His designs dislodged the Victorian theatre from its dependence on the Georgian playhouse and ushered in a new modernity utilising the latest technology in lighting, stage machinery and building construction and his work was a major influence on younger architects, notably Frank Matcham. Success in Scotland for PLASA Focus Glasgow 2018 PLASA Focus Glasgow kicked off the 2018 show season last month, providing a regional platform for professionals in the industry to connect and discover the latest technology in the market.Held at the Scottish Event Campus, the well-attended show welcomed nearly 800 attendees through the doors over two days. Exhibitors reported busy stands, as well as a high quality of visitors including key decision makers from Scottish events and production teams.Over 85 brands showcased the latest products in lighting, audio, AV, rigging and staging, as well as a busy programme of seminars, workshops and product demonstrations. For exhibitors, the Focus style show provided an ideal platform to build connections in a new market, and meet customers who often don’t travel to the larger international shows. This approach was embraced by audio exhibitor KV2 Audio, who expanded their offering by hosting a demo room alongside their exhibition stand. Attendees could listen to the ultra-compact passive ESD 25 loudspeaker with active EX 1.5 subwoofer and EX 15 loudspeakers at drop in sessions running throughout the show.Production services supplier Adlib also hosted a demo room, offering visitors the chance to demo products including the new SYVA Colinear System from L-Acoustics, the latest SQ Series console from Allen & Heath, the M32 console from Midas and the SD12 console from DiGiCo.It was a full house for The Enchanted Forest seminar with award-winning duo Simon Hayes and Kate Bonney. They revealed how they wowed huge audiences with their unique lighting designs amidst a Scottish Highland forest, and overcame unusual problems such as squirrels eating flightcase foam.Other notable highlights on the programme were the Riggers Forum which saw discussion regarding manufacturer instructions: Oran Burns from d&b audiotechnik who led two highly informative seminars about frequency response for live sound systems, and BECTU who presented its research on the extent of ‘long hours culture’ across the creative sectors.Christopher Toulmin, commercial director of PLASA comments: “It’s been another wonderful year in Glasgow and a great start to 2018. Despite rather unfavourable weather conditions [a snow storm hit Glasgow during the show] there was a great buzz to the show floor, the quality of visitors was high and business was being done.“Our next stop is Leeds, where we will be celebrating the ever-popular PLASA Focus Leeds’s tenth anniversary. We have some exciting plans in development to mark the special occasion in style.”February 2018news4GDS Raises Curtain on ArcLamp Fade to Warm at Bristol HippodromeThe Bristol Hippodrome is one of Britain’s top provincial theatres and last year, having reached the venerable age of 105 years old, was due a facelift, part of which was to replace its tungsten house light system with a modern, sustainable LED alternative.Key to the entire project was the requirement to ensure that none of the theatre’s splendid Edwardian look and atmosphere was compromised during the upgrade. Whilst the existing tungsten illumination could not be faulted for the quality of its light, on the energy consumption and maintenance side of the equation, it simply had to go. In short, the new system had to emulate as closely as possible the character of tungsten light, whilst at the same time saving energy and the daily, time-consuming routine of replacing blown lamps.Owners ATG were aware of GDS’s reputation through having installed the Bristol company’s BluesSystem working lights at The Hippodrome back in 2005, declaring them to work “fantastically well”. A conversation began in respect of a new house light system and GDS introduced ATG to ArcLamp Fade To Warm, its latest cutting edge LED development. Integrator Push The Button (PTB), who already had wide experience of working with GDS, was engaged by ATG to install the system.ArcLamp Fade To Warm (FTW) is the latest signpost on the GDS ArcSystem journey, marking another breakthrough in the application of LED lighting technology. During a two-year process GDS succeeded in achieving the perfect emulation of a tungsten lamp, not only in terms of colour rendering but also in its capacity to dim to an atmospheric warm ambience. Much technology has been placed into a lamp that can run for 55,000 hours (owing to its intelligent thermal management) whilst exactly matching the appearance of a 45W light bulb. At the Hippodrome, PTB retrofitted more than 200 ArcLamp Candle Clear FTW fixtures, largely utilising the building’s existing