The #SaveStageLighting Campaign must demonstrate to the EU Energy Directorate, the widest possible cultural opposition to these proposals. Theatrical performances rely on theatrical lighting; it is the glue that binds every aspect of a performance together. Theatre lighting relies on having the right tools available to create just the right effect at just the right moment. A successful outcome to the #SaveStageLighting campaign is essential to secure exemption for stage lighting from these proposals. The consequences of failure would be catastrophic to the entertainment industry and European culture. This will potentially harm everyone from technicians, actors and designers to agents, critics and audience members. 16 Cirque Robe Wows the Crowds at Prolight Robe enjoyed an incredibly busy and successful Prolight+Sound 2018 expo, which saw its exhibition live show concept taken to new levels with ‘Cirque Robe’, a colourful, high-energy six-minute performance spectacle and circus style presentation with a cast of 11, designed to highlight the Czech manufacturer’s latest lighting technologies. Another highlight was Robe’s new MegaPointe multi-purpose moving light winning a 2018 PIPA (Prolight + Sound International Press Award) for ‘Best Light’, a decision reached by a jury of international trade journalists who meet annually in Frankfurt. The MegaPointe was one of the primary fixtures featured in the stand show, where Robe continued to raise the bar in presenting unique live exhibition entertainment, with an ever-rising element of expectation accompanying each one.18 Prolight+Sound Frankfurt 2018 April 10 – 13. It was felt to be of the highest priority to ensure that the voice of an actor of such experience and considered opinion should be heard at an event that seeks to be seminal for both the leading and the emerging talents working in the design and specification of places of entertainment.Named in Time Magazine’s 2016 100 Most Influential People List, Mark’s work includes a ten-year tenure as the first artistic director of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre (1996-2006), which included the construction of the theatre and International Shakespeare Globe Centre. He founded the organisation’s architectural review group, which is at present reviewing the architectural decisions of 1996-97 in the light of 20 years’ experience of playing at the Globe. In January of this year it was announced that he would return to the Globe Theatre stage in July 2018, to play Iago in Shakespeare’s Othello.Mark Rylance (pictured) was knighted in 2017 for Services to Theatre. photo: Steve PykeUnusual Announced as Global SponsorUnusual Rigging Ltd has been announced as a global sponsor of ITEAC 2018. There is, however, some confusion as to what the standard does and does not define. For example, it’s clear when an incandescent fixture reaches its end of life, it simply stops working. With LED fixtures it’s not as obvious because LEDs slowly get dimmer over time. The L70 rating was created as a way to measure when the LEDs of a fixture are no longer “useful.” This rating is determined from an outcome of testing to the LM84 standard and gives a representation of the amount of hours it will take for LEDs to depreciate to 70 per cent of their original output. The LM84 standard is complex and can take thousands of hours to complete. Therefore, ETC has elected to send full LED fixtures to a nationally-recognised, third-party test lab for comprehensive evaluation. This lab tests fixtures in an environment that replicates how the end user will use them. One of the biggest misconceptions about the L70 rating is that it applies to the entire fixture, when in fact it only applies to the LEDs themselves. The way a fixture is manufactured, including the quality of thermal management systems, heavily dictates the life expectancy of the LEDs. This is why ETC sends the full fixture for testing – users should be confident that the LED rating for their fixture will not be impacted by additional hardware or software components.ETC is proud to announce that, upon completed testing, several of its fixtures are reaching higher L70 ratings than originally anticipated.ETC has always put product quality first and the recent L70 ratings reaffirm that commitment. To solidify this dedication to quality they’ve decided to pass the peace of mind along to users through increased warranties. All full ETC LED fixtures now hold a five year full fixture warranty and a ten year LED array warranty.www.etcconnect.com/LEDwarrantyColour Unlimited with Elation’s New SEVEN Batten SeriesBuilding on the success of the SixBar series of colour-changing LED battens, Elation Professional now offers the SEVEN Batten, a new line of linear lighting effects using the latest seven-colour multi-chip LED technology for an even more flexible colour wash solution.Housing long-life individual 25W 7-IN-1 RGBAW + Lime + UV LEDs, with the SEVEN Batten series the LED colour spectrum has never been wider. QC-Check’s test database and logging software will be fully integrated into WL’s InspHire asset management system, which will provide real-time tracked test results for the company’s entire hire inventory. The first single-bay QC-Check workstation – custom-built by SES Entertainment Services Ltd – will arrive within weeks. The most complex of the order, the distro department’s QC-Check workstation, is designed for optimal workflow in the quick and efficient checking of multiple power distribution outlets. Heavier-duty distro connectors are positioned conveniently at the front, whilst the smaller 32amp outlets are configured into a Bridge unit which can be located on a work bench for ease of access.WL’s health & safety and workforce development director, Chris Nicholls, explains: “The integration side of QC-Check won us over. We know other companies using QC-Check and Out Board systems who are very happy with the product: it’s built well, made to last and delivers the goods. The fact that it integrates with our existing asset management system is what we really wanted. He continues: “The bottom line is it significantly cuts a lot of worry about health and safety. The ability to have test results assigned to a contract and to a piece of equipment and then be able to access those results immediately is quite a heavy driving force. It’s also always beneficial when efficiency saves more money – both are equal drivers.”In picture: White Light’s Dave Isherwood seals the deal with Data Strategy Limited’s Iain Roche at Pro Light + Sound, Frankfurt.Philips Vari-Lite introduces VL800 BeamLineThe new VL800 BeamLine from Philips Entertainment Lighting is an LED effects luminaire offering unique, dynamic looks which will appeal to lighting designers working in show environments of all kinds. The connection is bi-directional, so the remote device can also update the console’s generic OSC controls if settings are changed on the device itself.DiGiCo provides eight user definable rotaries and eight switches that are displayed on all the console’s input channels and send the custom OSC messages when adjusted. These are mapped to the console’s underscreen rotaries and switches for ease of use.An early adopter of this functionality is d&b audiotechnik’s Soundscape, which is part of a series of landmark integrations between Soundscape’s central DS100 Signal Engine and digital mixing consoles, including the SD Range, which opens bi-directional interoperability between the DS100 via plug ins operating on the OSC protocol. The plug in allows engineers to work with their existing sound console workflows, yet have access to a whole new world of creative potential by bringing the settings for object-based positioning and room emulation directly on to the console surface for each individual channel. The settings can then be stored in the mixer’s scene memory.“Generic OSC can be used by any third party wanting to take advantage of our work surfaces to control their own technology. This opens up a world of possibilities,” says DiGiCo maging director, James Gordon. “We are delighted that d&b has chosen DiGiCo to join the Soundscape family. Integrating with Soundscape to maximise its creativity is something our clients would expect to see from us.”www.digico.bizMay 2018news8ArKaos Enjoys Busy Prolight+SoundMedia solutions and control specialist ArKaos enjoyed a busy and proactive Prolight+Sound expo in Frankfurt, as an action-packed four days saw the company revealing its innovative new An-Ki scheduling system, and highlighting MediaMaster 5.2, the newly-launched latest release of its hugely popular real-time video control platform.Managing director Agnes Wojewoda stated: “We experienced another very busy show this year and saw a good mix of high quality European and international visitors, with people from the US, Latin America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa as well as Pan Pacific regions.“Particularly interesting to us was the increase in professionals and practitioners working in the architectural and architainment sectors which, to us, reinforced the belief that there is a hunger for new technology in these markets.”This trend tied in perfectly with the launch of An-Ki, which addresses the need for flexible, cost-effective and fully mobile control of media interfaces.
