Iain Mackintosh spoke very movingly about Richard at the Christmas Party, and he has very kindly allowed us to reproduce his words. Many thanks also to Theatre Projects for allowing us access to their writings and photos. Also at the Christmas Party, Margaret Shewring was awarded an ABTT Fellowship. This has afforded her the opportunity to reflect on her relationship with the ABTT. We asked her if she would put this in writing for Sightline and are very grateful that she has done so!. Margaret has, of course, been editor of the new edition of Theatre Buildings: a Design Guide, which is published by the ABTT and Routledge, and is a complete reworking of the previous edition published in 2010. To mark this event we have invited three experts to review it from their perspective: a theatre operator, a theatre consultant and a theatre architect. I’m very grateful to James Williams, Louis Jannsen and Tim Ronalds for their time and thoughts. They have really inspired me to buy the book, which is now available via the ABTT website. Two major building projects were covered in the last edition of Sightline, and we have returned to both of them in this edition. This is partly due to timing. With Bristol Beacon, Richard York visited in advance of its official opening and therefore wasn’t able to cover every aspect of this major project. As he explains, he has now returned to better understand the complex technical infrastructure that supports this concert hall. He has also attended several concerts there. We also asked Charcoalblue to outline technical infrastructure for AVIVA Studios in Manchester in advance of its formal opening. Now this innovative and flexible building is up and running, Tim Foster has visited to assess it as a performance venue. As I sometimes need to state, we often ask people to review buildings – and books – from their own perspective, which is based on their experience and expertise – and we support this diversity of views wholeheartedly. Other highlights of this edition include a welcome return of An Inspector Calls, the occasional series from Alan Lynagh, with many insights into the health and safety issues around theatre and performance buildings that he encounters in his role at Westminster Council. It also includes a shortened version of Mark Dakin’s recent speech at the IET, which essentially deals with the same issues from another perspective. As Mark says both technical expertise and artistic inspiration are needed to create exceptional live performance! Although it is only March, the ABTT Show is coming up soon, and we are therefore running a brief preview piece on this fixture in our calenders – with even more going on! We’ll obviously be providing much more information on this in Summer Sightline, but it is definitely a date to put in your diary! And finally, Sightline relies on the unsung input of many people, and one of these is now departing. This particular edition marks the last Young Associates column written by Matthew Freeman, who has been single-handedly writing about matters of particular interest to younger ABTT members for many years. Many thanks, Matt! Rebecca Morland Editor sightline@abtt.org.uk 8 Sightline Spring 2024 At the ABTT’s Christmas event in December 2023, when Anne Minors began taking about the person about to be awarded a Fellowship of the ABTT, I was absolutely stunned as I realised that she was talking about me. Those of you who know me well will realise that I am never short of words – but this left me at a total loss for words to thank the ABTT Council and all those people I have come to regard as my ‘ABTT friends’ over many years of conferences, seminars, theatre visits, course discussions and publications. As I write this I am still at a loss for words although I now know that what I want to say goes back to the start of my academic career and has led to so many opportunities to learn so much from all of you. To be trusted to A ‘thank you’ letter to the ABTT collaborate with you to trace the development of extraordinary performance venues from the 1950s to the twenty-first century – without losing sight of the importance of historical, social, political and economic circumstances and imperatives – has been a great honour. In 1978 I joined the School of Theatre Studies at the University of Warwick just three years after it was founded. There were still relatively few departments of drama and very few of theatre studies in universities across the country. Plays had, of course, long been integral to university courses in languages and literatures but with little attention to their performance possibilities and technical requirements. Warwick Arts Centre, at the heart of the relatively new campus, had Margaret Shewring Margaret Shewring’s presentation at the ABTT Christmas Party 2023. Photo © ABTTopened in 1974 with a theatre and studio and soon established