Dan+Shay Obsessed with Robe
26/09/2017 - Production News
USA – Country music duo Dan + Shay (vocalists and songwriters Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney) are engaged in an extensive touring cycle following the success of their second studio album, “Obsessed,” released in June 2016.
Lighting is designed, programmed and operated for them by Jeff Mathews of Borealis Stage Lighting in Nashville, Tennessee, and includes Robe Spiider, Spikie and Pointe moving lights. Jeff has been working with the artists for about 18 months and with shows in venues of all types, shapes and sizes, the core touring lighting rig is designed as a dynamic and flexible specials package which can be brought in ‘under’ the various house rigs.
It was one of various creative options that Jeff pitched to Dan + Shay and chosen as the best concept to work for the combination of headline gigs and festival support slots that they will be playing until the end of 2017 and into 2018. They are a band certainly not shy of touring and getting ‘out there’ for their fans!
The entire lighting rig is deployed via four custom set carts designed by Jeff and fabricated by Accurate Staging in Nashville. They added some cool features like gas pistons for lift-assists and a neat gearbox drive system that determines whether the cart is going up or down and keeps carts from rising up inside the trailer.
The set carts are rigged with LED panels in a diamond orientation, with bars of LED video across them also in a diamond shape. Each has three diamond frames, complete with video diamonds and video bars, which hang between the carts once on stage.
Across the top of the carts is a row of eight Robe Pointes, used for the upstage spot / beam specials which produce a wide range of looks and effects throughout the show.
Nine Spiiders alternate at the top and bottom of the rig as the main wash fixtures. “They are also fast and intense, with great color saturation and many “cool gags” that can be pulled out when necessary,” commented Jeff.
Four Spikies are located across the mid-stage risers with another four across the edge of the stage, so when Jeff wants a look with multiple broken-up beams he uses these very effectively in combination with the central LED / flower effect of the Spiider. He finds the inbuilt patterns on the Spiiders are ideal for disrupting the beams and keeping the looks different and fresh.
As the main spot / beam fixture, he uses the power of the Pointe juxtaposed against any larger profiles lights that they might encounter on the house rigs.
While zoomed out, the Spiider functions superbly as the principal wash light, the flexibility of the zoom itself also makes them into a good beam option.
The Spikies provide additional general aerial eye-candy, while the beam, prism and flower effects are used to enhance aerial breakup looks.
Spiiders were picked because Jeff “really likes the direction Robe has taken in recent years”. So when he heard that lighting vendor 4Wall had them available, he jumped at the opportunity.
He loves the large face of the Spiider, the colour saturation, zoom range, pattern and flower modes. And, as the lighting and video package incorporated KlingNet for pixel mapping, the Spiider was a must-have!
The two types of LED video fixture on the rig – tiles and bars – are also all pixel-mapped via KlingNet using Arkaos MediaMaster which, he observes, does an “incredible job” of puling everything together.
He appreciates the saturated colours that the Spiider can create, thinks the pure white is “beautiful” and that the incandescent emulation is “convincing”, and very useful as many song looks are composed from an amalgam of different colour temperature whites. He also finds the CTO functions realistic and useful. Spikies were used on Dan + Shay’s previous tour in the same format, where they added depth and dimensionality to the set. Rather than just having a flat wall of light, they brought a layering of beams and washes, to the mid-stage and downstage. Since they are low profile with a tiny footprint as well as being “surprisingly bright”, they hold up well against the ambient lighting coming off the video panels and support the Pointes fluidly when in beam mode. The low power consumption is another bonus.
Jeff has been using Pointes “religiously” since they were launched in 2013, and they have been featured on almost every design he’s created since then. He loves the small size, speed, brightness, the great colours and interesting gobo package. “It’s a great beam, a great profile and, with the frost, also a wash!” he declared.
His biggest challenge in lighting Dan + Shay is the range of musical sounds and styles a typical set contains, from feel-good country crowd-pleasers to smash pop hits, to good old hard-driving rock & roll, so any lighting rig had to be adaptable and offer plenty of scope.
The other challenges were the amount of trailer space available and – as is often the case – time.
Playing around 50% headliners and 50% festival supports, it was vital that the lighting package could be rigged quickly and cleared off the deck within 10-15 minutes of the set finishing, leaving enough time for the next act to get their backline set up and any extras on.
Luckily, with the way this rig was designed from the outset, none of this has been a problem. The quickest de-rig and offstage time to date has been just eight minutes Jeff revealed proudly!
On the most recent leg of the tour they travelled in two buses each towing a trailer, so designing a set cart to be deployed quickly and look large – 36ft. wide and 20 deep – on stage was most definitely a brain-teaser!
