Sweden based Priebe-ScanRig AB (PSRIG) was appointed to deliver and fit two large truss constructions with associated suspension. Aart Gigengack, sales manager and co-owner of PSRIG specified the use of Broadweigh load cells and Handheld Advanced to the project, both vital to making sure that there were no overloads on the lifting points of the truss structure. 19 ETP Catalogue Entertainment Technology Press Book Catalogue27 All Change at the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, University of Sussex Audience Systems’ innovative solution for the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts allows the venue to quickly transform its floor from flat to tiered, with minimal strain to the crew.12 Achieving the Ideal Beam Field with the Touch of a Button Believing in the importance of providing designers with the fixture choices that will truly impact their designs, Josef Valchar, CEO and co-founder of Robe Lighting, worked with the Robe optical design engineers and created an innovative Hot-Spot Lens System for the ESPRITE and T1 Series of LED profiles. By being able to broadcast their sound through a premier touring PA, on a Dante backbone, will have taken the 12 bands competing in the final into new territory. The two High Wycombe-based manufacturers concerned were Martin Audio, and Focusrite Pro, both now under the umbrella of parent company, Focusrite plc.15 Brilliant light for the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonie As is frequent practice in cultural buildings, conventional 120V / 250W light bulbs with E27 thread were used in the Philharmonie Berlin Chamber Music Hall. However, due to new EU energy directives this type of bulb is no longer produced, and as the Philharmonie’s supplies were becoming scarce an alternative had to be found. Upon winning the contract ASC involved Anke Schierenbeck from VisionTwo, the Berlin IBM planning office and the manufacturer GDS in the job of developing various light simulations for the 50 lights which were awaiting replacement. After sampling had been successfully completed, the ArcSystem Pro One-Cell High Output type with 108W, 8,000lm, a constant colour temperature of 3,000K and D1HO DMX RDM driver was identified as the equipment of choice. from the editordirect from: www.etnow.comEntertainment Technology is published 12 times a year in conjunction with the leading industry portal www.etnow.comEditor: John OffordTechnical Editor: Jackie StainesPublished by: Entertainment Technology Press LtdThe Studio, High Green Great ShelfordCambridge CB22 5EGTelephone: +44 (0)1223 550805Fax: +44 (0)1223 550806Website: www.etnow.comemail: editor@etnow.com© Entertainment Technology Press Ltd.Subscription Rates:Annual Subscription for 12 issues (UK): £27.50Annual Subscription (overseas): £50.00Subject to acceptance, subscription is free to UK based industry professionals.Subscribe online at: www.etnow.com/etmag/Opinions expressed in Entertainment Technology are not necessarily those of the publishers. Those who attended will have noticed a few changes. As a result of the developments in 2019, the interest shown in the 2020 show was more than we have seen in recent years. The exhibition floor was fully booked for June and we were ‘ready to go’. … and then everything changed. This shutdown is unprecedented, as will be the process of rebuilding the industry. One of the defining values of our industry is the ‘can do’ attitude that always delivers the show. This characteristic is the key to rebuilding a future for everyone.Looking back to January 26th this year, we started to work on the main theme of the ABTT Theatre Show for June 2020. It was Re: as in review, rethink and reimagine. The key driver was to address our climate issues with genuine action.Little did we know that two months later the brakes would be well and truly applied and that the concept of Re: would climb to the top of everybody’s agenda – but for a totally different reason. The shutdown of the entertainment industry has forced us all to consider how we are going cope now and how we will survive these desperate times to enable us to rebuild when we eventually reopen.Whilst the 42nd outing of The ABTT Theatre Show at Alexandra Palace has now been postponed to June 2021, plans are underway for constant and ongoing behind the scenes support with the hope of a collaborative coming together when the time is right. We know we are not alone and the ABTT will work tirelessly to unite our entire technical community with as many live performance disciplines as possible to consider how to rebuild, how best to create new opportunities and how to play our part in getting theatre back on its feet.In closing, let’s be thankful for what we have and bless those who are less fortunate than us. Stay safe, stay well and let’s look forward to rebuilding together. With much hope for a brighter future,Isobel Hatton, Show DirectorMay 2020news42020 Knight of Illumination Awards postponedThe Knight of Illumination (KOI) executive committee has come to the decision to postpone the 13th annual awards ceremony and gala dinner due to the ongoing Coronavirus crisis and the enormous implications it is having on the entertainment industry.A statement from co-founders Durham and Jennie Marenghi on behalf of the KOI committee reads: “The Knight of Illumination committee has taken the considered decision that this year’s KOI Awards ceremony will not be held on 6 September as planned due to the uncertainty of the times in which we now live. The event will be held as a celebration of our industry and to bring people together, once the current situation has been resolved and it is safe to do so.