But the bitter New England winter wind notwithstanding, the mood at the multi-stage Birds of a Feather Festival was as carefree as a summer beach party. Thousands of fans crammed inside the 90-year-old Worcester Palladium for four straight hours of jam and alt rock sounds on Friday 25th January, and although summer vibes resonated throughout the building, the reality was that being indoors, Birds of a Feather offered no visual variety beyond the stage.

Tempest Gets Zen with Latest Enclosure

Tempest has announced the launch of its Zen enclosures, the latest family of Tempest’s world-beating noise-attenuating Hush Boxes for projectors from 10,000-30,000 ANSI lumens. Zen is fully self-contained, with no external air ducts, making it much easier to install, especially in historic buildings such as theatres and concert halls, where new ductwork may not be possible. Innovative variable-speed fan control and internal baffle design delivers noise attenuation around 25dBA for most projector types, and the user can tune the system for a preferred trade-off between acoustic and cooling performance.

USA – Martin Audio’s new Wavefront Precision Longbow (WPL) system was recently purchased by two US-based live event production companies, Soundworks in Richmond, VA and Southard Audio in Mount Crawford, VA, the first to acquire the breakthrough large format line array worldwide. Taiwan – The third floor of Taipei’s Nan Shan Plaza, the second tallest skyscraper in Taipei after Taipei 101, has been created as a vast and open exhibition space. With ceilings at an impressive 8.5 metres in height, the venue occupies a total of 56 square metres but, features no beams or support columns, creating a challenge to any sound design proposal.

UK – December saw the ninth year of Huawei Technologies’ sponsorship of the London Winter Concert, held at London’s Royal Festival Hall (RFH) in aid of the Prince’s Trust charity. This spectacular event featured the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, conducted by Paul Bateman, and had a line-up led by tenor Joseph Calleja, with special guests soprano He Wu and young singing talent Beau Dermott. Although the Winter Concert is long-established in the RFH calendar, this year saw a completely new approach to audio production, with L-ISA Hyperreal Sound delivering an extra frisson to proceedings.

UK – London-born singer-songwriter and composer, Ben Howard, released his debut EP ten years ago. Since then, he has won two BRIT Awards, been nominated for both the Ivor Novello Award and the Mercury Prize and had a number one album. His third album, Noonday Dream, was released in June of last year, and has received much critical acclaim. Now, he is out on the road touring it, with FOH engineer, Andy Magee, and monitor engineer, Niccolo Antonietti, both working from DiGiCo SD5 consoles.

An impressive highlight of LWSB is its 2,500-seat outdoor amphitheatre, where the Clair Brothers kiTCurve12 loudspeaker system was recently installed by Tim Metzger of TMAV Consulting & Integration and Ben Frederick of Production Access Group. Frederick explains: “Tim and I chose the kiTCurve12 because we had both heard them before and knew what they could do sonically for the size of box. Based on existing lifts at the venue, we had a set horizontal position that was quite wide, but after placing them in EASE Focus, we were pleasantly surprised at the even coverage and that we were able to both hit the front row and keep as much of the sound in the seats and not bleeding out to the surrounding community. This also removed our need for front fills or a centre fill.”
RCF HDL 30-A Line Array System Proves its Class 500 Metres Under the Earth

Germany – At a concert of the Queen tribute band "MerQury" in Merkers, Thuringia, the Line Array System HDL 30-A from RCF proved its quick and easy install and the delivery of perfect sound even under extreme conditions. Merkers adventure mine offers a whole range of special features. A former large bunker for potash salt at a depth of 500 metres serves as the "concert hall". With its hose-like shape (22 metres wide and 15-17 metres high), at a length of 250 metres and walls made of bare rock, this bunker truly holds some challenges for bands and sound managers. The worldwide touring band "MerQury" builds on a strong fan base and so the concert was sold out weeks before, and expectations were high. To master these challenges, PVS Jena, the event service provider in charge, used RCF's active two-way line array system HDL 30-A, which PVS Jena recently added to its rental park. Other RCF components used were SUB 9007, SUB 9004, TT22-A front fills, TT052-A lip fills and two 2 TT22-A in two delay lines.

