This is the first time that the country has hosted the competition, following the success of Salvador Sobral who won the 2017 contest. The Lisbon Arena, located at the capital city’s seashore, hosted the event which was live broadcast to millions of viewers across the world. Of course no event like this comes together without months of meticulous planning – from infrastructure to logistics, engineering and not to mention health and safety – which is where BroadWeigh comes in.22 Jobs for the Boys “This is a Man’s World” sang James Brown. And he was absolutely right of course, when he continued with the words “But it would be nothing without a woman or a girl.” We’d be naive to say that the rigging world is a mixed one – it’s without doubt one of the more male dominated industries. But as Unusual Rigging worked with Artichoke in June to stage an event celebrating 100 years since women got the vote, we caught up with Emily Egleton, Unusual’s brilliant (female) design engineer.24 RJ Dalis 860 Cyclight has Compagnie DCA / Philippe Decouflé’s Nouvelles Pièces Courtes covered Lighting designer Begoña Garcia-Navas used Robert Juliat fixtures to complement each different dance piece through her use of lighting, choosing 20 Robert Juliat Dalis 860 Cyclight LED batten fixtures to light the massive cyclorama backdrop, and Robert Juliat profiles, including 613SX, 614SX, 713SX and 714SX fixtures, as conventional lighting. A unique feature of the Astera system is the control. Using a simple, yet powerful Android or iOS App, users can create and schedule stunning pre-planned lighting effects without having to deal with DMX addresses or lighting desks. Of course, DMX control is also supported for larger wireless productions. All fixture models are compatible with the App which can be used to adjust frequency to avoid camera flicker and manage the lifetime of the battery. A hand-held IR remote is also available for the ultimate in control simplicity. Designed to be flexible, the Astera wireless fixtures can be used to wash walls or highlight features and are suitable or indoor and outdoor use. They can work from their internal battery for up to 20 hours or can be hard wired for longer events. The Astera range features the powerful and highly creative AX1 (Pixeltube), a waterproof, pixel controllable RGBW tube, offering a large range of possibilities. The AX3 (Lightdrop) is the most popular of the Astera range, it is magnetic and can be used hanging or free-standing. The AX5, is the perfect smarter replacement for existing wireless uplighters and indeed wired PAR fixtures. And for when extra power and a true workhorse is needed, then the AX7 and AX10 suit. Both offer high brightness and advanced battery life. There is even a range of filters and diffuser-dome accessories that expand the creative possibilities. Ambersphere Solutions now carry the whole range, as well as a wide stock of spares and accessories.Zactrack provides a simple way to track people and objects in a 3D performance environment. It’s easy to use, fast to deploy and can be integrated into a wide range of lighting, video and audio applications. The most obvious use for Zactrack is as an automated followspot system to control multiple moving lights to follow multiple performers in 3D.Zactrack uses Ultra High Frequency technology, avoiding any frustrating line-of-sight issues. The system tracks the position of small discrete rechargeable tags which can be mounted within costumes, taped to wireless mic packs or simply placed in a jacket pocket.Using a modular system of UHF Anchors, Zactrack creates a radio ‘mesh’ and allows users to expand their tracking area by simply adding anchors as required. Fixture calibration is handled by a light-sensitive puck which simplifies and automates the process.Zactrack can operate stand-alone but is designed to integrate perfectly with any lighting system. The console operator can assign lights to follow tags on the fly and the Zactrack system can take care of zonal control functions seamlessly.Ambersphere Solutions has a full demo system set up in its West London showroom.www.ambersphere.co.ukContact us – Tel: 01777 948089 email: info@ropeandrigging.co.ukUnit 6 Rossington’s Business Park, West Carr Road, Retford, Notts, DN22 7SWTheatrical and Entertainment Rigging SuppliesLight Fantastic Production Services – supporting new talentDelivering a strong academic curriculum for 14 to 19-year-olds, dove-tailed with specialist courses in creative arts and media production, EUTC is an industry recognised centre for excellence in the arts.Working closely with tutors at the school, LFPS recently welcomed three Key Stage 5 students from the BTEC Production Technology Course to their Borehamwood base.Always keen to nurture new talent, LFPS are delighted to partner EUTC, assisting in the provision of work experience throughout key departments at the company. From this hub, the company distributes over 1,700 product lines and hardware including 19-inch racking, flightcase components and loudspeaker elements directly to B2B and B2C customers all over Europe. The new facility will assist the busy operation in continuing and streamlining the efficient and fast delivery of products worldwide which are manufactured by Penn in the UK, for which the company is renowned. It was imperative to stay in the same regional location explains Dennis Marco Meertens, co-MD of Penn Elcom GmbH with Thomas Mostar. “Elten is perfectly positioned for expedient onward transportation and delivery to our local and regional sales teams, a very successful model devised to best understand specific cultural