wiring. ArcSystem’s capacity for retrofit was essential, given that to rewire a listed building on such a scale would have involved prohibitive costs.Managing director at GDS, Matt Lloyd was delighted with the reaction of all the stakeholders to the installation: “Perhaps the most significant thing to observe about the installation of ArcLamp Fade to Warm at The Hippodrome is that it hasn’t been noticed by the theatre’s patrons nor affect in any way the objectives of producers and companies using the theatre. Fade to Warm wins on both counts and in terms of its capacity to reduce costs, is already having a significant impact on the day to day running of the Bristol Hippodrome.”www.gds.uk.comFull story etnow.com Project News4Issue: 200news5 Visit our new website …www.rubberbox.co.ukPortable PowerStandard or bespoke boxes for outdoor useT. +44 (0)1282 677910 E.info@rubberbox.co.ukProtec Begins Operations in BirminghamAs New Year announcements in the events industry go, one that will certainly shake things up in the UK and Europe is Protec’s latest statement. The company which offers a comprehensive suite of services, including creative and technical design, production, lighting, audio, video, staging, rigging and venue support services has been known for its slick productions for events of a variety of categories and sizes.Commenting on this announcement, Stephen Lakin, Protec’s founder and CEO said: “I have a lot of time for Chris Bramwell and the team. They have built up a strong business and I’m thrilled to welcome them into the Protec family. I am looking forward to the opportunity to introduce their customers to a wider global reach and more exciting tools and technology to create unique and memorable event experiences.”Bramwell will continue to lead the company to execute on their growth plans but with the backing of the vast resources of Protec. “Aventeq, which of course I’m thrilled to say, is now Protec European Events, has a similar passion to Protec. With investments in excess of $80 million in the UAE alone, Protec has always been ahead of the game with technology and equipment and has been comfortable handling multiple events of any size, from small meetings to stadium shows.Protec started operations in 1999 with 12 employees and increased its staff to 21 when it purchased Varilite Middle East and has steadily grown to a 147 strong team of full time employees across all disciplines today. Their growth has included the largest and most memorable shows the region has seen (both corporate and rock and roll) as well as thousands of smaller meetings and events. A key factor Lakin claims that has contributed to the company’s success is that it treats every event (whether it is the smallest of small events or a mega-show) with the same dedication and commitment. This approach, he adds, has cemented Protec’s relationships with its clients and has also played its part in the growth of the company as well as the industry in the Middle East. “Protec European Events shares our passion and I’m looking forward to extending this commitment across the UK and Europe,” Lakin concludes. In picture: Steve Lakin and Chris Bramwell. The move sees the business change to the new name of Sprand Communications, under the management of Lesley’s colleague Sarah Thomas, and the closure of Harmer PR, the business which Lesley started almost 40 years ago.Sarah said: “Harmer PR gave me my first job in the industry in 2002, where I stayed for three years, leaving to gain experience in the world of consumer PR. Lesley and I got back together in early 2012, when she closed the London office and I began to work for her again, this time on a freelance basis.”Lesley commented: “Over the past six years, Sarah and I have known the end goal was my retirement. When I moved to the country a few years back, we began a gradual handover, so there has been no impact on our clients or the quality of our service.”This was confirmed by Julian Chiverton, sales director at client company Doughty Engineering, who said: “It has been a great pleasure to have worked with Lesley who has handled Doughty's PR for six years. We would like to thank Lesley for all of her hard work and wish her a very enjoyable retirement. As Sarah has stepped into Lesley's shoes over the last few years, we've been extremely lucky to have experienced a seamless handover. We are confident that as Sarah takes the reins, our profile within the industry will continue to flourish."Lizzie Richmond, operations manager at Unusual Rigging added: "Lesley has done so much to raise Unusual's profile since taking on our PR 8 years ago. We will of course be sad to see her take a step back but equally having worked closely with Sarah for the last five years, we are excited to see her take us forward with her new ideas and enthusiasm and we look forward to being a