Issue: 393 Unusual Rigging HQ Named ‘Best of the Best’ at Prestigious BCO National Awards Unusual Rigging is celebrating a landmark achievement after its Northamptonshire headquarters was named Best of the Best at the 2025 British Council for Offices (BCO) National Awards. The building, which was delivered by architects Corstorphine & Wright and designed and constructed entirely around circular economy principles, also won the highly coveted Corporate Workplace category. The BCO National Awards, held on 7 th October at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House in London, brought together more than 1,200 senior figures from across the workplace design, development and property sectors to celebrate excellence in the built environment. Judges described Unusual HQ as a “model for how modern offices can combine innovation, sustainability and long-term vision.” Achieving an EPC A+ rating and designed to be fully disassembled and reused at the end of its life, the headquarters embodies Unusual Rigging’s deep-rooted commitment to sustainability and innovation, setting a new benchmark for environmentally responsible workplace design. Tom Harper, managing director of Unusual Rigging said: “Winning these awards last night is immensely invigorating. They stand as a testament to the work undertaken on our HQ and research centre, and to the strides we have made in our aspiration to support the acceleration towards a circular economy. We would like to thank BCO, the judges and all of our colleagues, friends, contractors and suppliers who helped us realise our vision.” Accepting the award, alongside Tom was Jonny Plant, director of Corstorphine & Wright. He added: “We are thrilled to have been recognised by the BCO for our work on Unusual’s new headquarters. It has been a privilege to help deliver such an innovative and ground-breaking scheme, one that redefines what is possible in sustainable workplace design. Working in close collaboration with Tom and his team, we have brought to life a building that embodies circular economy principles, setting new standards for low-carbon design, wellbeing and user experience.” The recognition comes as Unusual Rigging continues to grow its reputation as one of the UK’s most forward-thinking providers of rigging, engineering and technical solutions for the entertainment and events industries. Its focus on circular design, resource efficiency and sustainable innovation extends beyond its own headquarters, influencing how the company approaches projects worldwide. BCO National Awards judging chair Mike Burton said this year’s winners reflected a shift in how workplace excellence is defined. “These projects show that offices can be catalysts for wellbeing, creativity and urban renewal,” he said. The presentation took place at the Stephen Joseph Theatre (SJT) in Scarborough on the 28th September, following a rehearsed reading of Ayckbourn’s much-loved play Relatively Speaking. This year marks the 70th anniversary of professional theatre-in-the-round: a movement Sir Alan has championed throughout his remarkable career. The award was established by the ABTT’s Stephen Joseph Committee (SJC) to commemorate the legacy of Stephen Joseph, a founding member of the ABTT and one of the foremost pioneers of theatre-in- the-round in the UK. The honour is awarded to individuals who, like Joseph, have made lifelong, groundbreaking contributions to theatre practice and innovation. Sir Alan was presented with a bespoke bronze miniature theatre-in- the-round trophy, inspired by an original sketch by Stephen Joseph and designed by SJC member Andrew Sanders, along with a formal certificate of achievement. Sir Alan Ayckbourn said: “This Award means a lot to me, having spent a good portion of my life trying to spread Stephen’s passion for innovative, practical theatre buildings; in other words building theatres that actually work!” Over his remarkable career Sir Alan Ayckbourn has not only acted major parts for the Theatre in the Round Company but directed over 300 productions in-the-round, written 91 plays – almost all of which have premiered in-the-round – served as artistic director of the SJT for 36 years and of course helped to guide the SJT through several key transitions, including the move into its current space, a remodelled 1936 Odeon cinema which is an iconic blend of Art Deco heritage and modern performance space. His influence on the evolution of British theatre and his steadfast commitment to the in-the-round format has shaped how audiences and performers connect in intimate, dynamic ways. Bob Millington, ABTT Stephen Joseph chairman who presented the award added: “At anniversaries like this, it is usually Sir Alan who stands before us, telling the story of Stephen Joseph and the pioneering work that shaped modern theatre-in-the-round. But today, we turn the spotlight where it so rightly belongs and ask the world’s leading practitioner of theatre-in-the-round to take the bow himself!” The