USA – It was a glamorous evening of icons, legends and laughter at The Black Music Honours, where attendees at the Andrew Jackson Hall celebrated African American artists who have made significant music contributions to African American culture and American music worldwide. Bandit Lites supplied the lighting package for the two-hour recorded special which featured Rickey Smiley and LeToya Luckett as co-hosts.

Honourees were Oleta Adams, Jody Watley, Donnie McClurkin, Slick Rick and GUY with The Jackson’s receiving the Lifetime Achievement in Music Award. Featured performers included Jonathan Butler, Leela James, Avery Sunshine, KID N PLAY, Karen Clark Sheard, Marvin Winans, Latrice Crawford, SWV and Dave Hollister.

Lighting designer Mark Carver explained how Central City Productions sought a “very classy yet contemporary look.”

“The musical content of the show showcased various music styles throughout the decades and it was our job to try to complement these very diverse styles,” he said.

Carver utilised Martin MAC Vipers for both set texture and to create camera friendly air effects, while GLP X4 Bar 10 fixtures created a perimeter for the upstage video wall. Robe Robin 600s and GLP X4’s covered overall colour presence and toning.

“The Rogue 1 Hybrids were a very versatile fixture used to create air effects in the haze while looking dynamic on camera,” added Carver. “I was very happy with this fixture and the versatility it represents.”

Bandit also supplied GLP X4S, Bandit’s exclusive GRNLite Washes and a grandMA 2 Full console for control.

“Mark has an incredible vision and he managed to work his magic once again at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center,” said Bandit vice president Mike Golden.

Carver shared how the entire Bandit team contributed to making the show a success, especially noting how Mike Golden and Project Manager Don Lockridge provided a package that both met the spec and was well prepared. “On site, Chaz Martin and Adam McIntosh executed the design in a very timely manner and on schedule with the help of Gaffer Buddy Lunn,” Carver said. “Susan Rose took care of board operation for the moving package and Chaz Martin operated the Catalyst system for media content with Andrew Heid operating house conventional lighting. All three helped in creating unique lighting looks for the various styles and artist represented in the content of the show.”

The show can currently be seen in broadcast syndication through 30th September and will also air on Bounce TV 10th October at 7pm. EST.