“Meanwhile, we will continue to appraise the work already submitted and we ask designers to please continue to nominate via the KOI website. We are all watching more TV than usual, so please submit anything outstanding that catches your eye, and to those concert and events lighting designers and video content creators now stuck at home, we invite you to submit your finest work this year before the closing date of 30 June 2020 and if you have videos/photos to review.“Further announcements on the Awards ceremony will follow in the coming months as the situation hopefully improves. Stay safe and we will come together once more as Knights of Illumination once this worldwide battle has been fought and won.”KOI has been a connected hub for the entertainment technology industry for more than a decade, bringing the community together to celebrate the achievements of lighting and video designers across the sectors of television, theatre, and concert and events, and it plans to remain as such throughout the course of this year and beyond.Given the large number of productions postponed and cancelled over the upcoming months and the impact that is having on the industry, the committee feels it would be unwise for KOI to choose to proceed with a conventional KOI ceremony. The ceremony revolves entirely around our community of creative individuals, and also relies on sponsorship from businesses, and both groups are already being and will continue to be drastically affected by this unprecedented situation.Though the ceremony will not take place in the traditional sense, KOI aims to continue to celebrate the achievements and raise the profile of the creatives in the industry, and to this end, it will endeavour to host an alternative event at a later date.Submissions can be made through the KOI website. www.knight-of-illumination.comNorth American Theatre Engineering and Architecture Conference PostponedThe continuing COVID-19 crisis, and the time needed to recover from it, make it unimaginable to hold NATEAC this coming summer. In order to provide a safe environment in which to meet and ensure a worthwhile and exciting experience for the presenters and attendees, NATEAC will be postponed for one year.NATEAC will be held at the Roosevelt Hotel, NYC on 18 and 19 July, 2021.NATEAC hopes to bring many of the excellent presentations that were set for this July forward to 2021. However, the current crisis, and our response to it, may alter what is considered important next summer.NATEAC also hopes to keep the Harbor Cruise, Conference Dinner and Cocktail Party on the same schedule and in the same location as before. ArcSystem Navis is a line of LED luminaires featuring pristine light as well as a modular design for smooth installations. For centralised LED power controls, F-Drive is a new system offering an intuitive design with customisable output cards. Together, Navis and F-Drive make one adaptable and robust LED system for any space. The Navis line of luminaires prioritises ease of installation, hassle-free maintenance, in-field customisation, and beautiful light with high-grade TIR optics and stepless dimming. The fixtures are available in multiple colour temperature options ranging from 2700K to 5000K as well as an RGBW colour-mixing option. A 3000K fade to warm variant is also available providing an intimate, warm light at lower intensity levels, often preferred in hospitality environments. In the field, aesthetic changes can be made in seconds with various magnetic trim plates, clip-in optical accessories, and twist-and-click beam angle lenses. The recessed Navis 100 offers a small form factor at only 100mm high with three wind-down clamps catering to ceiling thicknesses from 0.5 to 20mm. Any Navis 100 can be transformed into a surface cylinder or pendant solution by sliding it into the purpose-designed hardware accessories. In addition, an optional wall wash accessory is available, instantly transforming the Navis 100 into a luminaire capable of providing a smooth blanket of light for a wall or corridor application. The F-Drive LED power control solution is optimised for seamless use with ArcSystem Navis luminaires, as well as third-party fixture applications. F-Drive provides an accessible hub for all the critical components controlling an LED system utilising familiar category type cable with RJ45 connections. Depending on a facility’s needs, the F-Drive family includes both an R12 rack-mount option and a W1 wall-mount option. The R12 option features 12 slots for swappable output cards with four channels of power output each. A busy and dynamic schedule includes 42 Zoom training sessions each month which will run for as long as the crisis lasts. Zero 88 product manager Jon Hole commented: “With the whole live music, events and performance industry shut down, we want to be as positive, forward-thinking and helpful as we can to