Lighting designer, Louis Oliver, avoided the use of followspots or remote tracking as part of his design intent for the show, choosing instead to work with Ayrton fixtures to provide key lights for the young Canadian singer, and carve out dramatic backdrops with creative back, top and side light.Register forKeep up to date by signing upat www.etnow.com/etexpressWeekly News Headlines18 SFL installs game-changing audio system at Royal Albert Hall The 2019 Olivier Awards marked the official launch of a brand-new audio system at London’s Royal Albert Hall. In doing so this has allowed the company to convert the existing downstairs offices into a dedicated training room. In addition to the new offices, an open space kitchen and dining room for employees to relax and enjoy their break times has been created.Electric Hoist Training is something LTM has always been widely renowned for, but due to lack of space over the past few years it has only been able to offer one to one training in house. It has always been their goal to be able to offer in-house training for a large group again, and the acquisition by GIS AG in June 2018 allowed for funds to be earmarked for the office and training room development. The new large training room, which is 70m2, has had a total revamp and now has space for 16 people to receive in house hoist training. Equipment has also been updated with a new overhead ceiling mounted projector with remote control and a ceiling mounted 90” projector screen. The room features numerous single phase 220V plug-in points throughout the room, as well as a 400V 3 Phase power supply which allows the training managers to demonstrate hoists in operation, making the training interactive and hands-on for the trainees.LTM launched the training room with its first large LoadGuard Motor School at the Bromborough offices on 23rd and 24th April 2019. The course was fully booked well in advance. LTM has various courses scheduled throughout 2019 including both Entertainment LoadGuard Hoist training and GIS Industrial Hoist training courses.www.liftturnmove.co.ukLightpower takes over exclusive Ayrton distribution for GermanyAyrton and Lightpower have announced that, from the 1st July 2019, Lightpower will take over the exclusive distribution of Ayrton in Germany. Louise was a founding judge in 2007 and has since been a tireless advocate for the role of lighting in dance. By contrast, it’s great to be harnessing the fresh perspectives of Tim Bano, joint lead critic for The Stage, to judge musicals and plays, and Neil Fisher, classical music editor of The Times, for the opera award. I look forward to all three joining the returning judges Zoë Anderson, Michael Billington and George Hall for a typically fiercely fought round of discussions.”Levene says: “Even the most bread-and-butter lighting will focus the attention and dramatise the space, but virtuoso lighting is a joy in itself and raises quite ordinary movement to the level of the choreography: directing the eye; changing the mood; spinning straw into gold.”Concert Touring & Events chair Jess Allan has enlisted music business veteran, Ronnie Gurr to help the panel whittle down the submissions to a final shortlist. In his 40 years in the business, Gurr has written for NME and Record Mirror, as well as press for Virgin Records and Sony Music. He now runs Hanging Around Books, an independent publisher specialising in music-related photo books.“I’m delighted to have been invited into the distinguished company of the KOI Awards’ CT&E judging panel,” says Gurr. “It will be a pleasure to join esteemed colleagues in witnessing and honouring the fine work that lighting and video designers create in enhancing and enriching the live experience.”New judges to the Television judging panel, chaired by television lighting designer Stuart include television editor for The Times James Jackson, television critic for The Guardian Lucy Mangan, television critic for FT Weekend Suzi Feay and art director and production designer Fleur Whitlock.“If today’s prestige dramas use lighting to reflect mood and give a classy sensibility, so too must factual and reality shows in their own ways,” explains Jackson. “And as we hit ‘peak-TV’, viewers are not just watching on plasma screens at home, but on tablets and phones while on the go. Suffice to say, good lighting is more important than ever.”Submissions for the Television and Concert Touring & Events category can be made through the Knight of Illumination website, while theatre productions are exclusively nominated and shortlisted by the KOI Theatre judges. The KOI judges watch numerous productions throughout the year and, once submissions have closed on the 30th June, meet to select the final three shortlisted designers and one winner for each award. The winners of the 12th annual KOI Awards will be revealed at the 2019 ceremony and gala dinner