itself as a popular venue on the national touring circuit as well as a facility for student productions. Meanwhile the first iteration of The Other Place, a studio theatre in a corrugated iron shed across the road from the RST’s gardens opened in 1973 with its first director, Buzz Goodbody. Plans were also in an early phase for a third auditorium for the RSC in Stratford-upon-Avon, the Swan Theatre. I was soon involved in teaching, researching and documenting developments in theatres and performance spaces at a time when the proliferation of new theatre spaces, new playwriting and experimental companies was to be integral to new ways of studying theatre and performance from a cross-disciplinary and increasingly international perspective. The formation of the ABTT in 1961 was an important factor in changing perceptions not just of theatre and performance but of publications – with a focus on architecture, theatre consultancy, building and set design, technical skills and industry standards that all played such critical roles in the creative industries. To put this in context, Roderick Ham’s pioneering theatre planning publications for the ABTT came out in 1972 and 1986 while, in America, George Izenour’s studies of Theater Design and Theater Technology appeared in 1977, both then revised in 1996. I was hugely fortunate to work with Ronnie Mulryne during the 1980s and 1990s on three books for which we (as Mulryne and Shewring Ltd) were in control of the whole design and publishing process alongside a highly skilled independent publisher, A. H. Jolly (Editorial) Ltd: This Golden Round on the first three seasons at the Swan (1989), Making Space for Theatre: British Architecture and Theatre since 1958 (1995) and The Cottesloe at the National (1999). Shakespeare’s Globe Rebuilt (1997) was published by Mulryne and Shewring in collaboration with Cambridge University Press. All made use of archival materials, detailed architectural drawings and plans, and interviews with creative, technical and production teams and venue managers. The first two books were accompanied by exhibitions: at the Mead Gallery in Warwick’s Arts Centre to celebrate the construction of the Swan and its first three years of productions; and in collaboration with the British Council to launch the touring exhibition devised, researched and edited by Iain Mackintosh, that accompanied Making Space for Theatre and opened at the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space. I did not fully appreciate at the time just how generous and open our collaborators and contributors were: from Michael Rearden, architect of the Swan, to Iain Mackintosh for Making Space for Theatre, Andrew Gurr and Michael Holden at the Globe and Jason Barnes, again with Iain Mackintosh, to document and celebrate the Cottesloe, The Mysteries and ten further, seminal productions in what we described as ‘Living Spaces’. Their support has remained a constant throughout my teaching and research at Warwick in both the Centre for the Study of the Renaissance and Theatre and Performance Studies, itself now part of the School of Creative Arts, Performance and Visual Cultures. When Michael Holden raised the possibility of a part-time postgraduate Diploma and MA in Theatre Consultancy at Warwick, I realised that so many of the ideas that had underpinned much of my work would be of use as we devised a course for theatre consultants (and, later, strategic planners and venue managers) with the opportunity to move on to doctoral research for those who wanted to do so. I was the course director for the Theatre Consultancy programme from 2008 to 2018, with a cross-faculty team from Theatre and Performance Studies, Warwick Manufacturing Group with its International Digital Laboratory, the Law School and, of course, colleagues from Warwick Arts Centre. The ABTT offered some financial support for members of the course to be part of conferences to discuss the importance of the sustainability of theatre into the future. This led to my last undergraduate teaching venture at Warwick, developing a module on Theatre and the Creative Industries at a time when issues of sustainability in response to the climate emergency, inclusivity and diversity of access, placemaking and wellbeing had become crucially important. Not surprisingly, when the opportunity came to edit a new edition of Judith Strong (ed.), Theatre Buildings: A Design Guide (2010), I was delighted to be part of another collaborative venture with the ABTT and its industry supporters, working with an editorial board chaired by Tim Foster, with Robin Townley and David Hamer as our drawings editor alongside a team of section editors, ‘key theme’ contributors and photographic researchers. It is a privilege to be part of the wider ABTT ‘family’. To be made a Fellow of the ABTT means a great deal to me. Thank you all so much.Next >