With the assistance of Accurate Staging, Borealis Stage Lighting found the ultimate solution that looked fantastic and packed down into a 16ft trailer.
4Wall Nashville are the main tour lighting vendor, with Borealis Stage Lighting providing all the video elements – LED video tiles and bars, ArKaos media server, processing, etc, plus the ChamSys MQ80 console Jeff is using to run all the lights and trigger the playback video cues.
Jeff thinks Robe is “doing some very cool things right now,” bringing some interesting technology to the table, and he’s really excited to see what’s coming next.

Prolyte Group supplies LiteDeck to Fruition Events LLC
26/09/2017 - Production News
Middle East – With the delivery of a large batch of over 500 LiteDeck staging platforms, Prolyte Group and Fruition Events LLC embark on a fruitful co-operation in the Middle East region.
Prolyte Group will deliver the LiteDeck staging elements in two batches, the first to be completed in September, just in time for the start of the season in the Middle East region. The second to complete later in October.
Fruition Events aims to become a recognised event delivery partner in the Middle East region.
They choose to achieve this through continuous investment into a world-class team of industry professionals and sustainable product lines that can meet creative challenges. They focus on offering a professional and full-service infrastructure for the events sector. Fruition Events has extensive regional experience and can boast varied strategic partnerships, guaranteeing expertise and knowledge.
“Investigating the opportunity of local production with the Prolyte Group fulfilled our commitment to not only invest into a sustainable product line, but also to enhance availability in the UAE market. Prolyte Group manufactures leading products, which are widely recognised and used across the globe. LiteDeck offers a clean aesthetic look in comparison to existing steel products, whilst retaining simple functionality and creative design principles. Coupled with the extensive backup of the Prolyte network, we will have the added capability of developing special components locally, to meet the demands of the most creative deliveries. Fruition Events further commits to invest into Prolyte Group products to strengthen both brands in the MENA region. This set-up will further ensure availability of the products for use by other Prolyte users,” comments Warren Barlow, managing director of Fruition Events.
Lars Toonen, Prolyte Group Sales Representative, adds: “This new co-operation offers an excellent networking opportunity for this region. By creating a large rental stock, backed by short lead times and direct availability, we now have a platform to service events as well as dry rental solutions and sales opportunities.”
LiteDeck is most popular for demanding touring productions or events, it has been tried and tested extensively. While the welded side profiles give the stage platform a modern and rock & roll style look, they also provide ultimate strength. Combined with the hard birch plywood top the deck offers ultimate durability; the top plate can easily be removed for maintenance or repair and can be used on both sides.
The LiteDeck system is available in a wide range of shapes and sizes, allowing hundreds of stage configurations to be created from a relatively narrow stock of standard components.
Bringing their intention to invest in sustainable product lines only, Prolyte Group and Fruition Events worked on a special route-to-market.
The LiteDeck frames are manufactured under licence by Talex, a UAE-based company. Talex is a Middle East based extrusion plant, specialised in precision engineered aluminium products. Assembling the products locally will reduce the ecological footprint caused by shipping finalised products.
“Seeing a growing demand in the region, we have been anticipating to cope with this. By outsourcing the manufacturing process to finished product to a local company we not only reduce shipping volume and lead times, but we also keep the benefits of locally producing in the region,” states Ralph Stockley, Prolyte Group CCO.
To safeguard the renowned high-quality fitting of the LiteDecks, special welding jigs were developed at the Prolyte Group HQ in the Netherlands and shipped to Abu Dhabi. Johann Stuut, R&D engineer for Prolyte Group, and responsible for the development of the welding jigs, states: “Every phase of the production process is thought over and captured by the design of the jig, you just have to follow the process. This will guarantee the original Prolyte shape and quality fitting in the production of the unique LiteDeck frames.”

Atlona Appoints Alex Moss to Newly Created Senior Sales Manager Position
25/09/2017 - People News
UK – AV collaboration and control leader Atlona has strengthened its UK and Ireland sales team with the appointment of industry veteran Alex Moss as senior sales manager. Reporting to Atlona general manager Ronni Guggenheim, Alex will leverage his broad industry expertise to support sales initiatives across end users, partners and systems integrators as he works to expand the company’s regional presence.
Alex’s trajectory has followed parallel sales and technology paths through much of his nearly ten years in commercial AV industry. Since late 2013 until joining Atlona on 1st October, Alex held technical sales consultant and sales manager positions at various times with Cabletime, a leading manufacturer of IPTV, digital signage and media distribution products. In the latter position, he nurtured business development and direct customer relationships with the company’s entire UK/Ireland end user base, working to consolidate projects through the company’s distribution channels – a key focus of Alex’s new Atlona role.
