Standing only a stone’s throw from its original site on the south bank of London’s river Thames, the new incarnation of Shakespeare’s Globe opened in 1997. In the two decades since, it has seen visitors from around the world pass through its doors, taking part in workshops, lectures, staged readings and, of course, watching the bard’s legendary plays. Recently, Northern Light was contracted to replace its houselight system with LED fixtures.19 Host Makes Most of Ecler Arqis Host consulted directly with Audiologic’s technical specialists over the best way forward. Having listened to the requirements and taken careful account of the site, Audiologic prepared two designs using different brands at different price points and conducted demonstrations of both. Satisfied that they had found exactly what they wanted, the Host team settled on an Ecler solution and Audiologic recommended trusted partner AV Installations to install and commission the new system.20 Some Highlights of New Products shown at LDI 2018 in Las Vegas ETC and High End Systems at LDI with new products in tow Robe Launch T1 Profile “one and only fixture” Doughty launches the Fifty Clamp at LDI City Theatrical Launch Multiverse Wireless DMX System Green-GO creator brings DMX Ethernet Revolution Kinesys at LDI 2018 with Apex Hoist System SGM Light show no mercy at LDI 2018 … and lots more!from the editordirect from: www.etnow.comEntertainment Technology is published 12 times a year in conjunction with the leading industry portal www.etnow.comEditor: John OffordTechnical Editor: Jackie StainesPublished by: Entertainment Technology Press LtdThe Studio, High Green Great ShelfordCambridge CB22 5EGTelephone: +44 (0)1223 550805Fax: +44 (0)1223 550806Website: www.etnow.comemail: editor@etnow.com© Entertainment Technology Press Ltd.Subscription Rates:Annual Subscription for 12 issues (UK): £27.50Annual Subscription (overseas): £50.00Subject to acceptance, subscription is free to UK based industry professionals.Subscribe online at: www.etnow.com/etmag/Opinions expressed in Entertainment Technology are not necessarily those of the publishers. This figure is based on responses from almost 150 theatres, which represents 10% of active theatres in the UK. Collectively they have spent almost £312 million upgrading and maintaining theatre buildings in the past five years. But continued investment is vital for many of these theatres to continue to serve their local communities with 30% of responding theatres stating that the theatre would be at risk of closure if the works are not carried out.The main focus of works is to improve long-term viability as 63% and 64% of respondent theatres said the focus was improving income generation and audience appeal respectively, and 52% said the need was in order to reduce operating costs.Excluding major projects and new builds, these theatres predict they will require an average of £1.15 million in capital works over the next five years. These works will ensure theatres continue to attract audiences and can run more efficiently by ensuring technical equipment and audience facilities are modernised, including improved disabled access and environmental performance. The total amount of investment in theatre buildings needed over the next five years for the UK to meet its cultural and social aspirations is likely to be closer to £1billion, taking into account planned major building projects outside of the theatres who responded. In spite of the challenging economic and funding environment 50% of respondents were either confident or very confident they could raise the funding required for the works, although 24% were unconfident or very unconfident.Theatres Trust director, Jon Morgan (pictured) says: “Theatres make an outstanding contribution to local life, culturally, socially and economically and are often at the heart of town and city-centre regeneration. Theatres of all ages and scales need continued investment to ensure they are fit for purpose and meet modern audience needs. The theatres sector is remarkably resilient and resourceful and much of this investment is focused on generating more revenue and reducing costs so they can develop more robust business models. However, with falling public revenues it can be challenging to raise the capital funds required and we risk losing some of our wonderful network of theatres if funding cannot be found. Support for our theatre infrastructure must be addressed in the UK’s local and national culture, planning and regeneration strategies.”The Theatres TrustThe Theatres Trust is the National Advisory Public Body for Theatres in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1976 by an Act of Parliament to “promote the better protection of theatres for the benefit of the nation”. The Trust has played a leading role in protecting theatre buildings for the duration of its history.www.theatrestrust.org.ukNovember 2018news4LED Creative