Stephen Joseph Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates those who have made lasting, innovative contributions to theatre, especially in the spirit of collaboration, experimentation and access that Joseph pioneered. The award’s unique design – a polished bronze miniature theatre-in-the-round is both a tribute to that legacy and a work of art in its own right. ETC Launches New Eight-Port DMX Gateways ETC is expanding its Response Mk2 DMX Gateway family with two new eight-port options: a full-width gateway with eight XLR connections and a half-width gateway with eight terminal connections. Kirk Starks, ETC marketing product manager, says: “No matter if there are a bunch of homeruns from LED coves running back to an equipment rack, or a complex concert rig, I’m excited about the possibilities that come with trusted DMX control from these new eight- port gateways.” These higher-density gateways deliver the same system functionality at a lower price, while utilising less rack space. With multiple mounting options and repositionable network ports, the Response Mk2 eight-port DMX gateway fits comfortably wherever it is needed. The Terminal version is the same size as ETC’s current four-port gateway, packing twice the number of three-position terminal connections into the same amount of space. Using an existing rack- mount kit, it is possible to get 16 ports of DMX output into a 1U rack space by mounting two eight-port terminal gateways side-by-side. Spend less of your budget to achieve the same number of DMX outputs with the new Response Mk2 eight-port gateway. Over the past few years, he has worked alongside Brian, gaining an in-depth understanding of the company’s operations and financial strategy, and preparing for this next step in his career. Reflecting on the transition, Mark said: “I am honoured to take on the role of finance director. The opportunity to work closely with Brian since I joined the company has been invaluable and I look forward to building on the strong financial foundations he has established as we continue to evolve and grow.” Brian added: “I have been finance director with Unusual for 37 years and in that time have seen it has grown from a small company to a worldwide group. I am proud of what we have achieved and have complete confidence in Mark’s ability to take the business forward. Extremely compact, lightweight, ultrafast and powerful, MagicDot Neo is a meticulously crafted cylindrical luminaire with a unique design, featuring a 100mm lens seamlessly set within a perfect sphere. The performance of MagicDot Neo is largely based on its extreme miniaturisation and minimalist cylindrical shape. Measuring only 35cm, but with continuous double rotation on the pan and tilt axes, MagicDot Neo is capable of truly magnificent feats. Fixtures can be clustered with minimal spacing between units to open up configurations that were previously impossible. Individual control over each light source is maintained in every direction meaning unprecedented levels of integration are now possible, even allowing the creation of ultra- compact matrices or concentric circles in which the fixtures appear almost fused together. Equipped with a brand-new 120W RGB-L multi- chip LED source paired with a high-efficiency 100mm optic, MagicDot Neo delivers a total output of 3,000 lumens for an overall power consumption of only 160 watts and a 16,000 lux output at a distance of five metres. It’s time … MagicDot Neo … enter a new creative sphere that is as inspiring as it is radical! AVC and Elation Revive Croatia’s Kazalište 21 Kazalište 21 (Theater 21) in Sisak, Croatia, one of the city’s most cherished cultural landmarks, has reopened its doors with a state-of-the-art Elation lighting system by Audio Video Consulting (AVC), marking a major milestone in the theatre’s post-earthquake recovery. The 6.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the region on 29 December, 2020, caused significant damage to the venue, temporarily silencing a key hub of local arts and culture. The newly renovated theatre is a modern performance venue, capable of hosting theatre, music and puppet productions at the highest professional level. Operated by Dom kulture Kristalna kocka vedrine – City Theatre Sisak, its contemporary aesthetics are matched by an advanced technical infrastructure, offering a flexible and inspiring environment for artists and audiences alike. At the heart of this transformation is a new Elation lighting rig and Obsidian control solution, designed and installed by Zagreb-based integrator AVC. AVC, a specialist in high-tech audiovisual installations, oversaw the project from initial concept to full implementation, delivering a modern system that prepares the 200-seat venue for a wide range of creative productions. The Elation lighting replaces many of the theatre’s outdated tungsten fixtures and includes 18 KL PAR FC full colour spectrum LED PARs, 12 KL Fresnel 8 FC LED Fresnels and four Fuze SFX LED