anyone who is already using or keen to know more about some of the core Zero 88 products.”The Zero 88 Home Page https://zero88.com/ has full details of what’s available and interested parties can sign up on the spot! The 42 Zoom training sessions are divided into ten categories, which are scheduled to be repeated over the monthly period, offering different time slots and also ensuring that those in different time zones can join in and share the knowledge exchange and fun! Sessions last between one and three hours and will cover a wide range of topics related to Zero’s award-winning FLX and FLX S series of lighting consoles. The topic categories start from entry-level which are designed to get users up-and-running with an FLX-S desk including patching and basic programming, moving on to more intermediate elements like programming cues into playbacks, cue settings, editing, etc.The more advanced will explore sophisticated functions like Tracking, DMX / RDM and Ethernet Networking. The tracking session explores the theory and the jargon which is explained using everyday terminology. It can be seen in action and participants can learn how it can be a very powerful tool for any production. The DMX / RDM session includes key terminology, common questions like ensuring RDM doesn’t cause lights to flicker and investigates how RDM can save hours of work. Ethernet Networking will examine Ethernet protocols (including sACN, RDMnet, LLRP and Art-Net) which are introduced, reviewed and objectively compared, and there’ll also be an insight of all the “free extra features” with Ethernet. These advanced sessions are also applicable to most other lighting consoles as well as a key to understanding the full power and potential of the FLX series. All sessions will be action-packed with handy hacks and practical tips for speeding up programming time in relation to some of the console’s settings and defaults. In addition to the Zoom sessions – presented by Edward Smith, Tyler Holpin and Jon Hole – one-to-one consultations are also available with Zero 88’s fantastic technical support team who will call by request on a convenient number at the best time.Plus, there is also a wealth of other tuition available to watch on Zero 88’s YouTube channel including FLX and FLX S console training, and series of cool 44-second ‘video snaps’ aimed at “Simplifying Jargon” where some of the most commonly used verbiage in lighting programming is demystified and explained simply with the assistance of clear voiceovers and graphics. On top of all these options, Zero 88’s Forum is a vibrant space for end-users to engage, chat and support each other, together with valuable up-to-the-minute input from the Zero 88 team.Jon and the technical Team – Tyler Holpin, Edward Smith, Keith Rogers and Nathanael Orr – are then offering complete bespoke training sessions tailored to specific groups (e.g. venues, rental companies, students, universities etc.) and their particular requirements. The new weather-ready profile luminaire is available in both a full colour version featuring RGBALC colour mixing, as well as a higher output white version. The Leko LED Outdoor is part of a full range of theatrical luminaires announced by Strand.“The Leko LED Outdoor Profile is a modern successor to the iconic Strand Leko, but in a sturdy IP65 housing built to withstand the elements,” explains Martin Palmer, senior product manager, Vari-Lite and Strand Luminaires at Signify. “Designed to take the performance outside no matter the weather, the fixture strikes the ideal balance of colour quality and output, making it perfect for a variety of outdoor performance and architainment applications.”Like the standard Leko LED Profile fixture that was also announced, the full colour version of the new Leko Outdoor Profile uses the RGBALC (red, green, blue, amber, lime and cyan) colour mixing system first seen on the recently announced Vari-Lite VL5LED WASH. With the addition of the innovative SmartColor Control system, designers can use RGBALC colour mixing to achieve the deep colours they would normally obtain with gels, all while using traditional CYM + CTO controls. To complement the full colour version, a high output cold white (5600K) version of the Leko Outdoor Profile is also available. This white-only version is optimised to give even greater power for long distance projection applications. To simplify the use of the Leko Outdoor in permanent outside installations, the profile includes an on-board motorised zoom and focus. The zoom has a range of 18° to 30°, and the zoom and focus can be adjusted both manually or via DMX. The Leko LED Outdoor also includes a four-shutter framing system, and an optional rotating/indexable gobo rotator is available as well.