supporting crew at Roast Battle for Comedy CentralSpecialist illumination company, LED Creative is working with lighting director Stuart Pring on the latest series of hit comedy show Roast Battle.Filmed before a live audience on a custom installed set at the Electric Brixton Theatre, London, Roast Battle features some of the UK’s finest comic performers pitted against each other in a no holds barred verbal assault.Helping create LD Stuart’s look for the show, LED Creative has supplied a selection of its Alpha Soft Wands, including a consignment of built-to-order 500mm units, all controlled using the company’s in-house designed BIT 8-way controllers.Perfectly complementing the installation, which incorporates a range of equipment from Version2 Lights, the Soft Wands provide highly controllable, linear LED accents across the semi-industrial ‘grunge’ set design, a fitting backdrop to the ruthless onstage battle.Supplied as ‘plug and play’ rental units, LC Soft Wands offer a convenient way to build LED versatility into lighting designs. Used individually or in series, the fixtures are well suited to custom installs such as Roast Battle where limited access or restricted fixing points might be an issue. Available in a variety of lengths, the 30mm diameter wands are particularly effective when paired with LC BIT Controllers to allow maximum management over each individual unit.Commenting on the show, LED Creative project manager Tim Rees says: “Stuart really does make clever, creative use of our Soft Wands. Roast Battle has a great look and our wands provide the perfect system for adding bright, controllable, details to the set.”Claypaky for Moscow’s Zaryadye Concert HallMoscow’s beautiful new Zaryadye Concert Hall opened in style in September 2018 with a gala performance by the Russian National Orchestra, attended by dignitaries including President Putin. The modernist, glass structure houses a 1560-seat main auditorium, lit by a house rig of Claypaky fixtures. Claypaky’s Russian distribution partner DOKA was commissioned to provide technical expertise for the project, challenged with specifying a lighting solution befitting a concert hall which promises to dazzle audiences with a vision of a forward-thinking, technologically-advanced Russia. As Putin commented at the opening ceremony, “It represents both [the] historic pride of the nation and its aspiration to create new. Zaryadye Concert Hall is indeed a music complex of the future.”Full story etnow.com Event Newswww.claypaky.it4Issue: 309news5Scott Lehrer immerses Broadway’s Carousel in TiMaxThe 2018 revival of the Rogers and Hammerstein’s classic musical, Carousel, has just completed its run at the Imperial Theatre in New York City with a sound design that earned the show and its Broadway Sound designer – and Tony winner – Scott Lehrer, with associate Alex Neumann, a Tony nomination this year.An immediate hit when it first played in 1945, Carousel had to compete hard in the wake of Oklahoma, the first and very successful collaboration between Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein. Hence it is packed with memorable songs, from “If I Loved You” through “June Is Bustin’ Out All Over”, to the popular yet demanding strains of “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.Lehrer asserts that traditional revivals necessitate a transparent sound system so that the audience can remain unaware of the reinforcement. To achieve this, he made extensive use of TiMax delay-matrix spatialisation, and explains: “It’s part of my toolbox and people hear it and they hear my work as sounding better because of it.”For the audience to hear the full breadth of the 34 actors on the stage, as well as the 26-strong orchestra of solely acoustic instruments, Lehrer created a wide spread of time zones across the stage using TiMax2 SoundHub, to pull as much vocal and orchestral differentiation from the big choral numbers as possible. He reveals: “When there’s a group of people singing, there can be four people singing lead vocals and we can actually time them across the stage from left to right. Also, when the voices are coming from a wider stereo field time-wise rather than volume-wise, it makes it a lot easier to hear four people singing. We’re not piling them up in one position in the centre of the stage.”The TiMax2 Soundhub spatially distributed 40 assorted mic sources from a Yamaha Rivage console onward to a system of flown d&b Y8 line arrays and d&b V7 point source cabinets, with surround content handled by various E Series boxes. It was Lehrer’s first Tony win that led him straight to TiMax and he’s never looked back. “It was so difficult to use certain other generic dsp processors as a dynamically cued delay-matrix that it put me onto TiMax for my next show and I stuck with it. Hence TiMax is now my preference and it contributes to the sonic success of my shows. It’s easy to use and the most