Italy – In 2015, die-hard Foo Fighters fan Fabio Zaffagnini gathered 1,000 musicians to record a video appeal to the band to come and play in his home town of Cesena (Italy), in which “Rockin’1000” sang the US band’s “Learn to Fly” in a local park. The video went viral and FF front man Dave Grohl replied, accepting the invitation. The Cesena gig was followed by the first Rockin’1000 concert by the huge band at Cesena stadium (2016) and a Summer Camp, at Mont Blanc (2017).

UK – Highlite International BV has had a very successful PLASA show where it was present with three booths. One stand was dedicated entirely to the current Infinity range fixtures with the Robert Juliat collaboration Infinity Signature LED theatre spots as show-stoppers. BSR E1.53, a revision of ANSI E1.53-2016, Overhead mounting of luminaires, lighting accessories, and other portable devices: specification and practice, has been posted for public review on the ESTA website at http://estalink.us/pr. The standard covers specifications for the primary and secondary mounting devices for portable stage and studio luminaires and accessories (e.g., c-clamps and safety cables). It also covers their use. The existing standard is being revised to clarify marking requirements and environmental considerations. Comments are due before 20th November.

Meyer Sound Systems Add Intimacy and Impact to Dr. Atomic at Santa Fe Opera

USA – With this past summer’s acclaimed production by the Santa Fe Opera, 73 years after the first blinding nuclear detonation, Dr. Atomic finally came home. This 2005 contemporary opera by composer John Adams and librettist Peter Sellars centres on the inner turmoil of Dr. Robert Oppenheimer as he headed development of the first atomic bomb at Los Alamos Laboratories, situated barely 20 miles from the opera’s Crosby Theatre. In order to create a three-dimensional soundscape for the production deftly balancing natural-sounding singing with full orchestration and evocative sound effects, eminent sound designer Mark Grey specified an augmented Meyer Sound loudspeaker system based around four CAL column array loudspeakers that had been recently installed at the theatre.

UK – The Great North Star performance in Newcastle was the grand finale to the Great Exhibition of the North. Televised on the BBC, this ambitious outdoor performance celebrated pioneering women through sporting history. The event took place outside The Sage Gateshead, with the Tyne and cityscape providing the backdrop to the night time performance. IPS provided all the lighting and sound production, along with the production structures for a long standing client, with Andy Marshall heading up the IPS on site team, working with production manager Nigel Mousley and director Bradley Hemmings. Over 400 lighting fixtures we used on the production, almost all of them from the IP rated range of the IPS hire inventory. A 100m running track provided the performance area for the event, with scenic specialist Stage One supplying the stage structure and impressive set pieces (including working crane), with IPS working alongside to integrate show lighting within the set. Electric Foundry supplied LED practicals built into the set, including the illuminated text on the I-Beam lifted by the crane as part of the performance.
