Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Light: Netherlands Philharmonic Rehearses Under GDS ArcSystem

27/06/2017 - Project News

The Netherlands Built in the 1920s, the domed and eye-catching Majella church in East Amsterdam is a large, imposing building. Its design was inspired by the Byzantine churches in Palestine visited by its architect, Jan Stuyt. From the very beginning of the church's life, its sheer size presented the parish with expensive maintenance issues. Having struggled for long periods of time against a background of declining attendance and a consequent lack of funds, the last mass was held in 1992 and the church was bought by the city's restoration institution, Stadsherstel. Having first found a use hosting the Institute for Women's History, in 2012 it became home to the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and Dutch Chamber Orchestra(NedPho/NKO)). NedPho/NKO had for some time been seeking a new rehearsal space and with Stadherstel's expertise, the heart of church was altered to create an ideal facility. The space is also used for small-scale concerts, lectures and receptions and the NedPho Dome, as it is commonly known, is highly regarded as an important cultural hub.

Ambersphere Classics are Spectacular for Durham Marenghi

27/06/2017 - Production News

UK – For nearly 30 years, Durham Marenghi has been lighting Raymond Gubbay’s Classical Spectacular show. Marenghi is one of those few designers who really do not need any introduction to the reader. His designs for this production have enthralled audiences at the Royal Albert Hall for decades as he describes: “Classical Spectacular has developed from an all parcan rig with me operating on a Celco Gold to the addition of Vari*lites on an Artisan desk. I believe that we had the first Vari*lite fixtures outside of rock & roll from the VL1 upwards, through the LSD Icon control and fixtures and then on to a full automated system controlled by a grandMA from MA Lighting. Over the years we have created a massive library of musical pieces with many different rigs and the grandMA2 has converted a lot of this data into the current repertoire. I know of few other control systems that could have achieved this.”
