Since then, a successful period of integration has seen systems and processes aligned to the benefit of both operations. Now, the board appointments signal the beginning of the next phase of growth for the company.Sam Tamplin comments: “We’ve reached the stage where we are a team of more than 60 people. It was time to strengthen the management structure, ready for the next stage of development. Since Blinding Light joined us, we’ve all taken the time to settle in and figure out how we work together, and now the time is right.”He adds: “In building the company, I’ve always looked for people who bring added experience and knowledge, but who also share the same values, commitment to high standards and vision for the future. With Dom and Loz we’ve found exactly that. They’ll be able to help shape the company in the right way in future. And we get on very well together, which is important, making decisions is much more fun.”Wilcox agrees: “The three of us make a really good team. It’s a clear message that we’re in a strong position to move things forward as one company. We’re now expanding into markets which we traditionally haven’t worked in, we’re expanding our rigging offering, investing in new equipment, taking on more resource, more experienced people, and we’ll continue to grow organically in that fashion.”Says Sheerman, “For both Loz and I, it’s great to bring our experience to this management team, with all three of us working towards the same goal. Sam has a very similar vision of the way the company should progress, and the quality and standards it should adhere to - and that’s very refreshing.”TSL and Blinding Light will continue to operate under their respective names and serving their respective customer bases, while benefiting from the added strength of the combined resources, management and processes of the expanded company. All members of the current team remain in place at both locations. In picture: Dom Sheerman, Sam Tamplin and Loz Wilcox.New 3D DWG Libraries release for Milos systemsMilos has announced the release of its latest 3D component libraries for direct use with AutoDesk platforms and other DWG file compatible CAD systems. The library contains over 1,000 new blocks from the vast range of truss systems available from the Milos portfolio. The new edition features quick-snap assembly points as well as pre-assigned component attributes including part codes, system weights, dimensions and accurate bracing patterns for rigging and set construction integration. The venue hosts a variety of music, art and entertainment events, from classical music concerts to comedy. It consists of two concert halls, two art galleries and a handful of event spaces, and is the first new public concert hall to be built in London since the completion of the Barbican.During research, the team at Kings Place read Panasonic case studies of similar event spaces and, impressed with the ease of integration, decided to see the cameras in action for themselves. They chose six Panasonic AW-HE130 cameras for their flexibility and ease of use.Chris Philips, director of technical and ICT for Kings Place said: “We looked to similar venues to see what technology they were using. We read Panasonic case studies for installations at The Barbican and The Royal Academy of Music, and arranged to meet the teams at both venues.”With the varied programme of events at Kings Place, the system installation had to be able to accommodate the venues lighting requirements. Arts events in particular are often quite a bit darker, so investing in a quality camera which can shoot in low light was a must. The HE130 is equipped with three 1/2.86-type MOS sensors, allowing for high-grade filming even in low light conditions.“The nice thing is that when we went to The Barbican and saw how they used the HE130s, it was noticeably different to the Royal Academy of Music. This was really interesting and demonstrated the flexibility of the camera, which was the real deciding factor. Having peers introduce and endorse the technology, was also incredibly powerful,” explained Chris Philips.Dave Wells, recording and broadcast manager for Kings Place, said: “We just kept coming back to the AW-HE130s as they just ticked all of our boxes. They are so discreet and you can put them up anywhere really quickly, making them ready to use within such a short period of time.”4Issue: 310news5Vista 3 by Chroma-Q Shows its Versatility on Stage for Don Broco Tour Lighting designer Ben Inskip is using the new Vista 3 by Chroma-Q lighting and media control system to deliver his dynamic design for fast-rising British rock band, Don Broco’s current international tour. After exploding internationally with the release of latest album, Technology, the group has been touring prolifically for the past year. This has included a sold out date at London’s Alexandra Palace and other headline shows across Europe, festival gigs at Reading & Leeds and the Vans Warped Tour and high-profile support slots on massive arena shows in Europe and the US for Thirty Seconds to Mars and Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park.A Vista user for the past six or so years, Ben has been impressed by the platform’s simple approach to lighting control whilst still enabling programming of complex shows. As well as upgrading his Don Broco core lighting design of really bright and volumetric triangles, Ben has used Vista 3 to adapt his show around the incredibly varied venues and lighting rigs. The tour dates have alternated between doing a festival with full production, to a small club show with a few PARs, to supporting on an arena stage with a much bigger rig.Ben commented: “One of my favourite things about Vista is how easy it is to move between such different environments and still retain a huge amount of programming. Vista’s generic fixture model easily handles large amounts of fixture swapping into my design, without the need for any further time-consuming alterations from myself.”His portable Vista set-up consists of a Vista S1 connected to a high performance PC laptop running the Vista 3 software, with a Vista M1 serving as an extra wing and a Mac laptop as a backup. The full production rig includes triangles of LED battens, moving lights and strobes. Everything is controlled by Vista, including pixel mapping and media content playback.Ben commented: “I chose not to use separate