spot/effects fixtures. The KL PARs and KL Fresnels deliver rich, vibrant washes and precise colour temperature control, while the Fuze SFX provide dynamic effects and powerful backlighting. The theatre now features modern LED fixtures for soft lighting and spot applications, complemented by a few remaining tungsten units. “For us, Elation was the perfect choice: a modern, reliable solution that enables the theatre to meet today’s production demands while looking toward the future,” said Marino Frankola, lighting specialist at AVC who was responsible for the lighting design. “This is just one of a series of future projects we plan to realise with Elation and we are extremely pleased with what we have achieved on this small but very important stage.” Frankola notes that the client is especially pleased with the KL PAR FC full colour spectrum LED fixtures, which are positioned around the stage as front, side and top light. “The possibilities, the power, the barndoors and the combination with the KL Fresnels are very practical,” he says. The KL Fresnel 8 FC units serve as LED substitutes for the 2kW tungsten fixtures previously used. The theatre is particularly happy that they no longer need to change gels for backlight, sidelight or overhead positions. Both KL fixtures house RGBMA colour mixing engines, ensuring a perfect colour match across the rig. The five-colour system delivers a full-spectrum palette of rich, saturated hues and subtle pastels, along with precise white balance and fine control over colour temperature. A unique combination of spot and effects fixture, the multi-purpose Fuze SFX’s 18 gobos and dual prisms allow for creative mid-air FX and precise image projections. Positioned on two trusses, they are often used as backlight for specials. The new system is controlled via an Obsidian Control Systems NX1 console, providing powerful, intuitive Onyx control in a compact design, with an NX K control surface extension. The theatre’s outdated control hardware has been replaced in an upgrade that marks a significant technological leap beyond submaster-only operation. Cue-based programming now allows the theatre staff the flexibility to create intricate lighting sequences with ease, enabling a wider range of creative possibilities. “The upgrade was invaluable,” Frankola stated. “The NX1 is a good fit because it is easy-to-learn software and very user-friendly. It is a good console for someone who isn’t necessarily a lighting control expert or up to date on the latest in lighting control.” Comprehensive training was a key part of the project. AVC spent a week on site teaching the theatre staff to operate the NX1 and the Onyx platform, complemented by online tutorials. For a team accustomed to traditional lighting practices, the transition was transformative. Staff praised the control system for its ease of use and creative possibilities, describing it as “a great discovery” that simplified operations. The Elation lighting installation was completed early in the summer and debuted with a production of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince, directed by Helena Petković with lighting design by Vesna Kolarec. Both the audience and behind-the-scenes personnel were delighted with the play and the new lighting system, which showed its impact in enhancing the atmosphere and highlighting the appeal of the costumes and scenery. “Now they can achieve different artistic and aesthetic looks very easily. The new lighting rig has really enhanced their possibilities,” noted Frankola. With its new Elation lighting, Kazalište 21 has restored its technical capabilities, opened the door to new creative opportunities and re-established its role as a vibrant cultural hub for the community.November 2025 news 6 Audient Launches ORIA Mini: Dedicated Room Correction Hardware Powered by Sonarworks British audio brand, Audient, in collaboration with audio technology innovator, Sonarworks announces ORIA Mini, a compact yet powerful room correction system designed to give music creators, producers and studio owners the confidence to trust every mix. ORIA Mini delivers professional-grade acoustic calibration in a dedicated hardware device, no software needed, no CPU strain, no latency and no second-guessing. “Every engineer knows the frustration of chasing mixes that don’t translate outside the studio,” says Andrew Allen, product and marketing director at Audient. “The truth is, your room is usually the problem and if you can’t trust what you’re hearing, you can’t trust your mix. One of the most versatile is The Beacon, a custom-made mobile venue, which is being constructed, dismantled and moved between four different parks across the 141 square-mile district. A packed schedule of events at each site includes weekday shows and weekend festivals, featuring music, comedy, clubs, classes, family activities and more. Experienced Bradford-based specialist Pro Audio Systems (PAS) was engaged to supply and install the venue’s technical