area, needed to incorporate two additional TFT displays, which are a standard Eighth Day feature. The monitors are mounted on wishbone arms, one each side of the console's support ‘cheeks' which are fitted to the cases.  The TFT displays - being permanently fixed to the wishbones - are then housed in two polyethylene foam lined compartments fixed to the case's hinged rear access flap. This flap is common to all SD7 cases, to allow for the easy removal of the processing engine and redundant PSU's.

Other design features were as per DiGiCo's standard supplied case, which includes profiled rear support ‘cheeks' mounted behind the console's outer edges for optimized support during transit. These ‘cheeks' feature CNC machined DiGiCo branding to compliment the console's lines.

Eighth Day Sound's project manager Jason Kirschnick liaised directly with 5 Star for the additional case requirements. CAD data and technical layouts were exchanged between the two companies, relying heavily on 5 Star's Solid Edge 3D systems which produces AutoCAD compatible files for data exchange.

5 Star produced the two special SD7 cases for Eighth Day Sound in a tight timeframe but on schedule. These were immediately dispatched to DiGiCo's UK production facility in Glenrothes, Scotland for onward shipping to Ohio, complete with the SD7 consoles packed inside!

The consoles and cases went straight to work on several high profile corporate events.  Eighth Day is so pleased with the design, fit and finish of the cases that they have decided 5 Star will build the cases for all their scheduled SD7's.
