Issue: 391 Events industry rallies behind Backup Tech with a series of successful fundraising initiatives Backup Tech, the charity supporting those working behind the scenes in the entertainment technology industry, is celebrating a wave of successful fundraising initiatives that demonstrate the industry’s commitment to supporting its own workforce. The Profile Awards, created by Jennie and Durham Marenghi, celebrate excellence in theatre and television lighting design in the UK and held its second annual event during the ABTT Show at Alexandra Palace in June. This year’s event delivered exceptional results, with headline sponsor Ayrton and many other Awards sponsors contributing to a total donation of £2,000 to Backup, supplemented by £233 raised through the popular ‘Donate for a Mate’ initiative. The donation was presented by Briony Berning, design, training and business development engineer at Ayrton, to Backup’s charity co-ordinator Jess Allan on the night. Matt Hallard, European sales director at Ayrton, reflects on the company’s continued support: “When Durham and Jennie approached us with their vision of bringing recognition back to the world of creatives behind theatre and TV, we were thrilled to get involved. We proudly came on board as the headline sponsor for the inaugural awards in 2024 and continued our support for the most recent ceremony last month. As part of our 2024 sponsorship, we made a donation to Backup. In 2025, we were pleased to do the same, this time alongside other sponsors. Long may the awards thrive under their leadership and long may we all continue to recognise and support such a needed cause for our industry.” Meanwhile, Jack Gomm, known on social media as ‘The Running Tech’, continues his impressive fundraising journey through the Backup Challenge Fundraiser. This major challenge, taking place on 28th March 2026, will see him run 40 miles from his childhood home in Ivinghoe Aston, Buckinghamshire to where he lives today in Tooting. Jack has already raised nearly £800 towards his £2,500 goal through his Raisely page to support technicians and entertainment industry professionals struggling with addiction and mental health challenges. Jack has worked as project manager at AV event production and hire company, Perception Live, for around two years. The company has provided invaluable support to Jack regarding his own personal struggles, as well as promoting and spreading the word about his charity fundraiser challenge. “It’s a stressful industry and one that is fast paced and dynamic, which brings challenges we love, but that can also bring pressure,” Jack says. “Being a project manager in the events and entertainment industry and a recovered cocaine addict, I understand the importance of Backup’s work and the lives it can change.” Adding to the running community’s support for Backup, Ben Payne, senior director – business development at Harman, has undertaken his own unique running challenge and is also raising funds through his Raisely page. Starting from not being able to run 100 metres just a year ago, Ben has committed to completing a half marathon distance across eight days by running the London Vitality 10k and Cambridge Town and Gown 10k on back-to-back weekends, then completing an additional 1.1km mid-week. “To raise money for the wonderful Backup Tech charity, who do so much to support those in the industry, I am going to be running a half marathon, but with a difference,” Ben explains. “Whilst I’m doing it as a personal challenge for me, I thought that if I could raise a little more money for Backup, then that would be a good thing to do! I took it on because I’ve found that running has helped with both my fitness and mental health. I’ve enjoyed it far more than I thought I ever would.” Neg Earth Lights demonstrated corporate social responsibility through a charity plant sale organised by procurement manager, Matthew Alston. Staff generosity resulted in £280.91 raised for Backup Tech, showing how workplace initiatives can make a meaningful difference. “Neg Earth Lights have partnered with Backup for several years and it’s important for Pip, Dave and Sam Ridgway (MD/directors) to support an industry charity that does such amazing work,” says Anna Gould, head of marketing at Neg Earth Lights. “We do quite a few fundraising initiatives throughout the year, like plant sales, swag sales, bake sales, all to raise money for industry charities. We’re also supporting the Backup Village Fete this year to drive awareness for this important charity doing great work supporting technical professionals in the entertainment industry.” For the third consecutive year, Marisa Beckman has organised a tea and chat fundraiser, set to take place during the London International Horse Show this December, continuing her dedicated support for Backup’s mission. Marisa’s most recent tea and chat fundraiser raised £173.28 for the charity. Finally, in a remarkable show of solidarity, lighting technician Urko Arruza has just completed a 220km walk along the Grand Union Canal from London to Birmingham. His “Solidarity Walk for Mental Health in Live Entertainment”, from 7th-11th