at London’s Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith on 15 September.Submissions can still be made through the KOI website until the 30th June 2019: https://knight-of-illumination.com.In picture: New KOI judges clockwise from top left: Neil Fisher, Louise Levene, Tim Bano, Fleur Whitlock, James Jackson, Lucy Mangan, Suzi Feay and Ronnie Gurr.photo: The Fifth EstateArKaos Adds Entedi to UK and Ireland DistributionDigital media specialist and leading provider of real-time visual processing technologies for the entertainment industry, ArKaos, has announced that with immediate effect its dynamic product range will be distributed by and available throughout the UK and Ireland via sales specialist Entedi.Entedi is a technology equipment solutions provider, supplying clients in the stage, concert, theatre, corporate event, production, rental, venues and installations sectors, among many others.Says ArKaos MD Agnes Wojewoda: “We are delighted to be collaborating with Entedi with its dedication to premium products and service. This new piece of kit, which joins the existing Boom Arm range, has been designed in response to customer demand. Mark Chorley, design engineer at Doughty explained: “The new Scaff Boom Arm is very much a ‘get out of jail’ item that we see as being an essential part of any took-kit. It will allow the user to make their own boom arm out of materials that they have to hand, in the event that they find themselves on site and suddenly needing a boom arm of a certain length.”The Scaff Boom Arm will take 48mm aluminium barrel or scaff tube which can be cut to size depending on the requirements of the particular project. While Doughty is unable to quote a safe working load for the product, each piece of kit will come with a chart, which is also available in Doughty’s Little Blue Book catalogue and on the company’s website. Mark continued: “Because we cannot predict how the user will fashion their boom arm, we have tested several different tubes of different sizes and suggested a SWL. Of course if our customers have any questions, they can get in touch any time. We encourage people to come and see this new item for themselves on our stand and decide for themselves if this is a piece of kit that will make their working lives easier.”Doughty also showcased the new Fifty Clamp on the stand. The bigger brother of Doughty’s best-selling Twenty Clamp, the Fifty Clamp has been designed to take an additional 30kg. It has TUV approval, a SWL of 50kg and has been designed to fit tube diameter 38mm – 51mm. It is made from pressure die cast aluminium which prevents damage to thin wall truss. It is captive with M10 or M12 bolts and comes supplied with an M10 fixing kit. Mark continued: “Initial reception to the Fifty Clamp is proving to be very positive. That extra 30kg makes a big difference; our customers have told us it’s a bit of a game changer. The Fifty Clamp is available for order so we look forward to gathering additional feedback as uptake increases.”As well as the two new products, Doughty also showed its Space Saver Omega which is in stock and ready for shipping, as well as a wide range of its other kit. Julian Chiverton, sales director said: “We always look forward to PLASA Focus – it’s as much a chance to show off our new products as it is to network with customers, some of whom we know and others who are new faces. It’s the perfect show to spend time really getting to know what our customers want and whether we’re giving them what they want.”www.doughty-engineering.co.ukClaypaky goes for direct sales in the United KingdomClaypaky has announced that, with immediate effect, it will directly handle the distribution of its products in the UK market.Pio Nahum, CEO of Claypaky, says: “The stage lighting market is changing rapidly and we decided that, in an influential market such as the UK, a direct relationship with customers and lighting designers that make use of our products has become indispensable.”“In the increasingly competitive scenario in which we operate, our totally renewed range of products, deserves an un-compromised dedication that only the direct presence can guarantee,” Alberico D’Amato, international sales director, states. The direct contacts with customers will be managed by Emilio Cornelli, a face already known to many, who returns as UK regional manager. “Our mission is to ensure that all customers have access to our cutting-edge products”, Cornelli says, “and that they enjoy the best return on their investment through competitive purchase options and the highest functionality of their equipment.”Claypaky say that they wish to thank UK distribution company Ambersphere for the work done in the past years; the collaboration between the two companies will continue for the after-sales technical support for all the equipment that Ambersphere has supplied.www.claypaky.comNext >
