Trained as an electronics engineer, Nicolas de Courten founded Power Light Productions Ltd. in Basel, Switzerland in 1977 and it soon became a leading rental and sales lighting company to the entertainment industry operating in Switzerland and throughout Europe. Under his guidance as managing director Power Light supplied lighting design services and equipment supply to the famed Montreux Jazz Festival for eight consecutive years from 1983 to 1990.

Other major credits included work as LD for Krokus, Nazareth, Nana Mouskouri and the German singer Udo Jürgens. In 1988 Power light supplied the complete TV lighting rig for the Eurovision production of the Football World Cup in Italy in 1990. A highlight came in 1989 with the full TV and show lighting contract for the Eurovision Song Contest Final in Lausanne. Then, in 1990 and 1993 the company supplied the lighting rigs for Tina Turner, Joe Cocker, Chris de Burgh and Brian Adams concerts in Switzerland with LDs Shawn Richardson and John Malamazian, and many more.

Regular customers on the company books across the period included Swiss National Television SRG, German National Television stations ARD and ZDF, Mercedes Benz, Swiss Airline Crossair, Swiss pharmaceutical companies CIBA and Roche, Swiss watch manufacturers EBEL and Vacheron Constatin.

In 1996 Nicolas sold the company and the following year founded Nicolux Lichttechnik, also based in Basel. This operates as a consultancy, project planning and sales lighting company, again operating in Switzerland and throughout Europe.

Active, fit and strong, Nicolas has no problem with the black ski runs and when he trips off to Florida, the Caribbean or the Maldives he is a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.
