Bandit Lites 40 at 40: Geddy Kordyjaka

Job Title: Lighting Director
When Geddy Kordyjaka was six years old, a band moved into his basement. It was then that he started playing around with production. Kordyjaka continued to work in production through high school by producing every local band he could. He was the manager of a production company in Canada, and then moved down to the United States to work for a band before settling in with Bandit Lites ten years ago. Here are a few questions we asked to get to know him a little better.
Q: In your opinion, what is the most significant technological advancement since you started working in the entertainment industry?
A: Probably moving lights because when I first started it was Par Cans. Now moving lights have gone to LED moving lights, they have video in them and who knows where they're going to go next.
Q: What's the biggest change you've seen in the industry?
A: The biggest change is a lack of ‘old school mentality". It seems like every new kid wants to be ‘the guy' and doesn't want to learn anything. When I first started, long days didn't faze me. They still don't faze me. I don't enjoy them but it's part of the gig. Figure out how to make your day shorter and easier and put forth an effort to learn from the people around you.
Q: What was your favorite gig and why?
A: I'd probably have to say Deftones. We were a big family. I did a lot of dates with them and I have been to places few people in this company will probably ever see, definitely the new guys. I was the production manager, the LD and a tech on the tour so I had a lot of responsibilities but I was taken care of. I was with them for three years on and off.
Q: How is working for World Wrestling Entertainment different from concert touring?
A: It's completely different. You have to know what you can and can't do. There are a lot of things you can't do because it's TV that you could do at a rock show and vice versa. There was a bit of a learning curve there. I don't think it was as bad as it is for some people because I had some TV experience before. There are a lot of good guys, and you just have to have the mindset that anything can change at any given moment so when changes come, don't get all stressed out about it, just deal with it.
