He has also taken the pictures that illustrate the article about Theatre Clwyd and has appeared in these pages numerous times before. In the centre pages we are trying something new, two pages of photographs with only the simplest explanation. For some these will be familiar, they are their place of work, or similar to their place of work. But for others they will be an insight, views of hidden workspaces that tell their own story, beautiful and practical and for others maybe they are just abstract images, part structuralist art, part architectural reference, whatever your response to them I hope you enjoy them and we may do some more. Annette Ollerearnshaw reports from the rarefied world of Hair Vendors, Merchants and Vendors, sourcing hair ethically, importing it, hackling it, sorting it, grading it, bundling it before a wig maker gets to choose it. (I am still not sure what hackling is) There are even mixologists who blend hair. This is a very specialist industry with possibly unique individuals whose clients are as international as the sources of their hair. I particularly love this article as it gives us an insight into yet another micro industry that is essential to us but relies on a handful of dedicated experts. Dedicated experts segways to the birth of the Strand Lightboard, here celebrating its 50th anniversary. David Bertenshaw takes us through the complex birth of Richard Pilbrow and Richard Brett’s vision for a better memory desk for the new NT, than anything available at the time. The route to the development and delivery of the Lightboard includes original sketches by Richard Pilbrow, addresses the politics of opening the NT, the dire state of the British economy in the mid 70s and competition between the two biggest manufacturers at the time, all successfully navigated to produce a lighting desk that was, at the time, ‘Groundbreaking.” Theatr Clywd has re-opend after a long and substantial refurbishment, one of the jewels of Welsh theatre, the newly improved venue is so much more that it was. We visit the venue and celebrate a brilliant response by the architects and consultants to their brief. The building is now a wonder, when before it was really quite utilitarian, but more that that it is now a focus, a fulcrum for the local community. Unusually we hear from a playwright; Peter Cox spoke very eloquently at a conference back in 2023 about making theatre during the climate crisis and had agreed to share his speech. I won’t try and summarise it, but the subjects of what we work on are inextricably entwined with the crisis. The next ITEAC will be in 2030 and we are looking for your engagement. The conference has a fabulous history and has provoked lots of conversations, learning, changes of practice alongside sharing of successes and failures internationally. Here we are launching the next conversation that will make ITEAC 2030 and we really want as many voices involved as possible. Michiel Schrama has written a really useful article about TTR which told me things that I never knew. Following on from the last issue’s article about Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy we have a review of Immersive Theatre. Clearly an area that is growing. This is the Theatre Show Edition, Annette Ollerearnshaw talks us through some of the show’s history and explains how important it is to attend if you can, as she says: “Be part of the conversation.” The show keeps evolving, the ABTT stand this year is different, the carpet has changed, the show is larger, the design of the whole space has developed and we have expanded further out of the West Hall into the Great Hall. We have a baby and children’s room, the talks and training offering is varied and very useful for CPD. This alongside the annual chance to meet up with friends and colleagues, meet manufacturers and suppliers makes the show an essential date in the calendar. It would be lovely to or meet up with you at the show if you can make it and make sure that you are looking your best for the photo before the awards ceremony.8 Sightline Summer 2026 Opera collective, Collectif 17h25, present their new modular designs – MOD200 Modular design strategies can be used to promote reuse within theatre: the core approach is to imagine the design as a collection of smaller units or modules which can be combined to produce a desired structure of design. This means sets can be built with the majority of the material being reused items from stock and then dressed to achieve the final look specific to the production. Modular structures also potentially allow touring productions to move fewer structural set pieces, if the venues they are visiting have compatible structures themselves. The Theatre Green Book toolkit on modular design lays out more of the benefits and technical considerations of modular design, and some of the different modular design options available to theatres. One recent addition to this list is the MOD 200 design from Collectif 17h25… At the end of 2019, the Théâtre du Châtelet, the Opéra National de Paris, the Opéra National de Lyon, the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in France and the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels founded the Collectif 17h25 (referring to the time at which they agreed to meet), to explore how they could collectively make their production processes, and co-producing, more environmentally mindful. The main aim of the Collectif was to research and experiment with the creation of standard structures (modular design) for production sets. By doing so, the involved theatres would be able to tour co-productions (usually large- scale operas) between themselves whilst reducing the amount of core set structures which would have to be transported around between the venues. The Collectif agreed to share the designs publicly, so that any interested institutions across Europe could make use of them, as the designs developed. Over the past few years, the Collectif has developed a standardised design of a structural module based on a 200mm grid, named ‘MOD 200’. This standardised module makes it possible to build a reference grid based on multiples of 200mm. This has the advantage that all key structural elements of the set are compatible and interchangeable. The Collectif have shared their research process and designs, so that anyone interested can make use of them. From networking events, awards ceremonies, members’ meetings or trade shows they are vital for connection, helping all of us stay abreast of industry developments, reconnect with colleagues and dream up future collaborations. For parents and carers, particularly those without ontap family support, attending industry events can quickly become a logistical nightmare. It often requires finding childcare or eldercare outside usual working hours which can be expensive. Yet not attending can mean missed opportunities, loss of professional networks and feeling isolated from your peers and colleagues. I used to have to take my child everywhere when they were little. I never knew what we would face and whether I’d be met with rolling eyes or welcomed into the space. This always added another layer of stress, and sometimes we didn’t make it out of the door at all. Not knowing what to expect is a key factor. Are kids allowed? Will there be changing facilities? Is the venue accessible for buggies? Is breastfeeding or pumping possible or do I need to hide in a toilet? Will I be the only one – and will I be judged? At PiPA, our Partners have been working hard to trial different ways of addressing the lack of affordable, flexible childcare, from designated breastfeeding rooms (with fridges to store milk), to links with local childcare providers in Welcome Packs, crèches at auditions and interviews, and Children in the Workplace policies for when childcare falls through. These might look like baby steps but our partners are making huge strides. It sends a clear message that parents and carers are valued, the load we carry is real, and we are respected and proactively supported. We are delighted that this year PiPA is supporting ABTT to trial its first ever baby and children’s room at the annual ABTT Theatre Show. Having a designated space to rest with your little one, change nappies, breastfeed or simply connect with other parents sends a clear message: parents are welcome here. Much like sensory or prayer rooms, the success of these spaces is not measured solely by how often they are used, but by their presence. Knowing they are there reduces anxiety, widens access and enables attendance when flexibility is required.