July, aims to raise awareness of mental health challenges in the industry while generating funds for Backup. Urko’s initiative highlights critical issues facing entertainment industry professionals, including chronic job insecurity, extreme working hours, lack of structural support, social isolation and the lasting impact of COVID-19 on the sector. He passed the initial fundraising goal on his Raisely page and, having increased his target, has now raised over £2,200. “The entertainment industry has given me so much over the years, but I’ve also seen how it can take its toll on people’s mental health and wellbeing,” Urko says. “I saw this quote somewhere – ‘touring gives, touring takes’ – and it really sums up what I feel. That’s why I’m walking 220km along the Grand Union Canal: to show solidarity with everyone in our industry who’s struggling and to raise awareness that we need to look after each other better. Mental health challenges are real in live entertainment and through Backup we can make sure no one has to face them alone.” To find out more about Backup fundraising initiatives, donate, or set up your own challenge, visit https://www.backuptech.uk/support-our-work/ organise-a-fundraiser/September 2025 news 4 Elation Expands Award-Winning Paragon Series with Paragon LT Elation has announced the expansion of its award-winning Paragon series with the new Paragon LT, a cutting-edge, long-throw LED profile luminaire purpose-built to deliver high- impact visuals for large productions and stadium shows. Engineered for the future, the Paragon LT incorporates breakthrough technologies, proprietary patents and new industry standards: full output even with framing or animation engaged, variable CRI control that allows seamless adjustment from CRI 70 to CRI 93, a new dimming system boosting brightness by 4%, turbo mode for up to 20% more output, a lighter yet stronger chassis, whisper-quiet CMY mixing, the largest rotating gobo wheel in Elation’s history and re-engineered frost and zoom systems cutting noise by up to 10dB. “The Paragon LT is the result of listening closely to the needs of designers working at the highest levels of live production and on the biggest shows,” said Matthias Hinrichs, product manager at Elation. “With its massive output, tight beam and all the cutting-edge technology that Paragon has quickly developed a reputation for, it delivers the power and flexibility they need to create stand-out moments in high-profile environments.” At the heart of the Paragon LT is a 1300W variable CRI white LED engine delivering an intense, high-quality output of up to 52,000 lumens, ideal for large-scale productions that demand exceptional brightness over long distances. With a massive 200mm front lens and a fast zoom range from 3.7° to 48°, the Paragon LT delivers both sharp, punchy beams and soft, wide wash coverage, offering exceptional adaptability for designers seeking to maximise impact across various performance scales. As part of the broader Paragon family – winner of the 2024 LDI Best Debuting Product Award and 2025 ABTT Lighting Product of the Year Award – the LT model shares the same DNA that has redefined expectations in the lighting industry. Central to that innovation is Elation’s proprietary TruTone system, a variable CRI control that allows seamless adjustment from CRI 70 to CRI 93, enabling lighting designers to fine-tune both colour fidelity and light output to meet any creative requirement. “TruTone is about flexibility and lighting precision,” said Hinrichs. “With Paragon, you can have a high-output effect light and a high-CRI key light in the same show, without switching fixtures. The Paragon LT offers that versatility and level of accuracy, now for the largest stages.” The Paragon LT integrates Elation’s most advanced technologies and provides the designer with a full FX suite: three gobo wheels (two rotating, one fixed), a full animation wheel, overlapping dual prisms, dual frosts and a high-speed iris. Its indexable full-blackout framing system provides exacting beam shaping and detailed shutter cuts, making it an essential tool for broadcast, theatrical, concert touring and architectural lighting. The Paragon features Elation’s fastest and quietest CMY colour mixing system to date, combined with a variable linear CTO, offering smooth transitions, deep colour control and exacting visuals. Elation’s innovative SpectraColor colour mixing system – made popular in the Artiste series of LED moving heads – is available as an option. SpectraColor uses a CMY + RGB colour mixing array in combination with the variable CTO to deliver an expanded colour range, from subtle theatrical pastels to rich, saturated primaries, giving lighting designers exceptional creative flexibility. Paragon utilises Elation’s advanced Ultra Dimming system, which allows for incredibly precise low-level control and operates at a very high refresh rate of 25000Hz. This unique feature enables seamless intensity transitions even at the lowest dimming levels and slowest crossfades, while maintaining optimum refresh rates to avoid camera scrolling, issues with phone image capture and other unwanted