Prior to his four years at Cabletime, Alex worked across several sales and technology specialist roles at True Colours Distribution Ltd., which serves the technical AV solutions division of Midwich, a UK-based distributor and Atlona partner. Collectively, his wealth of technical experience provides Atlona with an invaluable resource that has a strong awareness of how industry trends align with customer needs.
“With the addition of AVoIP, control and wireless collaboration, Atlona’s product offering has evolved toward a full solutions-oriented approach,” said Guggenheim. “The sales process has therefore grown more demanding as we cover a broader scope in commercial AV installations. Alex brings the relevant background and experience of complex systems sales, and working with end users and systems integrator – both qualities that Atlona needs to continue its growth momentum throughout the UK and Ireland. His arrival also underlines our commitment to the channel and support of systems integrators in the successful implementation of Atlona solutions, and expansion of Atlona’s market presence.”
Alex notes that his experience across all AV verticals, including corporate, education, government and stadiums, gives him a natural understanding of where and how Atlona’s growing portfolio of solutions ideally fit each unique project.
“With the OmniStream AV over IP family and the Velocity networked control platform coming to market, Atlona continues to move into emerging business areas with innovations that the commercial industry craves, but for which customers have had limited choices of partners who offer a whole solution,” said Moss. “As Atlona provides healthy disruption to the norm and keeps the market competitive, there is an enormous potential to change mindsets and develop new business opportunities across the always rapidly changing AV industry.”

Fabulous at 40 – PLASA Show celebrates successful return to West London
25/09/2017 - Event News
UK – The 40th anniversary of the PLASA Show saw its refocused direction paying dividends, with an increase in visitor numbers, a sold-out show floor and a 25% increase in the number of audio companies exhibiting. Exhibitors reported continually busy stands and a high quality of visitor across all three days, with a particular increase in the number of international attendees, whilst visitors were pleased with the number of brand new products on show and the content rich seminar programme.
“The quality of the people was bang on,” says Mick Hannaford from the Show’s Platinum sponsor, Robe. “The amazing thing from our point of view was the amount of lighting designers attending, especially on the Sunday, and not just from the UK, but mainland Europe, too. It was a really impressive. Undoubtedly, the move back to West London is making that happen. Every time I looked, there were lots of conversations going on around the show floor. I think every exhibitor should be happy. It was magic!”
Emphasising the increased appeal for the audio sector was the number of new products launched at the show, which included Harman’s Vi1000 digital mixing console on the stand of its UK distributor Sound Technology Ltd, Adamson’s IS-Series installation loudspeakers and KV2 Audio’s VHD 2.18J subwoofer. On the SSE Audio Group stand there was a line-up of new products on display including the recently launched DiGiCo SD12 digital mixing console and Sennheiser Digital 6000 Series microphones, Speechline Digital Wireless conference system and XS Wireless 1 and 2 vocal microphone sets.
“We’ve been exhibiting at PLASA for around ten years and have built our stand as an audio village. We feature a selection of the manufacturers we work closely with and they all bring their latest technology to the show,” says SSE Audio’s managing director John Penn. “By sharing a big space and resources, we can display a good cross section of products. We show both competing and complementary technologies, allowing our customers to see the differences between them and no one feels they’re getting the hard sell. It works very well.”
In the Audio Demo room, visitors could listen to 15 minute demonstrations of a variety of leading loudspeaker systems including Bose Professional’s new compact yet versatile ShowMatch DeltaQ line-array system, as well as systems from Aura Audio, KV2 Audio, Shermann Audio and TiMAX.
New offerings in lighting included Robe’s MegaPointe multi-purpose moving light, City Theatrical’s new DMXcat controller, three new lighting essentials from CLF – the Yara, Ares XS and LEDwash XL – and the Maverik MK2 Profile from Chauvet Professional. High End Systems launched its new SolaFrame 750 automated luminaire, Artistic Licence its DMX-Protect, and Elation Professional the Artiste Dali, a full-featured moving head with state-of-the-art LED / Laser Phosphor light engine and the Dartz 360, a full colour-mixing LED beam/spot fixture with gobos and effects.
“The show was genuinely good and there was a buzz there,” concurs Chauvet’s UK general manager, Cliff Dounting. “From a UK perspective, it has been very positive. We certainly had a crowded stand and we hope the success of the launch of the new products brings the results we want. May PLASA continue for many more years.”