client of Sprand Communications."The handover will continue smoothly, as Lesley will be supporting Sarah on a consultancy basis. “It’s the perfect balance,” said Lesley. “The time is right to hand over the baton, but equally I’m not sure I could ever tear myself away from this wonderful industry completely.Sarah added: “Lesley has been the most amazing mentor over the past two decades. From my early days working at Harmer PR as a fresh face in this business, she has given me countless opportunities to grow professionally. Her support has been second to none and I know this will continue to be the case as I develop Sprand Communications.February 2018news8Chauvet Opens French SubsidiaryChauvet has announced the opening of Chauvet France, a wholly-owned subsidiary located in Paris. Featuring the patented Alcons pro-ribbon driver technology, the CRMSC-SRHV surround combines an exceptional clarity and intelligibility with an unusually high dynamic range, offering the most realistic sound reproduction possible. The CRMSC-SRHV system consists of one RBN202 pro-ribbon driver for HF and a vented 6.5” mid-bass for LF reproduction. The CRMSC-SRHV HF section has an 500W peak power input, enabling a 1:16 dynamic range with up to 90% less distortion from 1kHz to beyond 20kHz.The patented (90-degrees) horizontal and patent-pending (60-degrees) vertical dispersion offers a wide and consistent coverage to a larger number of seats in the auditorium; Due to the “compression-less” principle of the pro-ribbon transducer, the system has a linear response at any SPL.The CRMSC-SRHV is designed as matching (height layer) surround system for the CRMSC system; by utilising identical MHF components, a perfect voicing matching between screen- and surround system is realized, resulting in an exceptionally wide and uniform sound stage throughout the entire listening area. The revolvable RBN waveguide and trapezoidal enclosure together with the optional grill and ACO colour option, provides for easy, low profile wall or ceiling mounting. For full system performance, the CRMSC-SRHV needs to be driven by an ALC controller-amplifier, delivering maximum sound quality with increased headroom and utmost operation reliability. The Signal Integrity Sensing pre-wiring ensures complete cable/connector compensation between the CRMSC-SRHOR and ALC, significantly increasing response accuracy, regardless of cable length and system impedance, with tight and accurate mid and bass response as result. Typical applications include (height layer) surround sound system for premium home cinemas, high-end mix/screening rooms, quality-conscious post-production facilities and dubbing stages. As a result of Alcons’ tight manufacturing standards, all system cabinets are within ‘matched pair’ tolerance.Phil ‘Dr. Phil’ De Haan, head of Alcons R&D stated: “The CRMSC-SRHV is the first speaker that incorporates our patent-pending vertical-control waveguide technology. The initial beta-testing proved the validity of the concept, with many praises from listeners on the quality of the immersive details and coverage. “Until now, the undisputed quality of the pro-ribbons was sometimes limited in application by the natural behaviour in the vertical / non-coupling plane. Some try to overcome this by using multiple drivers, but with severe compromises in imaging due to comb-filtering. We’ve taken a different development approach, which results in increased coverage, while still maintaining the purity of a single driver source. Needless to say, more point-source systems will be launched with this technology.”The official introduction will take place at the coming ISE show in Amsterdam, as part of the Alcons Pro-Ribbon Immersive Experience (booth 6H150).Michael Feldmann Turns Full Circle as he Rejoins GLPIt was at Showtech in Berlin that Michael Feldmann and GLP founder and CEO Udo Künzler met for the first time. GLP had previously caused a stir in the industry with the now legendary Patendlight and YPOC series and as a student Michael was looking for an internship as part of his lighting technology studies. “Here, the door to the event industry opened up for me and fulfilled a long-awaited dream to work for a renowned moving head manufacturer,” he said. “Udo then offered me the opportunity to take care of production as a German engineer in China, which I gratefully accepted.”The paths of Feldmann and GLP were soon to part again. For four years he worked as a project manager and planning engineer in the field of architainment. But the passion that had originally sparked GLP duly led him back into the event industry for a number of years. Michael Feldman gained extensive experience in project and product management at one of the largest manufacturers in the industry, and built up extensive contacts with investors, designers and technicians.