interference. Designed for multi-role applications, the Paragon’s precision-engineered profile lens can be swapped for a Fresnel, wash or PC beam lens, allowing a single fixture to serve multiple creative purposes across lighting designs. One fixture, multiple applications. Whether you’re looking for a precise profile, a rich wash or a powerful beam, Paragon LT delivers. In noise-critical environments, Paragon provides several low-noise modes that minimise distractions for quieter operation. A specialised theatre mode further reduces sound by slowing specific motors to decrease audibility and resonance. This mode can be remotely activated via the control channel, allowing the fixture to adapt to specific situations as the performance requires. The Paragon LT is built to endure inclement weather and withstand the rigours of tough show schedules. With an IP54 weatherproof rating, it offers protection against water and dust ingress and is ready to perform reliably both indoors and in temporary outdoor settings. Its advanced HEPA filtration system protects internal components while maintaining cooling efficiency, reducing maintenance, while extending the fixture’s life. For even greater peace of mind and long-term reliability, Paragon comes with extended warranty coverage, which includes protection for the first three years of operation and a five-year warranty on the LED array. Building on the Paragon foundation of excellence, the Paragon LT sets a new standard in long- throw LED profile luminaires by combining powerful output, advanced features and rugged durability to meet the demands of today’s largest productions. Based in the UK, with 17 years of experience, TMB notes Paul brings a wealth of knowledge in production and staging technology, operations and product applications across live events, theatre and high-end film and television. Born and raised in London, Paul earned a degree in history and politics. During his studies, he spent summers working for PRG: loading lorries, cleaning cables and learning the ropes of the industry first-hand. After graduation, he returned to the world of lighting, beginning as a ‘lampy’ at Essential Lighting before moving into a sales role at White Light. Paul’s career took a pivotal turn when a former manager introduced him to the film and television lighting world. He joined Richard Martin Lighting, where he progressed from technician to warehouse manager, overseeing rental inventory and equipment maintenance. He later joined Light Initiative, where he spent seven years in senior leadership roles, including head of warehouse and service, and head of asset management and logistics. There, he managed extensive fleets of both custom and conventional lighting kit on gigs for TV and corporate, plus music videos and experiential projects, contributing to some truly groundbreaking productions. “I was a TMB customer for nearly 15 years and always admired the company’s ethos, exceptional service and high-quality products,” said Paul. “With my many years of experience spanning sales, logistics and production, I’m proud to now bring that perspective to TMB and our customers.” “Paul’s technical expertise includes LED lighting, creative rigging, power distribution, proprietary control protocols and fixture repair and diagnostics, making him a valuable technical resource for TMB and our customers,” said Roland Rizk of TMB. “Paul brings a rare blend of technical depth and operational know-how, along with a great, positive attitude. His hands-on product experience – both in the shop and on site – will make him an ideal partner for customers facing complex lighting and control challenges.” Based in London, Paul joins TMB’s established global team, working primarily in the UK and EMEA, alongside Lauren Drinkwater, Tim Obermann, Chris Curran and Nick Berenok, under the leadership of Roland Rizk. Paul Brazil will be at PLASA London 2025 on TMB Stand A59. The New Chauvet Professional Maverick Force X Profile: The Next Step in Reimagined Moving Fixtures Just over four years ago, Chauvet Professional’s product developers set out to reimagine their moving head line-up by creating a fixture that didn’t sacrifice output for compact size. The result was the widely celebrated Maverick Force S series, a collection of profiles and spots that combine intense output along with a host of impressive performance features, in a surprisingly trim (and very solid) package. Offering the best of both worlds, in terms of output and size, this series opened new creative possibilities for lighting professionals. Now, the revolution continues! Chauvet Professional has taken its reimagination of moving fixtures a step further with the introduction of the Maverick Force X Profile. Like its popular predecessors, the new 520W profile delivers unprecedented output (19,640 lumens) for a fixture its size (361 x 239 x 646mm). Another way to appreciate this fixture’s intensity: its illuminance ranges from 1207 lux to 102,764 lux, depending on the beam angle. The secret is in its LED source, which does not require a large optical path or extensive cooling system. The pioneering combination of output