ETC had its trade show debut of the recently launched Ion Xe lighting desks and the soon-to-be released ColorSource Cyc fixture, GDS launched three new products – the Décor Range or architectural lighting, the D48 4-way driver, the ArcLamp Flicker – and announced the creation of GDS Korea. Eaton expanded its award-winning Zero 88 FLX range with two powerful, all-new lighting control consoles, with the FLX S24 and FLX S48 on show. UK distributor Ambersphere had the world debut of the Ghibli from Ayrton, and Claypaky showed the Axcor Profile 900 and the K-EYE HCR, plus the Oz and the Alice from Robert Juliat. Other notable product launches included Ten 47’s Powerline QC connector, whilst rigging, suspension and lifting equipment manufacturer Doughty Engineering unveiled a new version of its popular Space Saver.
“Our Flicker Lamp candle and Décor Range were really well received,” says Matthew Lloyd, GDS managing director. “And we were delighted that 80% of our European distribution network came to the show, and we had visitors from Korea, Hong Kong and the US. The stand was really busy and we’ve thoroughly enjoyed the show.”
“The show was incredibly busy, I didn’t have a moment of quiet time,” adds Darren Beckley, sales manager, ETC Ltd. “I’ve seen more international visitors here this year, which is great. I love it!”
PLASA’s seminars are always an important element of the show. Bring Me The Horizon go on UK arena tour with d&b J-Series
25/09/2017 - Production News
UK – Sheffield-based Bring Me the Horizon (BMTH), comprising vocalist Oliver Sykes, guitarist Lee Malia, bassist Matt Kean, drummer Matt Nicholls and keyboardist Jordan Fish, embarked on their first arena tour of the UK in the latter part of 2016. The tour came in the wake of a year of successes for the band, during which they released a fifth LP ‘That’s The Spirit’ and played just before Metallica on the main stage at the Reading and Leeds Festivals.
Kicking off at Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena, the tour represented the band’s largest gig to date. It saw other live shows played in Birmingham’s Barclaycard Arena, London’s O2, Sheffield Motorpoint Arena, and Manchester Arena, before wrapping up at Glasgow SSE Hydro.
d&b has long been a fixture at BMTH gigs, with the technology a favourite of front of house engineer Oliver Hutchinson, particularly the subs and the overall high quality of sound delivered.
“I am a huge fan of d&b and would happily never use another system ever again,” said Hutchinson. “It’s the only PA that can deliver what I want from all frequency bands; the crystal clear clarity of the highs, the low punch of the mids, and the note perfect reproduction of the sub programme material. No other sub manages to reproduce all the notes of our sub bass tracks with such an even response combined with such trouser flapping power. With other systems, I find myself riding the notes to accommodate the lumpy and uneven sub response. Some of them just produce a flappy rumble resembling nothing like the audio I feed into them.”
BMTH, whose style ranges from deathcore through to metalcore, to rock, are known for their sound, which is central to every gig. With this arena tour the band stepped things up both in terms of aesthetics and visuals. As Jack Murphy, system technician at Wigwam/SSE (which supplied all the gear for the gigs) explains, he and Oliver Hutchinson wanted to make sure that sound didn’t get left behind, - retaining the impact that was achieved in smaller venues – or overshadowed by the video running on multi-tiered video screens off to the sides, as well as a larger screen wrapped across the back of the stage.
It was also critical that Hutchinson was able to get the sound he was after, while avoiding huge hangs of PAs that would interfere with the visuals. Murphy was brought onboard early in the process by production manager Rob Highcroft with the brief of making sure the PA was not in the sightlines of the 36m wide, 11m high video screen.
Murphy said: “To achieve the brief I spoke to d&b’s application support team. They suggested looking at placing the L/R flown subs equidistant from both main and side hangs. This made it easy to time align both the sides and the mains back to the flown subs creating one big source. This created a tight low end even around the sides and meant that everyone got the trouser wobbling sub BMTH like to give.”
The setup worked better than expected. According to Murphy, there were positive comments from management, friends, and family saying that they could really feel the sound up the bleachers and in the boxes. “Hutch and I were very happy that every fan got the same experience,” he adds.
The FoH setup also included eight J-INFRA subwoofers and fourteen J-SUBs hidden in an array under the stage to achieve a low end impact, which is the band’s preferred option.
Murphy goes on to explain that the band also like being above the sub array, which really brings the feeling to them. On top of this monitoring engineer, Jared Daly had sidefills of J8 and two additional J-SUBs per side and two J-SUBs under the band’s risers.
