Tannoy Raises the Stakes at Vegas Show

Further adding to the company's worldwide heritage as true innovators in loudspeakers, Tannoy Limited announced the US launch of two new sound reinforcement product ranges at InfoComm International 2008 in Las Vegas.

Tannoy's VQ series was first unveiled earlier in the year at Europe's Prolight+Sound show in Frankfurt, but the InfoComm show marked the official launch of the range in the USA. Meanwhile, the company's new audio ‘beam-steering' array product, called QFlex, was given its first official launch and much anticipated demonstration at the Vegas trade show.

The new Tannoy VQ Series is a range of revolutionary loudspeakers designed for any application where precise directional control, outstanding sonic performance, and high SPL's are critical issues; such as large corporate AV systems, stadiums, large dance clubs, live concert halls, theatres, houses of worship and open-air venues. Utilising precision engineering and design, the VQ series can produce enough power and clarity to be used individually, maintaining your building's aesthetics, unlike line array solutions.

VQ incorporates a unique driver technology to radiate a coherent single point source (400Hz - 23kHz) for superior pattern control when coupled to a Point Source Waveguide (PSWTM). This advanced design aligns the acoustical centres of the transducers providing a single coherent wave-front emanating from the throat. The MF/HF transducer loads into a large proprietary designed common horn (Patent pending). This technology allows the specified beam-width to be maintained within a +/-5 degree tolerance, a huge performance advantage when compared to acoustic sources which consist of an HF compression driver and separate midrange driver.

The VQ's high sensitivity ensures exceptional SPL levels can be achieved with a very modest amount of amplifier power. As an example, the VQ 60 will produce 115dB for 1 Watt; and 138dB (144dB peak) for only 200 Watts of amplifier power.

With the Houses of Worship sector in mind during the development of VQ, Tannoy took special note of the specific requirements of this type of venue with regards to both performance and aesthetics. Tannoy's director of business development, Graham Hendry, further qualified VQ's target market: "Through discussions with customers and consultants it soon became very obvious that the Tannoy VQ range had a much more diverse market appeal. VQ has already enjoyed a high profile install in one such alternate sector - at Ibiza's premier dance club, Es Paradis, which has been winning plaudits from clubbers and DJs alike since the summer season opened a few months ago."

VQ was received extremely positively at the InfoComm show by some of the most prominent and influential specifiers, contractors and consultants in North America and looks set to be a big success for Tannoy over the coming year and beyond.

The other big product launch was QFlex, a series of self-powered, digitally steerable loudspeaker arrays using ‘beam-steering' DSP technology. By focusing the acoustical output in the target directions where it is needed Tannoy's revolutionary new range is designed specifically to overcome intelligibility problems associated with highly reverberant surroundings. QFlex will satisfy a host of audio installation requirements such as airports and other transportation hubs, shopping malls, conference facilities, museums, houses of worship and many other locations with problematic acoustics.

Now a part of the VNET range of products, this architecturally pleasing system from Tannoy integrates cutting edge DSP, network control and amplification to provide class-leading steering control (+/- 70 degrees) for not only extremely intelligible speech but also music reinforcement. An exceptionally intuitive GUI provides the installer a very straightforward and logical method of system design and optimisation.
