J. R. Clancy Achieves ISO 9001:2008 Recertification

It's 4:00 p.m. on Friday, and you're reaching for the final bolt for the last loft block on a big rigging installation job. When you put your hand into the hardware bag, however, there's nothing there. You realize in frustration that you're a bolt short...and there's no way to get another one until next week, when you're scheduled elsewhere. You'll have to let your customer down, and plan to return in ten days when you have time available to install this last piece of hardware. What will this cost you in time and aggravation?

This is exactly the kind of situation J. R. Clancy, Inc., has trained its entire staff to prevent, through the process of meeting the requirements set by the International Standards Organization (ISO) for quality management.

J. R. Clancy has recently been recertified for the new ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management Systems standard. Clancy is the only rigging company in the American technical theatre industry to achieve ISO 9001:2008 certification.

Published in November 2008, ISO 9001:2008 is the fourth edition of the standard, which was first published in 1987. The standard underwent a complete revision in 2000 to emphasize its focus on the customer, moving beyond the factory floor and into every point at which the company connects with its customers. The 2008 revision promotes an even greater emphasis on meeting customer requirements, both at the time of product delivery and long after, throughout the product's life-and all while reducing costs through efficiencies for the company as well as the customer.

"Our customers have found that ISO is more than building product correctly-it is directly in line with J. R. Clancy's company goal of providing On-Time, Complete and Correct (OTCC) products and services to our customers," said Mike Murphy, president of J. R. Clancy. "We recognize that sending an order that is missing installation hardware does not help the customer. Sending an order late may cause delays in their installation schedule. Most important, when an error does occur, we need to determine why it happened and take every possible step to keep it from happening again. Our company mission is ‘Make Our Partners Successful,' and to achieve this, we push ourselves and our quality management system to comply with the new ISO 9001:2008 standard requirements."

J. R. Clancy completed its first ISO audit in 2002 and became the first U.S. designer, manufacturer and installer of theatrical rigging to have its quality management system certified to the rigorous ISO 9001:2000 standard. Each year, J. R. Clancy undergoes an exhaustive audit by the ISO Registrar, and a complete recertification audit is required every three years.