With its detailed audio performance, smooth and even frequency response, dynamic bandwidth and high power and headroom capability, the d&b J-Series is an ideal large scale sound reinforcement solution. The J-SUB offers the option of cardioid or hypercardioid performance and are acoustically matched and constructed so they are compatible in both flown or ground stacked arrays. The J-INFRA cardioid subwoofer extends the frequency response even lower.
The capability of the J-Series means there is little need for additional processing, as Murphy explains: “I don’t use any processors at all, no Lakes or Galileos,I don’t think it’s necessary. Once you’ve got your tonal balance tools set up, your HFCs and your coupling filters and perhaps a bit of EQ, you don’t need much else. There’s so much EQ available on the D80s that there’s not any need for anything else to be in the line. With a good network that runs super quick, there’s never any issue even though there’s no ArrayProcessing in this particular set-up.”
For the O2 gig, Murphy refined the system designs for the height – with no problems encountered with a lowest edge of 11m, paying particular attention to getting the design as good as possible to achieve great, consistent and even results. The adjustments worked a treat, with The Independent review stating that the sound was big for the enormous O2 room.
As Murphy explains, they had to side anchor to cover the seats in the upper tiers. The rig was designed to work with the stage design, so in that sense the setup didn’t really change too much, it was just a case of making adjustments to ensure that the impact could be felt across the whole audience, regardless of location.

ZerOS RigSync Wins PLASA Innovation Award
22/09/2017 - Event News
UK – Eaton’s popular Zero 88 lighting control brand continues its winning ways by collecting a coveted PLASA (Professional Lighting & Sound Association) 2017 ‘Award for Innovation’ for the cool and inventive ‘RigSync’ feature, a feature available with the latest version of its powerful and flexible ZerOS console software.
RigSync demystifies the work of DMX addressing for console users, allowing them more time to focus on being imaginative, while the technical elements sort themselves out via the console communicating with the lighting rig.
The judges commented: “RigSync opens up lighting creativity opportunities for non-technical people in an entry-level environment.”
The PLASA Awards for Innovation aim to recognise and reward new product ideas, and are independently judged by a task-force of industry specialists.
Perfect for multiple scenarios, RigSync automatically ensures the console and the rig are – and remain – continuously synchronised, effectively invisibly solving potential ‘disputes’ like duplicate DMX addresses or change in fixture modes.
“We live in a world where smartphones assist in accomplishing numerous complex tasks very straightforwardly on a daily basis,” explained Eaton’s product manager for entertainment, Jon Hole.
“We adopted this same philosophy and approach to developing RigSync, which doesn’t just read the lighting rig or patch the console, it manages the set-up with no interaction required at all from the user making the process simple, enjoyable and stress free!”
For a large percentage of small to medium-sized shows and events and venues, technicians and operators do not need to be involved or concerned about specifics like DMX addresses, as long as their fixtures are functioning correctly. As any active practitioner in the performance and entertainment industry knows, the whole process of assigning DMX channels can come late on in the show’s technical periods when everyone, including console programmers and LDs, are under pressure. RigSync deals very eloquently with this scenario.
Incompatibilities in DMX addressing are automatically fixed and settings like modes and alignments are kept in sync between the console and the rig.
It is the first implementation of DMX, RDM and ArtRDM in a lighting console that allows the installer or operator – if desired – to be oblivious to the ongoing technical process.
New fixtures are added automatically to the system, with ZerOS assigning the settings and adjusting other fixtures to ensure the rig stays working, with fixtures not supporting RDM avoided rather than ignored.
RigSync will only change settings when it is necessary to make the rig work. Once the show is over, the rig can be reverted back to its original settings, so venues receiving tours are as they were with their house systems.
RigSync can also be disabled for each console output to avoid issues on lower spec kit where DMX or RDM specifications are not accurately implemented.
Utilising RigSync removes all these time-consuming and potentially unnecessary steps as well as making the art of lighting control more accessible and enjoyable for new or occasional users.
This is the second PLASA Innovation Award that Cwmbran, Wales based Zero 88 has won in two years, adding to 2015’s recognition of the new FLX lighting console.
“We are absolutely delighted to have won another Innovation Award so soon,” stated Zero 88 general manager David Catterall. “We believe in making lighting control affordable, straightforward and fun, and this is a great example of ingenuity from which many people will benefit.”
The Award was presented at the end of the second day of the 2017 PLASA trade show at Olympia in London.
At this year’s expo, Zero 88 launched two powerful, all-new FLX lighting control consoles designed for applications where space, time, ease of use and flexibility are key factors – the FLX S24 and FLX S48.
Winning the innovation Award was a fantastic bonus to a busy and successful show for the Zero 88 team.
