Issue: 377 ABTT and BAPAM launch first-of-its-kind guidance on physical health for backstage staff in theatre The Association of British Theatre Technicians (ABTT) and British Association for Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM) announced the launch of a first-of-its-kind resource dedicated to fostering good physical health for backstage practitioners in the theatre sector. The initiative champions healthy practices for backstage workers in the theatre and live production sector, where over 70% of the workforce identify as freelance workers [according to ABTT Guidance Note W1 Mental Health & Well-being]. The two organisations, which have been collaborating since 2018, launched an infographic at the ABTT Theatre Show in London on 6th June, a specialist trade show connecting manufacturers, suppliers and service providers to the technical and production disciplines with a huge range of practitioners. Drawing on the ABTT’s deep understanding of the sector and BAPAM’s clinical expertise in health and wellbeing, the infographic uses the mnemonic S.T.A.G.E. C.R.E.W. Each letter highlights key actions workers can take to maintain physical health and well-being and minimise the risk of injury or chronic conditions: Sleep, Training and Technique, Appetite and Diet, Good Hygiene, Environment (risk assessments), Clinical Support, Rest and Recovery, Exercise and Warm Up. The resource will provide a greater level of support to backstage practitioners who, like performers, can face tiring and tough working conditions and experience a heightened risk of injury or occupational ill-health. Factors such as long hours, intense work with limited breaks, handling heavy equipment and separation from friends and family are commonplace challenges for lighting, sound, stage, flying, AV and automation technicians, amongst others. In addition to the infographic, a comprehensive Physical Wellbeing Guidance Note and accompanying videos addressing each element of the S.T.A.G.E. C.R.E.W. mnemonic will be released in the coming months. Real-life case studies will be integrated to illustrate prevalent issues encountered by backstage workers. Guidance will offer insights on how managers can assist team members in prioritising their health and provide a healthy practice self-assessment tool to empower workers to evaluate their health and pinpoint areas requiring attention. These resources, founded on evidence-based practices, will be added to the Code of Practice for the Theatre Industry and made available free of charge to theatre venues and on the ABTT website, ensuring accessibility for all and helping employers to meet their welfare obligations under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. Claire Cordeaux, CEO, BAPAM, said: “As the largest provider of clinical services to the UK’s performing arts sector and with over 40 years of experience working with performers and backstage professionals, we are proud to announce this latest partnership with our friends at the ABTT. The launch of this first-of-its-kind guidance on physical health for live performances production staff marks a significant milestone for the emerging specialism of performance arts medicine in theatre. We recognise that a vibrant and healthy workforce is crucial for the future of the performing arts and this initiative acknowledges the vital role played by those working in the backstage disciplines in bringing live performances to fruition.” Robin Townley, CEO, ABTT, added: “The ABTT and BAPAM have enjoyed working closely together to support the wellbeing of the theatre workforce since 2018. We are aligned in our principles and share common goals aimed at promoting healthy practices for the benefit of backstage workers and the industry as a whole. With the Health and Safety at Work Act mandating employers to safeguard the health, safety and welfare of employees, collaborative initiatives such as the infographic and the Physical Wellbeing Guidance Note will serve as valuable tools in disseminating advice and advocating for the establishment of standards that enhance the wellbeing of production staff in the entertainment industry.” The Physical Wellbeing Guidance Note will be integrated into the ABTT Welfare Guidance Notes section of the ABTT website and referenced in the Technical Standards for Places of Entertainment, published by ET Press.July 2024 news 4 Absen Europe Opens First UK Showroom World leading LED display brand, Absen, has announced the grand opening of its first UK showroom, in Theale, Berkshire. Allen & Heath dLive V2.0 Update Where FX and Workflow Innovation Sets the Scene Allen & Heath has announced the release of dLive firmware V2.0 and the new RackUltraFX card, bringing next-generation effects processing and extensive workflow enhancements to the renowned mixing platform. “dLive V2.0 ushers in a new era of integrated creative FX and advanced workflow features, completely redefining what is possible in the mixer,” says Jack Hughes, head of marketing at Allen & Heath. “Four years in the making, this exciting update gives engineers the tools to supercharge their workflow and improve the mixing experience in every live sound environment.” Leading the workflow improvements is an overhauled cue list system, simplifying cue list creation with manual and auto renumbering options plus custom MIDI recall, designed for fast-moving