“The Leko LED Outdoor Profile has been designed carefully with the unique challenges of outdoor applications in mind,” adds Palmer. “We worked hand-in-hand with designers in these markets and are offering a fixture that specifically meets their needs, rather than simply placing our Leko LED fixture in an IP-rated housing. We are excited by the feedback we’ve received from these designers, and we look forward to the innovative lighting designs we are sure will come using the new Leko Outdoor Profile.”Introducing Durham’s DigestLighting designer Durham Marenghi’s wife Jennie suggested that while he, like many of us, is stuck in the house at this time he should put pen to paper and record some of the rather curious and hopefully amusing experiences that he has witnessed across his forty years of lighting design. So, get yourself a cup of tea (or something stronger) and enjoy this little distraction by scrolling down the front page of etnow.com and clicking on the Durham’s Digest button.TAIT offers Free Online Training Series for Introduction to iQ Powered by Navigator TAIT is now offering free online training courses for iQ Powered by NAVIGATOR to the live event community. Now, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Yamaha Pro Audio, the company has launched the special edition HS MP (Matched Pair) models.Yamaha Pro Audio has a history of innovation that goes back to 1969. Ever since the launch of the VA120 vocal amp system, the company has continually expanded its pro audio offerings, including generations of class-leading mixing consoles, power amplifiers, speakers and signal processors. Many of these have become industry standard equipment for many applications, from broadcast studios to world class live events and a wide range of commercial spaces. The new, special edition HS MP powered monitors include three models: HS5 MP, HS7 MP and HS8 MP. Each pair of monitors has been manufactured using a unique process, utilising specially selected parts and with matching serial numbers, shipping in a special paired carton with an MP (Matched Pair) label. The HS MP monitors continue the same rigorous design principles that have guided Yamaha designs ever since the legendary NS10M STUDIO monitors, first produced in 1977. Essentially defining the look and sound preferred by engineers in studios around the globe, they were followed in 1998 by the MSP5 powered studio monitor. This expanded Yamaha’s range into more critical listening environments, where even more faithful reproduction of the original sound was required. In the 2000s, the MSP/MSP Studio Series harnessed Yamaha’s latest technical advances to meet the ever-evolving needs of customers, delivering the exceptional sonic accuracy of a range that continues as a flagship product to this day.In 2005, as bit and sampling rates rose, there was an increasing need for even higher quality nearfield monitors. The HS Series delivered the latest fidelity of sound and accuracy, updated in 2013 with the next-generation version. Even more sonically accurate, this range was also offered as the HS-I version, equipped with rigging points and the ability to use speaker brackets for convenient wall, ceiling or baton mounting. The special edition HS MP monitors are an appropriate way of marking the 50th anniversary of Yamaha’s Pro Audio division, featuring the extra fine details that will help to ensure the optimal delivery of your next project. The new fixtures bring a wide range of rich, easily controllable colour options to footlight, graze, and cyclorama applications, and are part of a full range of theatrical luminaires announced today by Strand targeting theatres, houses of worship, TV and film studios, and other performance spaces. The new Strand Coda cyc fixture and Aurora strip luminaires merge modern lighting technology with the colour depth and control simplicity of traditional incandescent luminaires. The full colour fixtures use an RGBALC (red, green, blue, amber, lime and cyan) colour mixing system for a wide mixable colour spectrum, but thanks to the innovative SmartColor Control system, the luminaires can be easily controlled with traditional CYM + CTO controls.“While built-in colour mixing provides more flexibility than traditional gels, the programming of these fixtures has grown increasingly complex, as wider colour spectrums make control extremely DMX channel heavy,” explains Martin Palmer, senior product manager, Vari-Lite and Strand luminaires at Signify. “The new SmartColor Control system allows designers to use more flexible LED colour mixing engines to achieve the same deep colours they were able to obtain with gels, but without making it harder to program their production.”The Strand Aurora LED Strip is available in both a 4-cell and 12-cell version. With pixel control of each cell, it’s easy to create split colours or gradients, making it perfect for applications of any size, from graze or cyc lighting to set piece illumination, foot lighting, and more. The new Coda LED Cyc also supports natural split colours with built-in two-zone control. Both fixtures have a fanless design, making them ideal for quiet environments. For television applications, the new luminaires also offer camera-ready features such as adjustable frequency to exceed camera frame rates and green-magenta colour shift for colour correction.“The Coda LED and Aurora LED fixtures are excellent additions to the new Strand theatrical luminaire series,” says Fernand Pereira, global head of marketing and product management, Vari-Lite and Strand at Signify. “With beautiful colours and powerful features targeting applications such as theatre and television, these new fixtures demonstrate the innovation and quality of light that has made Strand beloved by lighting designers for generations.”Next >