White Light Keeps the American Clock Ticking at Old Vic

UK – The American Clock portrays the devastation that American citizens experienced when the stock market crashed and the Great Depression began in 1929. The play uses an ensemble cast to explore the lives of several families across several cities. It is directed by the renowned Rachel Chavkin and features a lighting design by Olivier Award-winning Natasha Chivers. Natasha comments: “This is an epic play that manages to tell a huge story about an entire nation. Rachel wanted to create something quite extraordinary in which we put the audience right into this extraordinary time in American history. Part of this included having audience members on stage. What this means is that the Old Vic stage has now been turned so that it’s practically in-the-round. When I’ve lit shows here before it’s always been end-on so this was a new experience for me. My brief then became to ensure I adapted my design to the space and that the lighting was strong from both sides.”

USA – With its arched columned doorways and peaked roofs, the First Baptist Church of San Antonio’s campus is reminiscent of early Texas architecture. The church moved into this stately building in the early 1900s, but its roots actually stretch back much further, all the way to 1861, only 16 years after Texas became a state, when a group of 13 worshippers formed a congregation in what was then a remote trading outpost.

UK – Doughty Engineering will be bringing its new Fifty Clamp to BVE in London for the first time this year. The clamp will make its show debut on stand E30. Mark Chorley, design engineer at Doughty said: "We hope our customers in the broadcast industry will see the Fifty Clamp as a welcome addition to our existing range. Our Twenty Clamp is one of our best sellers and we realised that a clamp that could take an additional 30kg would be a bit of a game changer.” The Fifty Clamp which is available to order has TUV approval, a SWL of 50kg and has been designed to fit tube diameter 38mm - 51mm. It is made from pressure die cast aluminium which prevents damage to thin wall truss. It is captive with M10 or M12 bolts and comes supplied with an M10 fixing kit.

Poland – On 14th October, 2018, at Warsaw's PGE National Stadium, confectionery giant, Kinder, celebrated its 50th anniversary in style. The all-day event culminated in the Koncert Pełen Marzeń (Concert Full of Dreams) - a free event that featured Polish pop artists David Kwiatkowski, Natalia Szroeder, and Grzegorz Hyże, as well as musical star Katarzyna Łaska (Frozen, High School Musical, Enchanted) and a full symphony orchestra. China – Shantou University was established in 1981 as a pilot college funded by three entities, two governmental and one private donor. The collaboration between the Chinese Ministry of Education, Guangdong Province and the private Li Ka Shing Foundation, is the first of its kind in China; a public university fully funded over the past two decades by the more than 400-million US dollars in donations from Li Ka Shing, who also happens to be the richest man in Asia. This year marks the retirement of Mr. Shing at the age of 89, who leaves behind his day-to-day duties at the school and a generous, educational legacy in Shantou University itself. One of the magnificent highlights of this school is its 52,000-square metre, state-of-the-art sports stadium complex, known as the Shantou University Sports Park. It includes an international competition-standard gymnasium complete with basketball courts, multi-purpose halls, swimming pools and VIP boxes. This year, the stadium played host to the university’s 2018 graduation commencement emboldened by the retirement farewell ceremony for Mr. Shing, complete with a substantial, and mobile, Clair Brothers C12 and C8 loudspeaker system.

UK – A lexandra Palace is an iconic building with a history absolutely linked to the narrative of London and Londoners. It was opened in 1873 as a grand Victorian public gesture: ‘the people's Palace’. Since then, the complex story of the building, affectionately known as ‘Ally Pally’, has been marked by fires, restoration, substantial war-time damage, charitable rescue, and many political sagas. In December, after 80 years of slumber and two years of careful restoration, Alexandra Palace Theatre has opened again following several years of careful restoration. As part of the process, a complete technical infrastructure had to be installed, including a substantial L-Acoustics Kara PA system that brings a fitting quality of sound to the beautifully restored space.

Nearly 100m of RoscoLED Tape was integrated inside a moving hexagonal structure overhead and was used to illuminate the 'MONKEYS' lettering on the top of the stage. The ability to control the light intensity and colour temperature via DMX was appealing to lighting designer Paul Normandale. He also found that its thicker copper base (compared to most other LED ribbon products) minimised potential for damage to the electronic circuits during handling and installation, truly allowing it to live up to the vigorous environments of rock & roll touring.

This growing area of business has seen 11th Hour take on new premises close to its Cardiff Bay HQ, as business development manager Jason Venables explains: “There’s no doubt that the notable growth in this area of the business is a reflection of the economic impact an ice rink can have during the festive season. People love to skate and the provision of the high quality, temporary facilities we provide draws significant footfall, benefiting local trade in the vicinity of the rinks.