requirements, including a robust, high quality and flexible lighting system from Chauvet Professional, which could cater for the wide-ranging demands of the venue’s ambitious programme. Having a maximum capacity of 300 for standing gigs, The Beacon is used at each site in a number of different orientations to accommodate its extremely busy and diverse programme. Layouts for cabaret, in- the-round, end-on and even a central catwalk were all required, which in turn meant that with insufficient time to de-rig between events, the lighting system needed to be designed and fixed to seamlessly cater for whatever activity (in whatever format) was taking place. The PAS team collaborated closely with Bradford 2025 venue technical manager, experienced technician Sam McCarthy Robinson who designed the system to ensure optimal coverage and flexibility. Graham Barron, Chauvet Professional business development manager, UK north, was on hand to provide support and advice. Lighting throughout is by Chauvet Professional, with more than 75 fixtures deployed from the COLORado, Maverick and Rogue families. Control data is distributed via two Net-X II Ethernet to DMX nodes and two RDMX Splitter 8. An Amhaze ECO haze machine was also installed to enhance a variety of productions. Sam McCarthy Robinson comments: “The lighting rig at The Beacon needs to be incredibly versatile; it has to handle everything from theatre to live music to community events, often back-to-back and without the luxury of time for constant re-rigs. With the packed programme planned for Bradford 2025, flexibility wasn’t a‘nice to have’, it was essential. “The Rogue range in particular, has been a standout for us. The Rogue Outcast 2 Hybrid and Rogue R2X Wash units can quickly pivot from creating sharp, theatrical spot looks to delivering rich, immersive atmospherics or high-energy, dynamic effects for gigs. They’re essentially doing the work of multiple fixtures in one, which not only simplifies programming but also future-proofs the rig for whatever the calendar throws at us. Importantly, the fixtures also strike the right balance between output and weight: a critical consideration in a venue like The Beacon, where there are structural load limitations. Chauvet’s kit has allowed us to design a rig that’s both robust and responsive, capable of handling the creative and technical demands of a truly multi-faceted venue.” Chauvet Professional’s Graham Barron adds: “The demands of this venue meant that the fixture choice had to match the varied use of the space, so a selection offloods, profiles and moving lights was a perfect solution.Maverick Force 2 Profiles deliver the drama, focus and keylighting to add to the overall backdrop of utility and colour lighting provided by the COLORado 72X linear units and COLORado 1QS wash lights.” St. Francis of Assisi Basilica Enhances Pilgrim Experience with JBL Intellivox Technology One of the most iconic spiritual destinations in the world, the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi recently underwent a major audio and control system upgrade to enhance the worship and visitor experience for millions of annual pilgrims. The project brought together JBL Intellivox loudspeakers, BSS signal processing and AMX control systems to deliver precise coverage, intuitive operation and seamless integration across the site’s 10,000-square-metre outdoor space. The Basilica of St. Francis holds deep cultural and spiritual significance as the birthplace of the Franciscan movement, characterised by humility, poverty and devotion to all creation. With two adjoining churches, frescoes by Giotto and an expansive piazza that hosts large gatherings of worshippers and tourists, the site presents unique challenges for sound reinforcement. Acoustic demands include projecting spoken word over distances of up to 70 metres, covering both upper and lower squares with consistent clarity, and preserving the historic architecture by discreetly integrating technology into centuries-old stone walls. To meet these challenges, the integration team deployed six JBL Intellivox HP-DS370 loudspeakers and two JBL Intellivox HP- DS170 loudspeakers, custom-coloured to blend into the Basilica’s environment. Known for their ability to deliver highly focused coverage, the Intellivox arrays ensured uniform sound pressure levels and exceptional speech intelligibility throughout the outdoor spaces while minimising reflections and acoustic spill. System processing and distribution relied on the BSS BLU-160 with a BLU-DAN, supported by BLU input and output cards. Control was achieved through AMX Varia SL-50 touch panels positioned at key points across the Basilica, along with AMX Muse 2300 processors and N2600 Series encoders and decoders to simplify audio and video management for non-technical users. The installation was led by FP Service under the direction of owner Gianni Ferroni, with design support from Exhibo’s pre-sales specialists Andrea Ficara and Massimo