straightforward, simple matrix product on the market right now.”photo: Julieta CervantesNovember 2018news6Ayrton appoints Ampco Flashlight Sales exclusive distributor for The NetherlandsAyrton has announced the appointment of Ampco Flashlight Sales as its latest exclusive distributor in its rapidly expanding international sales network. Head Above Water by British designer Steuart Padwick was built and assembled by Unusual Rigging, and is intended as a sign of hope and compassion for all those who have experienced or are dealing with mental health issues and the people who support them. Steuart said: “Head Above Water is a symbol of hope. It needed to be big, powerful and prominent; a beacon of humanity caring for others. This is not my head or about my battles. This is for those who have or have had mental health issues. I want anybody and everybody to relate to it, to open a door perhaps.”Robin Elias, technical director at Unusual explained: “We were approached by Gary White, production manager for this project. We’ve worked with Gary on several jobs over the years, on big events like Sports Personality of the Year. He tasked us with constructing the Head at King George V Lock, pre-assembling it into four sections using 3,000 30mm long screws. Then we craned the four sections onto a barge which made its way up to Gabriel’s Wharf on the South Bank. Here we constructed it, one section at a time, and then, when the structure was complete, the electrics and lighting was installed.”www.unusual.co.ukTECHNICAL STANDARDS FOR PLACES OF ENTERTAINMENTRevised in February 2017 Available now from www.etbooks.co.ukNovember 2018news8CT Welcome back Patrick Dore as Project ManagerPatrick Dore (pictured) has recently returned to Creative Technology’s London team in a project manager role.Pat is very well known to many at CT, having spent the early part of his career with the company, starting in the warehouse preparing video system and then progressing on to do site work and eventually becoming a senior video engineer. The original building dates back to 1871 when the theatre opened. It was reconstructed in 1918 and extensive further restoration and upgrade work was undertaken in 1989 including the installation of a new fly tower, which made it capable of staging far more ambitious productions.Recently, the theatre has invested in Robe moving lights, following a growing trend for theatres not just to look for more flexible and adaptable options, but also to look at LED and other long-term energy saving options that involve greater cost efficiency.Dario Družeta is the venue’s technical director for lighting. He is also a lighting designer and responsible for lighting most of the shows there. He explained that over the last three years they have purchased a number of different Robe fixtures: LEDWash 600s, Actor 6s (a static version of the LEDWash 600) MMX Spots, DL4S Profiles and ParFect 100s, all of which have been delivered by Robe’s Croatian distributor, LAV Studio. The first Robe lights were the LEDWash 600s. They started looking at these because they were well made and reliable, and they had started noticing that other theatres around Europe were using them, as well as Dario having been recommended by other LDs, theatre technicians and technical managers. The purchase was confirmed after an LAV Studio workshop event staged at the venue, and shortly after this Dario was the first person to use LEDWashes in a Croatian theatre show, when he used the Istrian National Theatre’s LEDWash 600s in a production that he lit at the National Theatre in Zagreb.Following that experience, he knew that the Pula venue would really benefit from having them in the house system. The stage is a decent size 20 metres wide by 30 deep, with good headroom of around 20 metres. The theatre is part state part city funded, and it also has to make a working profit, so budgets are tight and they have to make their cap ex investments judiciously each year. The LEDWashes were an immediate hit with everyone working at the venue. Dario enjoyed the luxury of smooth and versatile colour mixing and the beautifully homogenised light source as well as the sheer power of the fixture. These were quickly followed by the Actor 6 purchase. The unit offers all the same colour mixing features in a static format. After that they needed some profiles and wanted to continue with Robe, so MMX Spots were a well-priced choice, and also small enough to be very practical. The ParFects were an all-round solid purchase which are in use on every production and have increased the ongoing commitment to LED lighting technology and reducing the overall carbon footprint. The Istrian National theatre describes itself as a multifunctional space and sometimes stages concerts and other events, and so the Robes are handy for lighting these, and visiting LDs are always impressed when they arrive and see the range of lights available. They have an ETC Ion console for control.