“After a good 12 years, I am now very happy to be back at GLP. Of course, over the years I have never lost sight of the company and have always been able to follow how GLP has developed into an internationally renowned manufacturer in our industry. I have watched in admiration as the GLP brand established itself in the professional sector, and today their products are indispensable in almost all segments of the industry,” he states as the basis of his decision to rejoin GLP.Udo Künzler, too, is delighted with the return of his ‘lost son’: “Over the past 12 years, we at GLP and Michael have often been in direct competition with each other, but always fair and somehow always with a certain sense of interconnectedness. We are incredibly proud that Michael finally chose us and not one of the many other offers he had.” Udo goes on further to say: “We are now an international company and I firmly believe that one of our success factors is our excellent manufacturer-customer relationship of trust. It is this, in combination with flexibility and reliability, and of course suitable products that are the key to our success in the future. And Michael, as product and portfolio manager, will certainly have a great role to play in that.”Michael Feldmann started working at GLP from 1st January 2018. “I take on the job with a great sense of anticipation, and as a contact for GLP products, market feedback, optimisation and future product alignment, do everything possible to bring quality requirements and required feature packages for the best user satisfaction to the maximum.”In picture: Udo Künzler and Michael Feldmanwww.glp.de7news9Issue: 300Mick HughesThe ALD reports that internationally acclaimed lighting designer and Association Fellow Mick Hughes passed away on 4th January 2018. Much admired for his simple, clean and effective approach to lighting design Mick had a long list of credits across nearly 50 years of work in UK Theatre collaborating with many high-profile directors, designers and venues including Harold Pinter, Sir Alan Ayckbourn, the National Theatre, Chichester Festival Theatre and the Royal Court Theatre. He won the inaugural TMA Award for Lighting Design in 2008 for The Children’s Hour at The Royal Exchange Theatre Manchester, and was awarded an ALD Fellowship in 2000.ALD chair Johanna Town who had often worked with Mick remembered him as “a beautiful and talented designer and generous and lovely man who was a great collaborator with the whole team. I will miss him being in this world but know he will live on in many people’s hearts and designs.”Deputy chair Mark Jonathan commented: “He was greatly loved and admired in the lighting community and taught so many of us so much.”The thoughts of the ALD are with Mick’s friends and family at this time, but especially with his long-time friend and agent Clare Fox, and production electrician Bill Wardroper who has spent much time supporting Mick recently. In picture: Mick Hughes (right) receives his ALD award from Mark Jonathan.www.ald.org.ukLondon’s Arts Club Selects Allen & Heath DliveAmong the most exclusive live music venues in London, The Arts Club has recently invested in an Allen & Heath dLive digital mixing system as part of a significant audio upgrade programme. Founded in 1863 by Charles Dickens, Anthony Trollope and Lord Leighton, The Arts Club is a premium members-only venue that attracts a top-end clientele, for live music, art and fashion events, and private parties.Supplied by SSE Audio Group, the new set-up is based around a dLive S5000 surface with both Dante and AES3 I/O audio networking cards installed, and a DM48 MixRack. An Allen & Heath ME-1 personal mixer is also now employed for drum monitoring duties.“The mainstays of The Arts Club tech team use dLive systems out on the road,” explains Richard Watts, SSE Audio group sales manager, “including Jonathan Lewis (Travis FOH) and Dave McDonald (Frank Ocean FOH), so it was an obvious choice for the venue.”“The team needed sufficient AES outputs for the LCRS mix and five-way monitor mix – the venue’s L-Acoustics amplification has digital AES3 inputs – so the addition of the networking cards in the dLive makes for a very easy, flexible solution for them.”“The flexibility and fast workflow of the dLive system is incredible,” said Charles Bidwell, The Arts Club’s head technician, “It’s like a hybrid of my favourite features from all my favourite desks; drag-and-drop fader population, great preamps and EQ, a brilliant surface and very versatile patching.”“When touring engineers – of which we get many at The Arts Club – use it for the first time it becomes familiar instantaneously and I’ve had nothing but good feedback from them. In fact, I like the dLive system so much I purchased my own dLive C1500 surface and CDM32 MixRack for FOH duties on Santan Dave’s UK tour.”In picture: Charles BidwellNext >