needs, demands and variations, which represent a variety of different market sectors,” he commented. This made finding suitable premises that bit more challenging, however this excellent opportunity then presented itself. The German distribution centre is set to dramatically expand the number of Penn product lines with which it deals in the coming months due to the extra space. Penn Elcom GmbH currently has 35 full time employees, and every week receives an artic packed with 24 tonnes of new products from the UK for dispatching on to other destinations, from as far north as Scandinavia and the Baltics to as far south as Greece and Portugal. The new building, close to the Dutch border, was previously used for distribution, so already had substantial infrastructure in place that was of direct benefit to Penn.Penn Elcom’s markets in Europe have remained solid over the years, and become extremely buoyant in the last two and a half, with the launch of the Penn Elcom online sales portal at the start of 2016. Overall, the European market is very good and sales continue to grow, so Penn Elcom GmbH is confident about the future. “It definitely looks bright!” confirms Dennis. The move to the new warehouse in Germany was completed in four phases over the course of eight working days and involved “a lot of improvisation and lateral thinking by all involved,” says Dennis, as the full sales operation had to continue at full-pace throughout the period. With the increase in space, the new warehouse now accommodates each and every product in a premium position for picking, a task now automated and completed using electric pickers, which really speeds up this part of the process.Having all the product lines in one place now is another massive advantage. Towards the end of the previous building’s tenure they were stored in three different locations, as over 14 years, the space was outgrown. He feels that the new warehouse and systems implementation will take the company to the next levels of service and support for all its clients. Customers will notice the effects immediately and this will reinforce Penn as their first choice for reliability, high quality and expertly engineered products available from a one solution brand / supplier for all their needs. In picture: The Penn Germany teamwww.pennelcomonline.comAugust 2018news6Elation’s all-weather Cuepix 16 IP LED matrix panel As more and more projects and shows are staged outdoors, Elation Professional is again expanding on its leading line of multi-environmental IP-rated products with the new Cuepix 16 IP. The Cuepix 16 IP is a powerful 4x4 matrix LED blinder and effect panel with all-weather IP65 protection. An updated version of the company’s Cuepix Panel, Elation’s popular 5 x 5 LED matrix panel that has enjoyed great success since launching five years ago, the Cuepix 16 IP fulfils the need for more IP-rated blinder/effect options.Lighting fixtures mounted on a downstage truss-like blinder/effect lights, or general area wash fixtures, are especially exposed to the elements. Now designers can add high-impact colour or white light, eye candy or pixel-mapped effects, to productions of all types, indoors or out, without the worry of weather and cost and inconvenience of protective coverings. The sleekly-designed Cuepix 16 IP houses 16 long-life 30W RGBA COB LEDs for a full spectrum of well-balanced, custom colours (saturates to pastels) with no pixelated rainbow shadows. The added amber LED compared to the RGB-based Cuepix Panel extends the possible range of colours and gives more control over white balance, producing a better warm white. The COB LEDs give a higher-density output and a more even light distribution for superior all-around performance. Each COB module is individually controllable for a wider scope of design possibilities while RGB, dynamic amber and pixel flip modes add to its creative potential. The five included pixel flip modes make it easier for users to uniformly configure all pixels in multi-panel configurations regardless of their installation orientation. The high-power LED colour matrix projects a wide 62° beam angle with an 87° field angle for better coverage while maintaining a high level of uniformity. When used with cameras, the silent fixture works absolutely flicker-free thanks to its user-adjustable LED refresh rate and Gamma brightness settings. The Cuepix 16 IP dims smoothly all the way to zero with adjustable dimming curves included for programming ease. The fixture also includes an adjustable high-speed strobe (1-18fps) for those energetic flashes of light.Full details etnow.com Equipment NewsCapital Builds Largest Optocore Network for Roger Waters in Hyde ParkAs the Barclaycard Presents British Summer Time festival in London’s Hyde Park has continued to grow organically since its inception in 2013, so sound production company, Capital Sound, has deployed an increasing number of its Optocore converters to provide digital signal transmission over optical fibre across the vast site. But nothing quite prepared them for the opening day this year when Roger Waters brought his Us + Them tour to the UK for the first time, having already taken his sonic and visual experimentation to breath-taking levels at Desert Trip in 2016, with the biggest surround sound system ever built. To create maximum impact at Hyde Park, Capital was asked to provide an additional 12 loudspeaker hangs on towers positioned through the concourse for one night only, and this 12-point surround sound set-up, designed to give the audience a truly immersive experience, required Capital Sound’s Robin Conway to design a new Optocore