USA – When fans of American singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw arrive at a show of his, they can anticipate the Grammy-nominated artist to play all his hits, albeit with one notable modification: a pared-down band. Bandit Lites provided the lighting package for the production, and while previous tours elicited more of a rock show feel, the Gavin DeGRAW TOUR utilises a three-piece band to give a much more stripped back, intimate feel.

UK – Almost every year, for what is fast approaching half a century, tens of thousands and, in recent years, capacity crowds of 135,000 have descended on the tiny village of Pilton in south-west England to attend the Glastonbury Festival. The festival runs for five days and includes plenty of music on multiple stages, plus movies, dance, art, circus, theatre, and all things cultural, multicultural, and countercultural. This year, Neuron Pro Audio of Manchester, UK, handled The Temple Stage in The Common section located in the south-east Corner of Glastonbury, where they deployed Danley Sound Labs’ Pure Groove loudspeakers, Jericho Horns, Synergy Horns, Tapped Horn Subwoofers, and DNA amplifiers/DSP to thrill the five thousand-plus attendees of The Temple’s Drum & Bass, Rave, and DJ sets. Stagecore Productions, led by Steve Bedlam and Bertie Hunter, handled all technical provisions for The Common area and contracted Neuron Pro Audio. Danley UK, the distributor for the UK and Ireland, assisted.

UK – Party vibes were strong, pure and never-ending at Worthy Farm, when the 47th edition of Festivals are times to celebrate positive solutions to our earthly contemporary issues and thus ‘Stand for Forrest’ was a key message at this year’s Glastonbury’s Greenpeace Field. The huge rocket from last year was transformed into a show-stopping 20m tree, where DJs played until the early hours washed in colourful and beautiful SGM light. The huge tree came alive at night and was a must see feature this year for the 170,000 festival guests.

USA – The theme of the fourth annual EST Festival, which took place outside Cleveland 11th to 13th August, was “1970 Something,” a tribute to those unruly, hard-driving days when social inhibitions seemed to be falling like bowling pins. Early seventies' style swagger was out in full force during the two-day festival, as its founder Machine Gun Kelly and other hip-hop heavyweights like Gucci Mane tore things up with some high-powered decibels. There were even some period piece scenic elements dotting the festival grounds for atmosphere, but the Alex Kay light show that supported the onstage performances went way beyond anything anyone could ever have imagined back in the day.

Germany – The 1000th edition of Germany’s hugely popular children’s TV show 1, 2 oder 3 aired in July, and Green Hippo and mo2 design helped ensure it looked suitably impressive. Based on the original US version, which was called Runaround, those in the UK may be familiar with the UK show, which went out in the 70s and 80s under that same original US title. The success of the German show has outstripped that of any of its ‘siblings’ seeing it become a mainstay of German childhood TV watching.

NEXT-proaudio, being aware of the moving heavy loads issue, has added to its Subwoofer options, the LAs418G, a new ground stack version of the current well known subwoofer LAs418. The actual version of LAs418 allows the user to array the sub with optional external hardware, having all the internal box rigging hardware. On this new ground stack version, there is no possibility to array it, which is not a requirement for some users so allows a substantial weight reduction but keeping the same design and performance. LAs418G houses two long excursion and very high power 18" drivers providing the same ultra-low frequencies at a very high SPL and delivering magnificent precision and punch at incredible sound pressure levels.

Canada – During the last quarter of the 19th century, German-speaking Mennonites from Russia began settling the area around what is now the city of Winkler in south-eastern Manitoba, about 75 miles south-west of Winnipeg and a dozen miles north of Cavalier County, North Dakota. UK – As Clean Bandit continue their touring progress towards a transatlantic sojourn in the USA in the autumn, it seems an appropriate moment to consider the merits of Rob Sinclair’s production design. In particular, the unique constructions that inhabit the upstage area from left to right, manufactured by specialist show and event design house, Specialz Ltd. These pods are four metres high with eight VDO Sceptron 10 fixtures in each pod. Each one is rigged on a stand that enables the pod to be rotated 360° to be either facing downstage or at 45° degrees making them all but invisible to the audience.

