Jonathan explained: “We’ve been working with Global Street Art to light up their amazing advertising artwork for a fair few years now and we rely on Doughty to help us secure the lighting effectively. I have known of their products for my entire professional life and was keen to make sure their kit was used on this project so I brought Rigging Services on board who handle the specialised side of fixing the relevant products in place. Initially I approached a couple of companies who said that the plans we had could not be achieved and then I approached Rigging Services who were willing and able to fulfil the brief, so we’ve been working together on projects around London for the past five years.”Using a selection of off-the-shelf Doughty kit including brackets (which are secured by the Rigging Services team and then tested to 100kg) and scaff bars, the lights are then secured in place. “If Global Street Art is using UV paints, we use UV lights. If not, we have flood lights which are just as effective at lighting up the art but essentially the rigging kit remains the same. With the lights having to stay in place for anywhere between two and six weeks depending on the project, Jonathan says its vital that the kit is robust enough to withstand both the weight of the lights and the unpredictability of the elements. “In a year that has seen the entire live events supply chain knocked sideways, we appreciate having reputable companies like Doughty on hand to supply high quality goods and advice more than ever. There is no point in promising a client their desired outcome if you cannot deliver. The Doughty range ensures there is always a solution and I feel confident, undertaking a bespoke project, that there will always be something in Doughty’s Little Blue Book that will fit the needs of the job.”www.doughty-engineering.co.ukVSS makes major LED screen investment in 2020Video Screen Services (VSS), the specialist supplier of high-performance LED screen systems for film, television and events, has announced that it has invested more than £12 million in new LED screen product in 2020, as part of its commitment to meet the requirements of clients at the cutting edge of film and television production. To service the rapidly growing demand for LED screen technology, spearheaded by the latest techniques in production, the company has purchased large volumes of high-resolution screen from industry-leading technology partners. The RE20-BLACK offers customers an aesthetic alternative to the iconic original finish, while being acoustically, electrically and mechanically identical.Beyond providing the industry-standard sound of FM radio voices, the RE20’s popularity has surged in recent years with the rapid growth of podcasting and home recording/production. It also remains a trusted tool in professional recording studios, and a mainstay mic on live-performance stages everywhere.A key to the RE20’s enduring popularity is its unique Variable-D design. Variable-D minimises proximity effect, giving users the confidence that their tone will remain full, pure and accurate while they enjoy the freedom to work naturally around the mic at varying distances. Additional features include a mid-bass tone-shaping switch, a substantial integrated pop filter and a humbucking coil to guard against line hum, all of which combine to provide a supremely smooth, natural and controlled sonic character. The classic RE20 finish will continue to be available under the current RE20 model name.Small dLive, Big Ideas for Denmark’s Royal TheatreDet Kongelige Teater (The Royal Theatre) in Copenhagen recently invested in a compact dLive Wings system to add flexibility in its newly repurposed A-Salen contemporary dance space.Formerly a rehearsal area, the theatre’s A-Salen is a true black box space, giving ample reconfiguration options for a wide variety of dance performances. In-house audio engineer and sound designer, Jonas Jensen set out to find a mixing system that could keep up with the versatility of the space itself. The greatest challenge was that the mix position would often need to share an intimate 3m2 footprint with the lighting desk, so a typical 36-fader, full-format console was never on the shopping list.Following a recommendation from colleague, Sebastian Eskildsen, Jonas opted for a 19” Allen & Heath dLive C1500 surface with 12 faders over six layers, paired with a CDM32 MixRack. An IP8 remote controller gives Jonas an extra six layers of eight faders, bringing the total number of available fader strips to 120. A Dante 128 x 128 card in the C1500 completes the set-up, integrating the dLive system with the theatre’s comprehensive Dante network.“I often run quite complex speaker layouts, like multiple surround set-ups, or immersive systems, and I do most speaker distribution within the console,” Jonas explains. “So I need a lot of busses with delays and filters. The versatility in the ways you can set up the dLive system makes it a great hub, and as we range from small Ableton-focused surround-installations to full on rock bands playing, I really appreciate the effortless configuring, routing and set-up.” Specific features which are already getting heavy use include dLive’s DCA spills, Dyn8’s dynamic EQ functionality and easy virtual soundcheck functions. When not in use in A-Salen, the dLive system has already been earmarked for monitor duties for larger performances, and for use on touring shows. All elements of the set-up were supplied by Allen & Heath’s Danish distributor, Lightpartner.Showtec lights up the sky as a beacon of hope at Salisbury CathedralSalisbury Cathedral illuminates the sky as a symbol of hope during this pandemic year. For the project Light of Hope, which is initiated by artist Peter Walker, the participating cathedrals illuminate the sky with beams of light as a symbol of hope during All Saints and All Souls Days. The project is supported by the Arts Council England and includes an arts project for school children which they can join and create their own Light of Hope artwork. The AML group, which works closely with the freelance community in Salisbury, was asked by Salisbury Cathedral to offer a design solution for the lighting. AML Group’s technical director Tom Sneddon made the design and used four Showtec Polar 300 Hybrid fixtures to light up the sky at Salisbury Cathedral. The Showtec Polar fixtures are hoisted 50 metres up in the air and are positioned to illuminate the cross on the tallest spire of England. The result looks truly magnificent! Directors Ed Railton and Matthew Mountier, both with long-standing freelance careers in theatre touring and television lighting respectively, purchased ten MDG ATMOSPHERE haze generators at the outset and are still using the same machines 13 years later.“We both had extensive experience of MDG through our freelance careers and knew them to be the best,” says Railton. “We liked the level of control, the fineness of the haze and the smooth, even dispersion the ATMOSPHERE gives; it’s so fine you can’t see the haze until light is passed through it.”Limelite Lighting’s initial engagements were with theatres and small television studios, but the bulk of its work today is in television, with the majority in outside broadcast and many sub hires to larger TV and film rental companies.“Over the years we have seen a change from DOPs’ traditional requests for cracked oil hazers to the cleaner option of MDG ATMOSPHERE haze generators which have become the lighting directors’ hazer of choice,” says Railton. “The ATMOSPHEREs leave very little residue on lenses, gobos and accessories.” This has proved an important factor for cameramen, and for maintenance technicians who spend less time cleaning moving lights and cameras post-show.“MDG has all the flexibility, control and reliability we need as a rental house,” continues Railton. “Every job is different: studios work within limits and are 100 per cent controllable, but outside broadcast is more complex, wholly reliant on the weather, and changes by the minute. A DOP can call on you at any point with just a ten minute window in the weather. But we can take advantage of the ATMOSPHERE’s 100 per cent duty cycle and use the DMX controller to respond instantly to whatever is needed.”All Limelite’s ATMOSPHERE generators are housed in bespoke flightcases with spare gas and fluid bottles as complete, transportable units for quick deployment wherever required. The company offers a choice of DMX and manual control generators to suit client needs. Recent productions employing MDG ATMOSPHERE include MTV’s Just Tattoo of Us and Simon Amstell’s latest DVD Benjamin.“From a hire company’s perspective, our MDG ATMOSPHEREs have proved a good long-term investment,” concludes Railton. “The generators are never out of action so we need something reliable and strong, and easy and quick to maintain. Ours have been solid as a rock, the parts are readily available and they are very economical on fluid. Clients know what they are getting and like what they get.”Limelite Lighting continued to film during lockdown No 1 with The Ranganation and Mo Gillingan’s All Star Happy Hour, while lockdown No 2 saw them busy with a new series of SAS Who Dares Wins, The Great British Sewing Bee and preparations for some of the pantomimes that are still lined up over Christmas.Next >
