David Staples introduces the amazing new Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai, India. This will also be subject of a session at ITEAC. The scale and design of the Centre are brought to life in the photos that accompany the article, but I’m also fascinated by the context in which the Centre operates – there’s a thriving cultural sector developing in India, which includes many forms of performance (including comedy) – and it is one that I knew very little about before reading David’s article. In contrast, another speaker at ITEAC is Marcus Lobbe, director of The Academy for Theatre and Digitality, Dortmund, Germany. I was so interested in what he’s talking about that I asked him to write an article for Sightline. The experimental work that they are doing is at the frontiers of where digital and theatre meet, and is being well-funded by Dortmund itself as well as the EU. Obviously the latter is no longer available to us, but I also can’t imagine any funder in the UK being in a position to support what is in effect a research and development facility – which will very possibly mean that developments in this crucial area are led by Europe in future. Our final report back from beyond the UK is from the Prague Quadrennial (PQ), which is presented by OISTAT (International Organisation of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians). Tim Foster, a previous chair of the Architecture Commission and a member of the PQ jury in 2019, writes in a personal capacity about this work on the frontiers of theatre design and architecture. Technical expertise is also featured at ITEAC in many of the sessions, and we have pieces from two very different companies. Sam Woodward from TAIT explains their role in the Royal Opera House’s recent flying system upgrade – which had to take place while the ROH was in operation. In contrast, Artisan Plastercraft have been involved in maintaining the fabric of Shakespeare’s Globe – a very niche but fascinating piece of work! Whilst also looking forward to ITEAC, we are also looking back at the ABTT’s last, very successful, event – the ABTT Theatre Show – where we highlight the winners of the ABTT Awards. Anette Ollereanshaw, in her latest report from the world of Training & Education, takes a more holistic view of the role of the ABTT, and the relationship between policy and practice through interviews with a range of those involved. Another ABTT-related article is the first in an occasional series introducing the roles and remits of some of the ABTT’s many committees. Michael Anderson explains what the crucial Safety Committee actually does – and how you can get involved. One of the challenges around audience safety is keeping audiences safe from terrorism – something which was brought sharply into focus by the Manchester Arena bombing. This has led to a demand for additional legislation (colloquially known as “Martyn’s Law”, due to the campaigning from the mother of one of the Manchester Arena’s victims – Martyn Flett). These proposals are due to come into law in 2025, and Richard Beale of Richard Beal Safety Solutions explains what this will mean for theatres. Everyone was very sad to hear about the death of Bryan ‘Kipper’ Kendal, a very early ABTT member as well as one of the founders of Theatre Projects. Richard Pilbrow and his nephew look back at the different sides of his life. I look forward to seeing some of you at ITEAC! Rebecca Morland Editor sightline@abtt.org.uk8 Sightline Autumn 2023 Now: As I sit here to commence writing this article I have just prepared the minutes for the July 2023 meeting, number 631; the committee has been around since the start of the ABTT in 1961, the same year I was born and I have been Chair to the committee for a little over 10 years. My predecessor David Adams was a founder of the ABTT and importantly the Safety committee. Historically: The Safety Committee was created to get industry people to contribute their knowledge and expertise towards ensuring that the Theatre Industry has relevant codes of practice, guidance notes and publications covering health and safety in places of entertainment, to structure industry best practice and limit or perhaps better to say ‘manage’ enforcement interference and subjective rule making. Aim: One of our primary aims is to identify simple guidance in an easy-to-follow format. The intention is to help licensees, technical managers and enforcers to understand the requirements and needs of places of entertainment, particularly where we are working in a charity status premises that is 80, 100 or even 200+ years old. We meet 11 times a year (not in December) generally on Zoom with some hybrid if we are granted an accessible venue. There are currently 122 listed members of the committee including multi-skilled techno-bods, lighting and sound nerds, rigging, lifting and testing peeps, directors of stuff, production and stage management stars, some fire and safety types and engineers of all sorts; pointers, thinkers, doers, dancers and singers. Currently: So, who the hell do we think we are? what gives us the right to dictate Codes of Practice, Guidance and Information to the world of Theatre and Entertainment? Well, the committee is made up of Theatre and industry professionals from across all fields of expertise, including representatives from BECTU, Theatres Trust, SOLT/UKT and PLASA, (NOT a bunch of pompous Safety Officers with clip-boards and peaked hats/ hi-vis) all of us work in various roles in the technical aspects of theatre and entertainment, we work together to share and compile our knowledge and experience in to relevant documents. We have a presence in 12 British Standards Introducing the Safety Committee Michael Anderson Committees, we attend the HSE’s Joint Advisory Committee for Entertainment (JACE) and the National Theatre Safety Committee, providing outreach to all areas of Theatre and entertainment. We provide an enquiry response service generally dealing with up to 100 varied questions each year to support Technicians, Stage Management and even TV and others who need to know! Random: We are (proudly) the Safety Committee, we are people, we have fun, because good health and safety should be fun, be interesting, about people, be engaging and involve some laughter, because laughter = engagement and, engagement = understanding and acceptance. •members are aged 24-84 •some of us do have a white beard (apologies) •most meetings have 8-16 people in attendance (zoom or hybrid) •meetings last between 45 and 120 minutes depending on the direction of our Any Other Business When we can meet in person we generally go for a beer after to discuss the best bits of the meeting in detail. Future: If you want to help with the creation of new guidelines, develop process and help with the amendment and update of existing codes of practice and content for Technical Standards for Places of Entertainment, please do get in contact as we would love to hear from you. Expectations: Become an online member and participate when you can via email or •Join us via Zoom and occasionally in person and •Be a part of the team that structures the processes and controls in your workplace! Current topics: •Pyrotechnics •Naked Flame •Immersive Theatre and Intimacy/Non- conventional Theatre •Mental Health & Wellbeing •GEEP’s PEEP’s and the evacuation of the less able And, what would YOU like to be involved with? /GLP.German.Light.Products /GermanLightProducts germanlightproducts.com The next generation of high performance professional LED washlights HIGH CRI natural color rendering CRI: 90 | TLCI: 90 UNIQUE DESIGN super quiet operation Baseless Design, only 13 kg ADVANCED ZOOM 3.5° beam to 60° wash super fast zoom mechanicsNext >
