Queen’s University Belfast SARC welcomes new immersive studio installed by HHB

UK – Globally recognised institute the Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC) at Queen’s University Belfast has welcomed a brand new immersive sound facility featuring an Avid S6 M10 with MTRX, Dolby Atmos HE-RMU and Genelec 8040 + 1032 Sub monitoring set up supplied by HHB Communications.

At the centre of the new setup sits the Avid Pro Tools S6 control surface combined with Pro Tools | HD 12.8 offering comprehensive Dolby Atmos intergration. However, as some students work with several other DAWs, the additional ability to be able to control any EUCON enabled DAW made the S6 an obvious and much needed purchase to future proof the studio and accommodate all undergraduates on the many courses run at Queen’s.

Day-to-day the studios are used for a wide variety of applications including the recording of pop and classical music, electronic music production, sound design, mixing for radio and television broadcast and post production for picture.

Alongside the new immersive sound studio is the Sonic Lab, a unique multi-functional concert hall / research laboratory allowing playback of 3D and binaural audio across 48 high quality loudspeakers. The addition of the Dolby Atmos Mastering Suite with Dolby HE-RMU extends the functionality of the lab to provide a second place for students to render mixes in Dolby Atmos. It will also be possible to present Dolby Atmos content to an audience of up to 150 people.

HHB’s educational sales manager, Andrew Hingley advised and worked with Craig Jackson, technical manager at the Sonic Arts Research Centre to update their facility.

"We have made numerous equipment purchases from HHB in the past and we have always been very impressed with the technical advice and support provided. HHB have also been very good at arranging demos of equipment prior to purchase which has been extremely helpful in making informed purchase decisions," commented Craig.

As this was a very specific design the team at HHB co-ordinated the delivery and build to guarantee the facility was operational by the desired deadline. “The installation process was excellent with knowledgeable staff customising the install to specifically meet our exact requirements.” Craig added.