performances, heavily automated shows and theatre applications. The powerful new Actions feature makes complex automation easy, enabling functions across multiple channels, such as routing assignments and levels, ABCD inputs, processing and insert in/outs and strip layout to be triggered via a single SoftKey press. The Channel Library has been extended to include mix contributions, meaning channels can now be saved with all sends, processing and name/colour data included. The new RackUltra FX card, fitted as standard to all new MixRacks and available as an upgrade for existing MixRacks, adds eight RackUltra FX engines – including dedicated stereo send and return channels plus PEQ and dynamic processing – to any dLive system without consuming any inputs, busses or FX slots. “The unprecedented power delivered by the RackUltra FX card’s combination of a custom FPGA FX core with ARM processing has allowed us to push the envelope with our new algorithms,” says Anthony Evans, R&D software manager at Allen & Heath. “We can now deploy integrated, low-latency effects that were previously unimaginable in a live console, opening up dLive to the next generation of onboard processing.” The RackUltra FX collection, powered by the RackUltra FX card, brings together ten new algorithms that rival the most advanced plug-ins on the market, with the added benefit of seamless low-latency integration and no licensing. For the first time on a professional live console, studio quality pitch correction, shifting and gridding can be achieved with no external hardware or third- party software. Vocal Tuner is designed for natural sounding pitch correction where the performer may need a gentle helping hand. Vocal Gridder produces faster, less natural-sounding pitch correction where notes ‘snap’ to pitch almost instantly. Vocal Shifter radically alters vocals with formant and pitch shifting for doubling, widening and unreal robotic and ageing effects. dLive’s vocal processing is further enhanced by the addition of three ultra-realistic harmonisers. Quad Voice Harmoniser generates up to four voices of natural-sounding vocal harmony. Dual Voice Auto Key Harmoniser adds up to two voices of harmony with intelligent Auto-Key mode which can determine the key of the performance in real-time. MIDI Harmoniser creates harmonies based on an external MIDI input. Two new reverbs utilise the full power of the RackUltra FX card to bring previously unthinkable realism to in-console reverberation. Spaces Reverb Designer is an algorithmic reverb dedicated to recreating physical spaces with the stunning realism usually associated with high-end hardware units. Plate Reverb Designer is dedicated to replicating the characterful build-up and tail of a plate reverb, with the choice of several plate materials. A pair of distortion effects complete the V2.0 RackUltra FX collection. Saturator (pictured) delivers five analogue saturation models, covering everything from smooth and subtle tape drive to germanium and valve crunch. Amp+Cab distortion models the harmonically complex characteristics of guitar and bass amplifiers and emulates various classic speaker cabinets. “This update further cements dLive’s reputation as the go-to mixer for flexibility, sound quality, and onboard processing tools,” adds Jack Kenyon, product specialist at Allen & Heath. “We can’t wait for users to explore these new features, designed to inspire creativity and streamline the mixing process while improving the experience for engineers, artists and audiences alike.”pure emotion In the wash light category there are some luminaires that will make the audience feel pure emotion. The passive-filtered system brings the well-recognised dynamic and ultra-low distortion Alcons signature sound in a slim and unobtrusive package. Through the implementation of the Alcons proprietary RBN702 pro-ribbon transducer – an industry-first – the WR20 offers a non-compressed, identical tonal balance at any SPL, with up to 90% less distortion and also far less listening fatigue. Its fast impulse response, compressionless principle and flat frequency response offer a 3dB to 6dB improved gain- before-feedback over traditional systems – even with the most sensitive microphones – without steep tonal corrections, leaving the original signal unchanged. At the same time, it also caters for the benchmark-setting intelligibility in even the acoustically most-challenging applications. The pro-ribbon’s very high peak power handling of 1500W results in a unique 1:15 RMS to peak dynamic range, which means in practice a virtually unlimited headroom. The multiple-patented (H 45 x V 60-degrees) dispersion of the RBN702 offers a very controlled and consistent projection up to the highest frequencies. Mounted in a symmetrical tight-pack configuration with the two woofers, the projection control is extended down to the lower frequencies, while maintaining a relative small footprint. The two Alcons purpose-designed 10” woofers feature Active Coil technology for very low-distortion LF reproduction, a perfect match with the MHF pro-ribbon driver. The woofers are loaded by VelocityVent ports, for optimised breathing while extending the usable LF response down to 44Hz. As integral part of the Alcons eco system, WR20 is to be driven by the ALC amplified loudspeaker controller through the integrated VHIR processing, 192kHz AES3 digital