media servers for this design as I could achieve all the looks I wanted in Vista 3. I had a lot of fun programming the LED triangles. Vista’s effects and matrices gave me a huge amount of options and effects to try out, and I could manipulate them very quickly.”Ben is looking forward to using Vista 3 again for Don Broco’s first arena tour of the UK in February, including the biggest headline show of their career at Wembley Arena.Summarising his Vista 3 experience, he commented: “Vista is getting better and better. Although I’ve always loved how graphical it is, using Vista 3’s new command line feature for certain tasks has made my programming even quicker, so now you really have the best of both worlds at your fingertips.”photo: Marcus Maschwitzwww.chroma-q.comTMB Welcomes Tim Obermann TMB has announced the expansion of its European sales operations with the welcome addition of Tim Obermann as European Sales Manager. The tour revisits Bloc Party’s debut album ‘Silent Alarm’, which is being performed in full, as well as fan favourites including ‘Two More Years’ and ‘Flux’ completing the encore. When released in 2005, Silent Alarm was voted ‘Album of the Year’ by NME and nominated for a Mercury prize. It features some of Bloc Party’s biggest hits songs, such as ‘Helicopter’, ‘This Modern Love’ and ‘Banquet’.The set design for the show features five individual cyc panels spaced apart, which together display the iconic ‘Silent Alarm’ album artwork. Ryan Hopkins, LD and director of LCR, knew that the white artwork would be ideal for creative lighting and wanted to wash the backdrop with a rich range of colour. In order to achieve his designs for lighting this blank canvas Ryan opted to use two Chroma-Q Color Force II LED battens at the top and bottom of each panel. For the majority of the show these powerful cyc lights flooded the back of the stage in vibrant colour, with the units’ strobe effects used during some of the faster paced songs. Ryan was also able to create a beautiful sunset effect, with the battens at the top of the panels producing a graduated yellow into deep red wash which was met by an icy blue emitted from the Color Force II fixtures at the bottom.Ryan commented: “It was great to have our Color Force II’s at my disposal for the tour. They provided incredibly bright colour across the stage. I was very impressed by their seamless blending across the entire artwork and I am really happy with the results.”Ryan completed his leg of the tour as LD at Ally Pally, with LCR providing the Color Force II fixtures throughout Europe. The Silent Alarm tour now takes his design further afield with a series of highly anticipated shows across New Zealand and Australia.photo: Lindsay Cavewww.chroma-q.comStage Electrics expands installation divisionStage Electrics has announced that Chris Wells and Mark Willey have joined its busy installation projects department. The latest addition to the Boom Arm range is set to offer users an attractive solution without the need for a brace.Mark Chorley, design engineer at Doughty explained: “Our Boom Arm range is already extremely popular with our customers. The regular Boom Arm works well in most scenarios and has a 25kg safe working load. However the feedback we were getting from customers is that they wanted something that would allow them to hang moving lights in environments where the overall aesthetic is important.”He continued: “Up until now, anyone wanting to hang a moving light would have to use our Braced Boom Arm which is capable of taking a 100kg weight. However, this depends on a brace support which, while effective isn’t necessarily the most attractive solution. We hope that the new Heavy Duty Boom Arm bridges the gap. It has a SWL of 50kg which should more than suffice in the majority of situations while still looking good in its place. The first rigid, rollable powerwall of its kind, Barco RigiFlex combines excellent visual performance with amazingly easy transportation, installation and maintenance. Qualifying as one of the market’s best high-tension surfaces, Barco RigiFlex is an excellent alternative for fixed powerwalls.Rear-projection is the mainstream projection mode in the virtual reality market. However, rigid screens are typically rather compact, smaller than the total required surface. The screen is therefore spliced, and the welding lines impede the visual sense of immersion. Moreover, installing such a screen can be challenging and time-consuming. Depending on the size of the screen, special equipment may be needed to transport and install it.That is the challenge addressed with Barco RigiFlex. This new screen features a flexible surface which can be completely rolled up (so it can be easily brought inside any building), and is available in any size up to 10 x 4 metres/33 x 13 feet. Meanwhile, it has similar quality specifications as the top glass screens, delivering an authentic immersive interaction.Barco RigiFlex uses innovative woven high polymer fabric and is less than 1mm/0.04 inches thick. This makes the product extremely light, as the weight per square metre is only about 0.5kg. Equipped with an aluminium frame, Barco RigiFlex issues extremely high tension on the surface, ensuring toughness and stability. The screen will not vibrate, even when doors are opened or closed, or when there is strong indoor ventilation. It also does not sag after long-term use. Furthermore, it displays images with high resolution, wide viewing angles (with a half gain angle of more than 80 degrees) and unequalled colour saturation, creating an outstanding rear-projection powerwall experience. The flexible nature of Barco RigiFlex facilitates transportation, storage and installation. Compared with traditional rear-projection products, it can be installed in half the time and with less staff. In addition, the projection screen on the frame can be replaced or upgraded to meet new operation requirements.“Barco RigiFlex is a great addition to our virtual reality portfolio,” says Kurt Doornaert, director virtual experience at Barco. “It allows us to install powerwalls in places where competitors need to offer suboptimal solutions (like spliced screens or smaller projection surfaces), giving us an important competitive edge. Combined with our great projectors, including the UDX and XDL series, we can answer the requirements of a very wide range of users.”Next >