“The fixtures are all small, they are well made, reliable and cost-effective to run, so they tick all our boxes,” concluded Dario, adding that he is intending to keep adding to the Robe inventory!photo: Sasa Miljevicwww.robe.czPhilips Strand Launches SPX LED WW profileLDI in Las Vegas saw the launch of the new Philips Strand SPX LED WW, a high-output, warm white LED profile spotlight fixture which offers a powerful, energy efficient alternative to existing models. The SPX LED WW has been designed to meet the requirements of consultants and specifiers looking for quality, efficient and reliable fixtures to serve as straightforward replacements for conventional profile fixtures. Dimmable either via DMX or via a conventional forward phase dimmer, it provides a smooth, stepless fade right down to zero – the perfect dimming credentials for performance lighting. The SPX LED WW uses the latest energy efficient warm white LED light engine to produce an output equivalent to that of a 575W fixture. Its beam is crisp and precise, directing light only where it is intended. Thanks to the SPX filter frame system there is zero light leakage, so no additional masking is required. With reduced fan noise, the SPX LED WW is also quieter in operation than comparable LED fixtures. It uses the same proven, high-precision, high-performance gate and lens sets as the renowned Philips Selecon SPX Profile fixtures, with secure locking shutters, while other lens sets can be used via an adaptor plate. It also employs a Philips Selecon ‘box’-style gel colour holder. DMX connection is via familiar, robust XLR connectors.7news9Issue: 309MA Lighting further success in fight against illegal use of grandMA2 software For quite some time consoles from China have been brought onto the market by a German distribution company. With regard to the key arrangement, these consoles are based on the MA onPC wing devices. In addition, these consoles, if the grandMA2 software is installed, illegally unlock parameters. By preliminary injunction of the Munich Regional Court, the distribution company concerned has now been prohibited from distributing MA Lighting grandMA2 onPC software on devices other than original MA Lighting hardware. The infringer now faces a fine of up to 250,000 euros for each case of a violation of the court ban and up to six months in custody if the amount cannot be raised. In order to avoid further legal disputes, the distribution company concerned has also committed itself to the complete cessation of sales of “Kolibre” devices from the Chinese manufacturer YEL Technology, subject to criminal prosecution. MA has information about Chinese consoles in the country and strongly recommends that companies owning such consoles – regardless of type or Chinese manufacturer – do not use them with grandMA2 onPC software at events. Users and operators should refuse to use such a combination for a show in order not to expose themselves to such liability risks and to make themselves liable to prosecution for an illegal act. The circumvention of technical protective measures of copyrighted software and unauthorised interference with technical protective measures of such software for commercial purposes is punishable by imprisonment of up to three years or a fine. It is not a trivial offence!Allen & Heath SQ Monitor Mixing Upgrade Allen & Heath has unveiled a suite of feature enhancements designed to make its SQ mixers the perfect compact monitor consoles.SQ firmware V1.3 adds a listen bus, enabling the engineer to patch PAFL to an IEM system, stereo nearfield monitors or a mono listen wedge, with the option to control the listen level with the master fader. Engineers can enjoy easy communication between FoH and monitors, thanks to the addition of an external input to PAFL.V1.3 firmware dovetails with the new SLink card, opening up new possibilities for FoH / monitor splits and remote I/O, or combinations of either of these with a ME personal monitoring system. Digital splits are further facilitated by new tie lines, connecting input and output sockets without running through SQ’s processing.“Space for monitor desks is often super-tight, so we’re seeing a lot of SQs in monitor world, where their big functionality and modest footprint have won them many friends,” said SQ product manager, Keith Johnson. “With the generous feedback and support of monitor engineers from the SQ user community, we have ticked off a wish list of new and enhanced features that make SQ the ultimate compact monitor mixer.”SQ V1.3 firmware also adds user permissions, enhancements to the user interface, plus FX control, MIDI messaging and instant value feedback to the soft rotary controls on SQ-6 and SQ-7. The companion V1.3 SQ MixPad app also adds new features, including FX and DEEP unit control, a patching matrix, plus integration with the signal generator and user permissions.Next >
