In addition students will be saving on student living costs as they can access the modules remotely. The programme offers students a comprehensive range of online modules led by a team of expert practitioner-academics, providing both theoretical and practice-based perspectives as they study working theatres, practitioners, playwrights and directors alongside theatre studies at large. The College has been running a part-time distance learning programme in Theatre Studies for over 20 years with graduates progressing into a range of careers including directing, arts administration and teaching.Programme director, Jayne Richards believes the full-time route will prove equally as popular: “Using our experience of developing a part-time online programme for mature students, we believe we have created a comprehensive but flexible programme of study to equip a diverse range of students. They will receive a rigorous academic grounding in the practices, histories, contexts and methodologies of a very wide spectrum of theatre and performance-related subjects, as well as core transferable skills, which they can use in their chosen profession.”The College’s principal, Clarie Middleton, says the awarding of Taught Degree Awarding Powers (TDAP) in 2017 has given the College greater flexibility to meet students and industry needs: “Gaining TDAP has allowed us to develop alternative, flexible and affordable provision with clear progression routes into employment. The onus is on higher education institutions, like ourselves, to encourage students from a non-traditional university background to consider studying for a degree.”In addition to the BA (Hons) Theatre Studies programme the College also offers flexible online programmes in BA (Hons) Music Studies and BA (Hons) Opera Studies.Full course and application details can be found at www.bruford.ac.uk4Issue: 302news5Strong Lighting joins forces with Phoebus ManufacturingStrong Lighting and Phoebus Manufacturing have announced that the full line of Phoebus followspots and searchlights will now be sold, serviced and manufactured by Strong Lighting. Danny will provide field based sales and support for the company’s expanding range of leading lighting brands.Danny has grown into the industry over the last eight years working with Rosco (UK) focusing on the LED solutions for the film and TV market. Danny says: “I’m looking forward to the exciting challenges and learning from two of the best in Andy and Rob!”Flashlight directors Andy Dodd and Rob Williamson commented: “We’re delighted to welcome Danny to the company. His enthusiasm and hunger in the Film/ TV lighting market allows us to continue to be in front of end users and support new business with a strong presence.”Flashlight Ltd is a leading UK supplier of lighting equipment to the broadcast, motion picture and theatre industries. Operating from Manchester and London bases, they have been satisfying the needs of local and national productions since 2002, and have expanded rapidly now supplying freelancers, productions, studios, and theatres across Europe and beyond.Professional Associations and Entertainment Unions form Working Group Following a series of exchanges of resources and knowledge among professional associations representing set, costume and lighting designers, representatives from the Society of British Theatre Designers (SBTD) and the Association of Lighting Designers (ALD) have formed a working group with representatives from Equity and BECTU to discuss the key issues affecting designers. This will be the first time that all of these organisations have come together to evaluate and unpack the complex nature of current working terms and conditions for designers. In considering changes that need to be implemented for the current workforce, the aim is to work towards fair, clear and robust models of engagement. This will make a significant contribution to developing a more diverse profession, something that UK Theatre and SOLT identified as a key priority within the Theatre Workforce Review they commissioned and published last year.As clear and transparent career paths and increasing diversity of entry into the cultural sector are also key priorities for Arts Council England (ACE), the Creative Industries Federation and some of the largest producing houses, it is important to seize the opportunity that this aligning of objectives provides. The working group will be situating these concerns about fees and contracts within the wider context of fear, bullying and harassment that we are now beginning to evidence has been endemic across the whole of the industry for some time.If a profession is perceived as one in which its members are afraid to speak out for fear of not being engaged to work again, then acting together now to do something about that is vital, both for those struggling to sustain a career as a designer now at every level of the profession, and for the diverse and resilient workforce of the future that the group aspires to enable.April 2018news8New ADB Hathor release 2.0ADB has released version 2.0 of its Hathor software.