Fucà and programming by Marco Saini. Despite logistical challenges, including transporting equipment along the Basilica’s narrow access roads, the integration was completed on schedule. According to Basilica communications director, Giulio Cesareo, the community response has been overwhelmingly positive, with visitors remarking on the intelligibility and presence of the system even in the upper square. “The intelligibility is really impressive,” he said. “The system enhances our ability to share the message of St. Francis with clarity, while remaining respectful of the Basilica’s history and sacred environment.” By combining the precision of JBL Intellivox with the durability of BSS and the simplicity of AMX control, the project sets a new benchmark for how advanced technology can be harmoniously integrated into world heritage sites. For the millions of pilgrims and visitors who continue to gather in Assisi each year, the Basilica now offers a richer, clearer and more accessible spiritual experience.November 2025 news 8 Allen & Heath’s AHM V1.6 Delivers Powerful New Tools for Large-Scale, Flexible Installations Allen & Heath has announced the release of firmware V1.6 for its AHM series of audio matrix processors, introducing a suite of new features including unit stacking, expanded third-party control and integrated feedback suppression, further bridging the worlds of commercial integration and systems engineering and offering new levels of control and scalability. “With AHM V1.6, we’re expanding the possibilities for both commercial integrators and system engineers,” says Samantha Potter, commercial audio manager at Allen & Heath. “It’s a release that puts the best of both worlds into a single platform, opening up new applications in hospitality, entertainment, houses of worship, education and more.” The headline feature in V1.6 is unit stacking, a major step forward in scalability for the platform. For the first time, multiple AHM processors can be managed, monitored and controlled from a single Project within System Manager, introducing custom views of channels across the entire system. Unit stacking empowers integrators and system engineers to design and operate larger, more complex systems with the same speed and simplicity expected from smaller systems. V1.6 also brings expanded third-party control and monitoring, enabling AHM to integrate tightly with devices such as displays, video switchers, microphones and amplifiers. Additionally, device behaviour can be monitored directly from IP controllers, providing end-users with greater visibility and confidence in day-to-day operation. Making its debut in V1.6, feedback suppression helps to tame problem frequencies and prevent unwanted feedback across up to eight zones. Available on AHM-32 and AHM-64 units fitted with the AEC/processing expansion card, feedback suppression provides peace of mind for integrators, ensuring stability in acoustically challenging environments, with even the most eccentric or unpredictable speakers. Additional features and improvements include new ganging options for levels, delays and dynamics, building on the EQ ganging introduced in V1.5. Workflow refinements such as socket labelling, processing block visibility, global mute and level controls and playback looping further streamline system design and management. V1.6 also adds support for embedded recall with dLive and Avantis systems, VLAN compatibility for SLink and gigaACE connections and a host of other improvements. “We are continuing to develop AHM in direct response to the needs of our customers,” adds Potter. “With V1.6 we’re proving that powerful, scalable systems don’t have to come at the expense of workflow speed or audio quality, ensuring integrators and system engineers can deliver outstanding results in any application.” AHM V1.6 is available for download now from the Allen & Heath website: https://www.allen-heath.com/ahm-v1-6/ KV2 Audio expands VHD Series with the groundbreaking VHD7000D Subwoofer Amplifier A global leader in loudspeaker innovation, KV2 Audio has announced the latest addition to its VHD Series with the VHD7000D subwoofer amplifier. Expertly engineered to drive all VHD, ES and SL subwoofer elements, the VHD7000D guarantees uncompromising power and exceptional control, making it the perfect choice for large-scale events. From nightclub installations to touring productions, its advanced set up options allow for effortless integration into any KV2 Audio system. This universal bass amplifier is fully compatible with third-party subwoofers, a first for KV2. An innovative power management system enables the VHD7000D to deliver short-term power of 7kW, with peak output up to 14kW, while operating at a modest consumption of only 3.6kW from a 16A circuit. The peak output power extends far beyond the capacity of the mains supply and out-performs comparable amplifiers. A standout feature is the integrated RMS limiter, which provides long-term protection for loudspeaker