inputs and audiophile amplifier stages, the ALC makes the WR20 deliver a natural sound quality with maximum output and utmost operation reliability. Philip ‘Dr.Phil’ de Haan, head of Alcons Audio R&D said: “We have had a floor or stage monitor on our development list for a long time. Despite quite a few prototypes though the years, it wasn’t until we developed the patent for the directivity control up to the highest frequencies in both planes for our pro-ribbon transducers. Being the first-ever Alcons dedicated stage monitor, we wanted to make a design statement to give it the extra edge over the traditional industry standards, which are typically aimed at being loud, but often lack the fidelity to be a truly accurate reference for the performer.” Philip continues: “For operation economy, we wanted to stick to a passive-filtered system, as with most of our designs. However, we also wanted ‘over-the-top’ headroom, so we opted for high efficiency components combined with large/maximum voice-coil real estate.” Weapon of choice for the mid and high frequencies became the RBN702rs, with a 7-inch voice-coil and 1500W peak power, coupled to a full-size waveguide for excellent directivity control. For the low frequencies, a completely new 10” was developed for the WR20, featuring a 3-inch ActiveCoil motor structure for the lowest distortion possible. Philip concludes: “The result of the combination is a unique ultra-low distortion reference system, with a very high dynamic range or, as we like to put it, WR20 combines the power to cut through the noise, with the elegance to reveal even the finest detail.” boxxtoff Box It Off boxxtoff is a vibrant new flightcase design and manufacturing company based in Manchester and part of the tube uk community. It is a fully autonomous operation producing stylish and practical bespoke casing solutions for all types of production-related kit. Dave Peacock (pictured), a bit of a legend on the Manchester flightcase scene, heads up the new enterprise, bringing around 35 years industry experience and passion, a vast array of contacts and a refreshing and inventive approach to case making. After a hugely successful career and running several flourishing businesses, Dave took a break from the world of flightcasing and joined the team at tube uk as a maintenance hero and independent voice two years ago. He was a great addition to tube, however after a short while, tube’s Melvyn Coote sensed that he still harboured a love for creating cases. Dave initially offered to make a couple of ingenious cases for tube’s Pioneer CDJ kits as a bit of a side hustle, which proved to be “simply fantastic products designed by someone who knows exactly what those using them need to make life simple and keep everything secure,” commented Melvyn. After this, Dave was asked to get involved in some more complex case building projects to re-case some of tube’s large stock of audio kit. Word soon spread on the industry grapevine and some of Dave’s own contacts got wind that he was making cases again, bringing more business into the company from those seeking the quality and crafting that his work guarantees. Melvyn highlights the benefits of Dave being able to grow the business naturally at his own pace and now having the advantages and infrastructural support as part of tube uk, which means Dave can concentrate on what he loves – being creative and productive – rather than on getting bogged down in accounting and administration. These embryonic steps all started in a lockup along the road from tube’s warehouse and grew organically until this official launch of boxxtoff, which moved into its own warehouse a few miles away in January, with substantially more space, better tooling and CNC cutting to make the operation precise and efficient. The 2,500 square foot premises has a further 1,500 square feet of mezzanine and is just off the M60 in Manchester. It is now set up and is a fully functioning manufacturing plant. In the last year, boxxtoff has completed large orders for Blackburn-based lighting rental company Lite Alternative and Manchester-based production specialists in audio, lighting and rigging, dbnAudile, among many others. “It’s still essentially a boutique operation,” emphasises Melvyn, Dave is involved in all the design and fabrication processes, and each case is hand- finished to perfection, built from quality materials. Dave also now has another craftsperson working alongside him, Lewis Trochymenko, who brings his own flair, insights, attention to detail and lateral thinking skills to the team. Like Dave, he takes a bristling pride in his work. boxxtoff can also call on the resources and skills of various tube uk team members like audio engineers John Redfern and Adam Taylor who can assist with CAD drawing as and when needed. The Lite Alternative job mentioned above involved casing a number of new Kinesys Apex hoists for automation systems that have recently been touring with the Arctic Monkeys and now Niall Horan. A high-end audio control system was cased for immersive mixed reality concert world tour “KAGAMI” which is currently out. Dave and Lewis will also be busy boxing up tube uk’s new infrastructure to go with their d&b KSL speaker system, which arrived last month after a substantial investment by the Manchester-based audio specialist. photo: tube ukIssue: 377 news 9 PULSE PANEL and PULSE PANEL