multi-node system based around 21 X6R-FX-8AE/8MI interfaces and an Optocore DD32R-FX at FOH to accommodate an AES signal distribution.Capital deployed all their own Optocore interfaces with Gilles Bouvard’s GB4D in France supplying additional surround sound units linked by 24 lengths of multimode fibre across 1km of the site to create the loop and the DD32R-FX AES interface.Capital project manager, Robin Conway explained: “I wanted to run the show AES. The feeds onto the network were all AES and the system was clocked from the Dante network. Everything this year was digital and synchronous.”Reviewing the control set-up, he said: “This was the first time we had run a DD32R-FX at FOH and certainly I have never programmed an optical network of such a size. But Optocore is so good it just runs and runs. Once we had synchronised issues such as fibre speed, sampling rate and had assigned IDs to the various devices, everything just fell into place and worked fantastic.”This network architecture has been deployed by Capital Sound on numerous occasions and certainly met the approval of Roger Waters’ sound team.Said Capital general manager, Paul Timmins: “We used existing delay masts where possible for the surround sound to minimise the number of additional Optocore nodes we needed to create but still needed to erect a further nine towers, all of which had to come down at the end of the show.”Account manager Martin Connolly, added: “Roger Waters’ sound team, including sound engineer Jon Lemon, system tech Dean Mizzi and Josh Lloyd, who did the set-up with our system tech Toby Donovan, achieved everything they wanted. All have sent us positive emails thanking us.”TSL Lighting Announces £500,000 Stock Investment as Acquisition of Blinding Light CompletesTSL Lighting has invested more than £500,000 in new rental stock as it announces the completion of its acquisition of corporate and event lighting specialist, Blinding Light. I truly believe that our combined team – made up of well respected, experienced staff who share these values – will be a huge advantage to all of our clients, both existing and new.”Both locations (Gatwick and Basingstoke) continue to operate under their respective individual brands under the overall control of Sam Tamplin. TSL account directors Dom Sheerman and Loz Wilcox will remain in their management roles at Blinding Light, working alongside design directors Anthony Hall and Neil Harvey, and the rest of the Blinding Light team.“Customers of both TSL and Blinding Light are assured that they will retain the same points of contact and will continue to enjoy the same great level of service, quality of equipment and personal relationships,” Sam continues. “My plan for both sites was always about growth and unlocking extra capacity, so we’re delighted to have added extra staff in the office and warehouse at both locations.“The emphasis for both brands remains as it has always been: on providing a personal and individual service, supplying well prepared, quality equipment and ensuring our staff are suitably trained and experienced for every project they work on,” Sam concludes. “It goes without saying that we are focused and committed to supporting and developing these core values as our group continues to grow.”August 2018news8Elation introduces Obsidian Control SystemsElation Professional is embarking on a new chapter in its evolution with launch of Obsidian Control Systems, an accessible line of advanced yet intuitive lighting control products.Following completion in late March of the acquisition of the M-Series range of entertainment lighting controllers from Harman Professional Solutions, Elation received valuable feedback from the thousands of M-Series users worldwide. “Based on this feedback, we sought to create a dedicated company and brand focus for the continued development and evolution of the product series,” states Elation sales and marketing director Eric Loader. “The Obsidian development will continue to be focused on stable and compatible software and hardware for all existing M-Series products.”Obsidian lighting control software and hardware is designed and maintained by lighting professionals so that professionals can excel at the highest level. The Danley MINI 180 provides even, seamless coverage across 180 degrees (by 90 degrees vertical) using Danley’s patented technology. Its operating frequency range is 149Hz to 20kHz with impressively linear phase response across that range and across the beam width. Maximum output is 119dB SPL continuous and 125dB SPL peak.“Folks have been asking us for a 180-degree loudspeaker for a long time, and the Danley MINI 180 meets that specification with sound quality that makes Tom proud to put his name on it,” said Mike Hedden, Danley president. “We made it easy to use: the Danley MINI 180 only weighs 45 pounds and mounts easily on a pole or on a wall. In fact, it’s easy to put two MINI 180s back-to-back on a pole for instant 360 degree coverage with Danley’s phenomenal seamless coupling. There’s no shortage of applications, from houses of worship to sports complexes to farmers markets and beyond. Also, clients can rest easy that overambitious users won’t blow the speaker up. The Danley MINI 180 uses Sentinel Limiter protection circuitry.”The Danley MINI 180 uses two eight-inch drivers and Danley’s patented technology to couple them into a single point source loudspeaker with 180 degree coverage. Polyurea coated 13-ply, 18mm Baltic Birch makes the loudspeaker durable but still light, and its modest size (12.5” x 18.5” x 9.5”) makes the Danley MINI 180 easy to fit into any application.Next >