and size gives designers unparalleled freedom to position the Maverick Force X Profile in tight spaces, while also making it simpler, faster and less physically demanding to set up and take down rigs. Going beyond its impressive power-to-size ratio, the new ruggedly designed profile is loaded with performance features that will take lighting designs to the next level. The Maverick Force X Profile has a larger front lens (145mm diameter) than its predecessors. Its beam angle is an impressive 3.3° to 52.1°, while its field angle goes from 3.7° to 56.3° and its zoom range is a broad 3.3° to 58.5. The Maverick Force X Profile is also a colour mixing marvel, with a CRI of 72.2 (87.6 with filter). Its variable CMY colour wheel includes CRI, CTO and CTB filters plus white and split colours, and it offers continuous scroll at variable speeds. Adding to the fixture’s versatility are its zoom optics, framing shutters with rotation and two gobo wheels (one rotating and one static), as well as 16- bit dimming of master dimmer for smooth control of fades and five-facet prism and frost, plus four-blade framing shutters with dual axis movements. Thanks to its compact design, the Maverick Force X Profile, which has a pan and tilt of 540°/270°, can create dramatic, mind-blowingly rapid movements to generate breathtaking excitement on the stage, dance floor or throughout a venue. This compact high-performance lighting tool is also engineered for reliability, as it features a battery backup display with auto-rotate depending on fixture orientation and a failsafe Ethernet connectivity that allows data to pass even if fixture power is lost. It selectable PWM of600Hz, 1500Hz, 2000Hz 65000HzHz also ensures flicker free operation. Given its incredible array of performance features, the new Maverick Force X Profile continues the reimagination journey begun by its predecessor in stellar fashion, proving the time-honoured adage that “progress never stands still,” but builds on itself as one advancement leads to another.Issue: 391 news 9 WEATHERPROOF LONG-LASTING POWERFUL QUIET LIGHT ELECTRIC CHAIN HOIST LP 3 YEAR WARRANTY CH-6247 Schötz I Phone +41 41 984 11 33 I tel@gis-ag.ch I www.gis-ag.ch RIG IT EASY WITH GIS VISIT US AT 8.4. - 11.4.2025 I HALL 12.0 BOOTH E65 Backup appoints new Chair Backup Tech, the charity supporting those working behind the scenes in the entertainment technology industry, has announced the appointment of Lee Dennison as its new chair. Lee, a Backup Trustee for 13 years and orchestrator of the hugely popular annual Village Fete, has taken over the reins from Piers Shepperd who has served as chair for the past three years and a trustee for a decade. He has been instrumental in implementing a highly successful structure behind the scenes, building on the foundations of his predecessor. During his time at the charity, he has seen Backup continue to provide vital medical grants and address the challenges faced by today’s freelancers by increasing its initiatives around wellbeing support, including sharing industry initiatives that help improve awareness and foster more open communication about mental health, addition and recovery, and general wellbeing, as well as financial wellbeing. During his time as chair, Piers also instigated the ambassador and partner programmes, implemented a new grant portal to improve the process for the grant committee and introduced a limit on the time both the trustees and the chair can serve. “I did that for many reasons, a major one being that we understand that people’s time [is] valuable and, with mental health always in mind, we want to make sure no one becomes overwhelmed,” he says. “We also want to ensure we can bring in new, fresh perspectives to make sure Backup stays relevant as the industry continues to change and freelancers face new and different challenges. “I have thoroughly enjoyed by time as chair and I’m proud that, collectively, we have continued to make a positive difference to the industry’s freelance community. I’m stepping down with mixed emotions as I’ll miss the camaraderie of the team and the joy of seeing when we’ve made a difference to people’s lives. But it’s time to hand over the reins and I know that Lee will do a sterling job of leading Backup into its next chapter.” “As Piers Sheppard steps down as chair of Backup, I want to take a moment to recognise the immense contribution he’s made,” says Lee. “When we lost John Simpson, Piers stepped in and helped shape the systems and processes that now ensure every support request is handled with professionalism, empathy and speed. While we can’t take away the problem, Backup exists to ease the pressure through the support it offers. “I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Piers for many years, most recently as vice-chair. That shared continuity and passion is something I’m committed to carrying forward with our brilliant trustees and ambassadors. “Backup has always been built by the industry, for the industry and it’s our job to make sure it stays fit for purpose, ready to support those in the industry who need it most.” In picture: Lee Dennison and Piers Shepperd.Next >
