Showtec in Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens
UK – Illuminate, Winter Lights at Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens lifted visitors’ spirits during the short, gloomy days throughout the last weeks of 2022 and the first week of 2023. The outside gardens, with lots of subtropical vegetation, were beautifully set alight from 4:30pm until 8pm in an enchanted display of light and music.
Abbotsbury Subtropical gardens in Dorset have a long history, dating all the way back to 1765 when the first Countess of Ilchester built a castle on the site overlooking Lyme Bay. A short distance away, a wall was built for a sheltered garden to provide fresh vegetables and crops for the family in residence. This walled garden is now the heart of the Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens.
From 25 November to 8 January, a mesmerising outdoor winter light display within the gardens was established by OT Event Technicians. Ollie Titterington, head of lighting of the Dorset-based company, created the design in beautiful tints and colours, for visitors to take a breath-taking walk through the gardens after dark. Over 50 Showtec Helix S5000 with 40-degree beam shapers were used throughout Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens, resulting in a kaleidoscope of variegated colours.
The colourful lights transformed and illuminated the subtropical 18th century gardens and created a wonderful winters’ trail in the dark. This year’s extended route lead along rare plants and trees that were lit in spectacular colours that highlight the forms, shapes, and textures, and even a music and light show had been incorporated in the set-up, leaving the visitors in awe.