USA – Founded in 1885, Second Baptist Church in Springfield, Missouri has moved, built, and rebuilt numerous sanctuaries in the 130-plus years of service to the Springfield community. It completed its current 1,000-seat sanctuary in the mid-1990s. When recent failures further exposed the shortcomings of what had been an unsatisfying sound reinforcement system from the start, Second Baptist turned to A/V integration firm Sandor Sound Services. Sandor designed and installed a new complement of Danley Sound Labs SH-96 and SH-95 loudspeakers, whose precision pattern control and high fidelity (even at high SPLs) give the church everything it had been hoping for. Moreover, the Danley boxes’ small footprint and optional white finish effectively let them disappear visually.

UK – Romsey Abbey is a magnificent 12th century church, the largest parish church in Hampshire and home to a vibrant congregation. It has also been used as a performance venue by Music in Romsey (MIR) since the early 1970s. MIR hosts an extensive series of concerts there throughout the year. Musicians involved range from local choirs and bands to international soloists and orchestras. However, the group has always struggled to 'raise' their performers due to a lack of any special staging.
Three JTE Roofs in a Row at Kent State University

USA – Kent State University chose three, side-by-side James Thomas Engineering PRT roof structures for their recent commencement ceremony. PRT systems are James Thomas Engineering Pre-Rig Super Truss roof systems with 38.1mm (15 inch) towers. They measure 12.2 x 12.2 metres (40 x 40 feet), with the centre roof having an additional mid-stage span. The structures are tied together with Pre-Rig SuperTruss, which forms the sound bays. USA – Two iconic bands, American duo Daryl Hall & John Oates and English pop band Tears for Fears, united for a joint tour that had the trans-Atlantic pairing touring North America through July beneath a rig that included Elation Professional lighting effects. The lighting design team of Matt Geasey and Jesper Luth used Elation’s ACL 360 Roller and Cuepix Blinder series fixtures in the design for the Hall & Oates performance while Tears for Fears lighting designer Alex Reardon is one of the first anywhere to use Elation’s new Chorus Line 16 pixel bar wash luminaire.

Moldova – Elation dealer Eventika Grup SRL of Moldova recently finished an interesting project that the company worked long and hard to complete. After the USSR collapsed, the circus in the town of Chisinau, Moldova, disintegrated along with it, leaving behind a large circus building that had the potential to be an excellent performance space. After years of laying idle, Eventika was able to partially restore the building on their own, without foreign investment, and held a 20th anniversary tribute concert at the venue for the Moldavian rock band Gindul Mitei (Cat’s Thoughts).

USA – Leading New York City-based national concert promoter The Bowery Presents (TBP) recently opened its latest live music venue, Brooklyn Steel, a new 20,000-square-foot space in East Williamsburg, New York that is fitted out with L-Acoustics K2 line arrays, plus delays and stage monitors. A gantry crane retained from the former steel fabrication business enables the flown arrays to be repositioned, along with the movable 50,000-pound steel and concrete stage, to scale the audience area according to the expected attendance at each show.

Worldwide – Hans Zimmer is one of the world’s most renown film score composers. He has written over 100 scores, including those for Rain Man, Driving Miss Daisy, The Lion King, Gladiator, As Good As It Gets and The Last Samurai and has been nominated for seven Golden Globes, seven Grammys and seven Oscars. It is medleys from this incredible collection of work that the music for his current tour is selected. UK – When lighting designer Cate Carter first conjured with Elbow appearing at the Barclaycard Summer Time (BST) annual concert series in Hyde Park this year she was immediately presented with two dilemmas. “One was the sheer scale of the stage, that enormous wall of LED screen cannot be ignored,” she said. Supplied by Video Design, the wall has, since last year, been extended from centre stage across and right down the outside edges of the PA wings. Wrapping the entire performance platform, it measures200 feet across and 35 high, a total 650sq/m of 9mm.

USA – Housed in a new, 70-foot-tall, 54,000-square-foot building designed by local architect William Murray of Pfeiffer Partners, Inc., University of Southern California's $46 million Glorya Kaufman International School of Dance features a large performance studio, four medium dance studios, and one upper division studio. To ensure that the audio and video systems met Pfeiffer Partner's quality standards and the University's functional expectations, Pfeiffer Partners, Inc., hired San Luis Obispo, California, electro-acoustic consultant Rick Wells of Multi-Media Consulting, Inc. Wells designed, and ProSound installed, a system based on Renkus-Heinz loudspeakers using a scalable system concept that is custom-configured for the specialised needs of each space.