FX from Elation merge creativity with explosive strobe power Elation has merged explosive strobe power with design creativity in the new PULSE series and has announced that two highly versatile effects in the line, the PULSE PANEL and PULSE PANEL FX, are now shipping. Designers have asked for effect lights that are more than a one-trick pony and the PULSE PANEL and PULSE PANEL FX deliver with multi-functionality as a powerful strobe, bright blinder, high-output wash light or creative eye candy effect in one. Perfect for concerts, nightclubs and theatrical spectacles, or any event craving electrifying visuals, the PULSE PANEL and PULSE PANEL FX infuse any performance with attention-grabbing moments of intense white or coloured light. Both fixtures incorporate zone-controllable RGB and cool white LEDs, 1152x 1.5W RGB LEDs establishing the foundation with 288 x 5W cool-white LEDs at its centre and 96 1.5W RGB LEDs at its core. Some 144 x 5W cool white LEDs line the perimeter. When combined, output is jaw-dropping at over 100,000 total lumens! “We saw what existed in the market with the standard tilting strobe and knew we wanted to create a more visually dynamic effect with higher impact,” comments Bob Mentele, associate product manager at Elation. “We added the CW LEDs on the outer edges to offer more output and visual impact and then capped those with a custom linear prismatic lens we had developed for our Proteus Rayzor Blade fixtures. To expand its capabilities even further, we included a single line of RGB LEDs right at the centre to add extra colour to the fixture, or they can be set to mirror the centre CW strobe LEDs. All of these elements combine to create a fixture we’ve really become excited to offer to the market.” Whether adding rhythmic flashes that synchronise with the music or crafting special effects for a more visually stimulating experience, customisable zone control of both the RGB and CW LEDs opens up for a myriad of design possibilities. Both fixtures also include a library of customisable RGB and CW strobe effects along with variable dimming modes and curves for quick programming. “We spent a lot of time thinking about the built-in effects for the fixture and how to make it easier for programmers to control, or to save time in creating effects,” Mentele says. “The library of effects has been created to allow the user to control numerous parameters of the output being created. Speed, direction, colour and size of the effect can all be adjusted as desired.” One of the most notable features of the PULSE PANEL FX is its ability to pan or spin its LED panel in an endless 360° rotation while 180° tilt adds an extra layer of dynamism. This gives users not only the ability to spin the LEDs endlessly, but also create tilted angle offsets and waves along a line of panels, expanding on the visual impact and creativity a designer can achieve. Controlled via DMX, RDM, Art-Net, sACN, and KlingNet protocols, both fixtures also feature proprietary Aria x2 wireless device management for simplified system setup and maintenance. The PULSE PANEL FX allows for the use of two separate universes to control the fixture, one for fixture movement and another for LED control, allowing users to control the LEDs from a media server or separate content control device. The iK41 combines high power density with rich and accurate audio performance, state-of-the-art DSP and network control, and is designed as a dedicated controller amplifier for Martin Audio WPM optimised line arrays, TORUS 8 constant curvature loudspeakers, as well as multi-channel amplification for select Martin Audio loudspeakers. This latest iKON amplifier can deliver a full 1500 Watts per channel into 4Ω and its high efficiency reduces the energy drawn from the mains supply and ensures the power reserves needed to deliver signature sound under arduous conditions. Ethernet is used for system remote control and monitoring via Martin Audio’s VU-NET software application, while a user-friendly front panel interface allows full local control of all features. Dante digital audio network inputs are also provided for digital audio distribution and control. Powerful DSP is fully integrated into the iK41 to provide a multitude of features that ensure maximum performance of select loudspeaker systems. It also provides up to 1000 FIR filter taps at 48kHz on each output channel, which is essential to implement DISPLAY’s wide bandwidth optimisation process in WPM line array systems. The iK41 employs comprehensive protection functions to maintain safe operating conditions of both the amplifier and the loudspeakers driven, including a sophisticated loudspeaker limiter suite which incorporates peak, RMS and excursion limiting, as well as multi- band limiting for passive two-way systems. Dom Harter, managing director, commented: “The success of iKON amplifiers has been undeniable and with this less expensive model being introduced it will allow for more efficient installations of WPM, TORUS 8 and FlexPoint systems. While we expect rental partners to continue their inventory of iK42, we also expect that some will see the benefit of holding additional iK41 inventory for their smaller events.” Clear-Com Unveils Arcadia Updates: Enhanced Intercom System Clear-Com has announced the latest release of Arcadia, the updated version of the award-winning intercom platform Arcadia.
