HRH The Duchess of Cornwall opens the Royal Academy of Dance’s new global headquarters, featuring an installation by Stage Electrics
UK – The new, state-of-the-art, Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) global headquarters in London received royal approval at its grand opening recently. HRH The Duchess of Cornwall opened the Academy’s new facility in Battersea, following an extensive project by Cragg Management and specialist contractor, Stage Electrics.
This purpose-built venue now houses enhanced education and training facilities for students and teachers, including seven purpose-built dance studios and a 193-seat performance space.
Stage Electrics secured this prestigious contract in 2020 after early engagement works with the client team and Charcoalblue. Work commenced on site in 2021. Stage Electrics worked alongside Charcoalblue in developing and delivering their original design intent specification.
The seven dance studios are fully equipped with user-friendly equipment to ensure both staff and students can use the spaces with ease. Stage Electrics designed and built control and playback racks, featuring Sennheiser wireless microphones, Allen and Heath mixers and Denon playback equipment. The studio’s audio sources, playback and mixing equipment are given voice by utilising RCF’s M Series loudspeakers driven by Crown amplifiers.
The main 193-seat performance space will feature an EM Acoustics speaker system with a Yamaha TF1 console and TIO Stage Racks. Illuminating the seating area of this space is achieved using Chauvet Professional Ovation H-55WW LED houselights controlled by an ETC Echo system. From the performance side, the space has a selection of ETC Coloursource, Lustr, ChromaQ Chroma Q Color Force Cyc Washes and Martin Mac Aura XBs. This is to be controlled by an ETC Element 2 Console.
Gerard Charles, artistic director at the Royal Academy of Dance said: “It was a pleasure to work with Stage Electrics on the installation of the sound and light systems in our new building. At what was a high-pressure moment for the organisation they bridged the gaps between our needs and the practicalities of working with building contractors and consultants to achieve a smooth opening of our new facility.”
Jon Matanlé, business development manager at Stage Electrics commented: “This has been a fantastic project to be involved with and the RAD now has a fantastic space suitable for their continued growth and expansion whilst inspiring the future. Like the rest of the industry, it has been a challenging time to source the required equipment to meet the deadlines, but our project manager Chris Brant and I worked with The team at the RAD to ensure the show could go on in time for their Royal Opening. They really do have a space to be proud of!”