components by monitoring average power over time and analysing thermal behaviour to control temperature build-up. This ensures efficient power management, preventing overheating, compression, or driver damage. Pre-configured within the VHD7000D’s factory presets, it maximises SPL output, minimises thermal compression at high temperatures and maintains natural sound dynamics even during continuous high-output operation, ensuring consistent performance in demanding live and installation environments. Another key feature is the tuneable notch filter for resonance suppression. It prevents excessive cone excursion that causes distortion, reduced clarity and shortened lifespan. Essential for touring or permanent installations, it delivers clear, precise and impactful audio with a balanced low-frequency response and improved definition across the bass range. The peak limiter provides additional protection, shielding loudspeakers from mechanical damage caused by excessive signal peaks and ensuring the cones remain within their safe range of motion. This feature prevents smaller loudspeakers from being overloaded and guarantees safe, reliable amplifier performance even at the highest volumes. The amplifier also incorporates a high-power switching mode power supply circuit for enhanced power delivery, onboard overdrive protection for reliable performance and remote configuration capability via KV2’s Control and Diagnostics Tool. With its groundbreaking power management, advanced protection systems and precision control features, the VHD7000D subwoofer amplifier sets a new benchmark in low-frequency amplification. Whether driving KV2’s own VHD, ES and SL Series or third-party subwoofers, it delivers unmatched performance, reliability and clarity. The VHD7000D is more than just an amplifier, it’s a powerful tool for engineers and sound professionals to push the limits of performance and deliver truly unforgettable audio experiences, no matter the scale or environment. And while the Quantum852 firmly sits atop of the line as the brand’s flagship large-format desk, DiGiCo now introduces its smallest and newest addition to the family – the Quantum112 – a single-screen, 12-fader desk that is DiGiCo’s first true flypack mixer. Designed to fit within a rugged and robust Peli Air 1637 case, the console, when packed, weighs only 23kg, qualifying it as a standard checked bag option on most flights. But despite its ultra-compact form factor, the Quantum112 is still a giant on features and functionality, every bit a Quantum in terms of its pedigree. Based on the latest seventh-generation FPGAs, DiGiCo’s latest product offers 80 input channels with 24 aux/subgroup busses, LR/LCR master busses and a 12x8 matrix, all with full channel processing. Twelve control groups plus two solos are also available. Sporting a 17-inch, 1000-nit, high-brightness multi-touch screen with both a meterbridge and soft quick select buttons for speedy and intuitive operation, the Quantum112 is additionally equipped with 18 individual TFT channel displays to provide clear user feedback and interaction. Beneath the main display are a dozen newly-sourced 100mm touch-sensitive faders, selected for their smooth movement and precision control. The DiGiCo Quantum112 naturally incorporates now-familiar Quantum Range features like Mustard Processing channel strips (20), Spice Rack plug-in style native FPGA processing options (six) and Nodal Processing (24). Twelve graphic EQs are further available, as are eight FX Rack slots. Other highlights include Stadius 32-bit ADC and DAC conversion, dual DMI slots and a host of versatile I/O options, including Dante (64 channels in and 64 channels out at both 48kHz and 96kHz), MADI (redundant or single), optional optics, AES, local connections (16 analogue inputs and eight outputs) and more. “Our new Quantum112 is a brilliant illustration of the idiom, ‘Good things come in small packages’,” says DiGiCo managing director Austin Freshwater. “We originally tasked our R&D team to create a rack-mountable Quantum console to replace the SD11, which is now 14 years old and they absolutely outdid themselves. Not only is the Quantum112 rackable, but it’s also small and light enough when cased to be under the magic size and weight numbers when travelling by air.” “The initial brief really challenged our team, driving us to research new materials, optimise design techniques and inversely shrink topologies while increasing performance,” confirms DiGiCo head of research and development Michael Aitchison. “Our previously smallest console, the SD11, weighs 24 kilograms without packaging and 73 kilograms when flightcased, so it wasn’t a proper flypack product. The new Quantum112 is nearly 70 percent lighter, but still incredibly solid and far more powerful. We’re extremely proud with how it has turned out and suspect that our customers will be quite pleased with it, too.” DiGiCo’s Quantum112 is expected to ship in late October of this year.Next >
